About Mrs. Snow Pea

You’ve heard of speed dating, right? Well, now there is speed planning. I will be in NYC for 2 short days and I have to fit every appointment in this small window.

Of all the errands I have this weekend, one of the things I’m look forward to most is going to my first dress fitting. The dress maker is done making Dress #1 in muslin. Muslin is a finely woven cotten fabric that’s very inexpensive. New clothing designs start with a draping of muslin on a mannequin. Once everything is right, the actual pattern is cut out on paper. Using the paper pattern, the actual fabric is then cut. This allows for any modifications so the dress is truly custom fitted to the bride’s body. Also, mistakes can be avoided on the actual fabric being used such as lace, which can be costly.

My bridesmaid Linda will be accompanying me to take oodles of pictures to share with you. I am excited to finally feel what it is going to be like to be a bride!

You know — a speed-planning session is an excellent idea. How about it WeddingBee? Brides and vendors fill a room, and you get 2 minutes (or whatever the standard time period is) to talk, then at the whistle, rotate to the next one. I’ve heard about this for speed dating, finding a nanny, etc.

I am getting married in NYC and planned to get my gown custom made b/c I have such a difficult frame to fit (big boobs, short waist). Can you recommend who you’re using? A friend told me about some dressmakers in Chinatown but I’m hesitant b/c I don’t know anything about them.

Hey Tess,

The gown is a gift from my friend Karla who is designing and overseeing the making of my gown. She is a fulltime designer and doens’t typically do wedding gowns. I have approached her about it and although she doens’t have time now, in the future she wants to do wedding gowns for plus size or petit women that are hard to find. Unfortunately just not anytime soon.

I do have another contact that I can put you in touch with; however keep in mind that a custom made dress is by no means a more cost effective way to go. They start at $1000 and atleast another $25/hour on top of that for every erron, fitting, shopping, related to the dress. Not to mention the fabric ie. silk $300 for a simple dress no train, $200-$400/yard for lace. A dress takes about 4 yards of fabric without the train.

erron = *errands

I don’t know why I keep spelling it incorrectly.
