Easy, Breezy DIY

So, working down the list — I’ve “figured out the guestbook stuff” and here are my solutions.

For the ceremony: the standard, run-of-the-mill guestbook. I purchased the Celine Countryman silk-covered guestbook from Jenni Bick Bookbinding in platinum blue. Clean, simple, functional, well-made, and not overly expensive = an easy choice for Miss Plumeria. I may dress it up a little bit to look like some of the other monogrammed choices on the site, but we’ll see… I know I’m running out of time.

My pick, top:

Some prettier ones, also available at Jenni Bick:

For the reception, it was a little harder to decide what to do. With a guest list topping 400, we needed something fast (goodbye, trendy Polaroid guestbook), as well as non-fussy (farewell, equally trendy large glass container and individual “wish cards”). So I stuck with what had been my original idea, anyway: a large photo mat for people to sign, with one of our bridal portraits inside. Since we have so many people, instead of one huge mat and frame, we chose three fairly large ones that happened to be on sale at Target for $12.99 each…

Then, I bought some rub-on transfers and definition stickers at Michael’s…

… And put them onto the mats, just to add a little something, while still leaving plenty of room for signatures. When adding stickers, I placed them intuitively: aligning edges here and there, and making sure the placement on each mat was similar, but different. I bought some gold gel pens for signing, ordered a few prints of our portraits to go inside them, and they’ll be all set and done in plenty of time. ;-)

We do a lot of mat-signing at work (basically every retirement involves 2-5 signed mats), so let me share what the people at the expensive frame shop taught me: have the mat in the frame for signing, or people will write all the way out to the verrrrrry edge and the frame will cut it off. You can put the glass somewhere safe, or put it in the frame behind the photo.

i like the detail on the mats. do most people have two separate guest books? or is it because you’re having more people to the reception than wedding [which i just assumed with the 400 guest count]?

Miss Plumeria says:

No, I think the count between the wedding/reception will be about the same, as everyone was invited to both. I think the mats are kind of just a more fun thing that, truthfully, we’ll display and cherish more than the guestbook. Also, since there will be some people only attending one event or the other, there’s an opportunity for both sets to sign in, without giving guests who attend both the chance to accidentally sign one item twice.

Sarah.. good idea! I’m also considering just masking off the first .25″ of the edges with tape, to indicate “no signing” there!

I was curious.. how does the inside of the jenni guest book look like? is it lined or are the pages blank?

I absolutely love that you included quotes and sayings on the mats! I think that’s a great way to inspire your friends and family to leave geat messages as well! Sometimes they need a little help coming up with something to say - so giving them a few ideas never hurts! Perfect!
