I'm currently living in Los Angeles, literally a street over from where I grew up with Mr. Kiwi, my honey of three years. We have a jumbo mini-dachshund (seriously, he's huuuuge), and we're planning an autumn themed wedding on a shoestring, paid for by ourselves. The wedding date is my late grandma's birthday, I needed her there somehow, and that seemed like the best way for us. I can't believe I'm a Bee! I couldn't be more proud!

Momma Needs A New Dress!

May 4th, 2007 @ 11:32 am by Mrs. Kiwi

The ladies in my family are built weird, short and waistless. We have short torsos and carry most of our weight there, to add to the many reasons we loathe to shop for dresses and things like that. So, I guess you’d say we’re plus-sized, or just “not small”. happy015

Now that my gown has been found, and my FMIL has her gown set, my mom is lagging. I know she’s been waiting until the “right time” to shop, but honey, it’s now. Who knows if she’ll need alterations or something? So, I’ve got to point her in the right direction. But where to find petite large sizes?

I went to Chadwicks, the place where I’ve heard a ton of MOB dresses have been found, and loved this dress: Beaded jacket dress $159.00, in gold.

My mom is 62, and she doesn’t feel comfortable wearing something that’s too revealing or “sexy” (thank you for that, mom), so this suit is right up her alley. Unfortunately, I don’t see a petite size in there - she’s below five feet tall.

Okay, on to something else… What is this? A nice little number courtesy of Chadwicks? I like. Lace Skirt Set , on sale for $109.99

Whoops, it looks awfully similar to Mr. Kiwi’s mom’s dress. Would that be weird for them to dress the same?

Next, I went to the Petite Shop at Nordstrom . Hm.. Apparently they don’t have an “Old Petite Shop”. Everything there I would totally wear, and although I’m glad I found it for MYSELF, I need something for Ma! Damn you, Nordy, trying to lure me away from my mission at hand with cute dresses!

So, this is just my first foray into mum of the bride dresses. Anyone else have an idea of a dress for a short, larger-sized lady? Or just something for petites?

I don’t think it would look weird for the moms to be dressed similarly; quite contrary, I think it would look cute!

The petite section at Talbots seems to be good for a lot of people. But, talbots selection is a lot better online than I have ever found in the stores. We’ve ordered a bunch of stuff in varying sizes off the internet to try on at home, and then taken what doesn’t work back to the stores to save on return shipping! good luck!

I second Talbots. My mom, who is 5′1″, will be looking there, I’m sure. They have very age-appropriate dresses, suits, etc. Ann Taylor also has great petite sizes and options, but may be a bit on the young side, although their new Celebrations line is great. Dillards might also have some good things.

On a somewhat similar note, my bridesmaids will all be wearing floor-length black strapless dresses, but both moms are petite and want to wear short dresses (knee-length). That’s okay, right?? They just don’t feel comfortable or pretty in long dresses.

Nice choices–I heart Chadwicks! If you opt for that or other online stores check out

http://www.retailmenot.com to use a coupon for the purchase.

How petite is petite in terms of height? It might be possible to choose a dress and then have the length fixed.

Try Dillards.com. There is a mother of the brides section under their Dresses & Special Occasions category.

Or a plain long sheath-type dress (easier to find), then dress it up with a lace bolero, spanish shawl, or something similar? Or a two-piece outfit–long skirt, jacket-style beaded top?

Good luck!

I actually wouldn’t have the mom’s dress THAT similarly. Coordination is good, but you don’t want people to start saying things like “Wow, those are similiar outfits, and that one looks so much better!”

i would check out loehmann’s in west LA on la cienega & san vincente (near the bev center). they sometimes have great outfits for moms (and for daughters too… =P). i would check out their “back room” or their suit section.
