Beehive

May 7th, 2007 @ 4:20 pm by Beehive

In today’s hive:

  1. e has some questions about the etiquette of invitation wording. Should she write “John Doe + Guest”? This seems odd to her, so she’s considering writing “John Doe + Guest” on a vellum topsheet wrapped with thread….advice?
  2. Meg is desperately looking for bridesmaid gifts. She’s considering faux multi-strand pearl bracelets, but can’t find anything cute. Anyone have any suggestions?
  3. Kim is looking for a Chinese wedding dance group to perform at her Orange County wedding. She’s found some online resources, but would like to hear personal recommendations.
  4. Miss Hydrangea is looking for d’orsay style pumps in brown for her bridesmaids, under $100. Suggestions? She’d also love suggestions on where to look for ties for all of her groomsmen.
  5. Miss Hydrangea is curious: has anyone mail-ordered linens for their wedding? Her rental place doesn’t carry the ones she likes, and she wants to know whether ordering them is worth the trouble.
  6. Bkb is on the hunt for a rhinestone bridal comb. Her hair will be half-up/half-down, and she’d like to wear something towards the back of her head. She’d love to find something similar to Mrs. Ladybug’s Regina B comb, reasonably priced. Also, she’s in NYC and local suggestions would be great.
  7. Jen would like to know what the etiquette is regarding paying for/accommodating the needs of out-of-town guests. Her fiance’s extended family is coming from Asia, and expects the bride and groom to foot the travel bill…but this would add another $20k to the bottom line. Are she and her fiance being rude by refusing this major expense?
  8. toki wants to know what sort of containers people typically use for “money boxes”, and where to find them.

Meg,
Try http://www.creme-de-luxe.com Her name is Jenn. She’s an old blogger friend of mine. The pearls are real but affordable. She can custom make anything. For group orders such as bridesmaids, she’ll give you a discounted price.

e - I wouldn’t worry about it seeming odd to write “and guest” on the inner invitation envelope. Seems like a lot of extra work to use the extra vellum just for etiquette purposes (but if you like it aesthetically, go for it).

Unless the couple is engaged, living together or married, the phrase “and guest” covers it and gives you a “pass” from having to be 100% certain about Guest’s status (e.g., Is Chris still dating Sam?) and name spelling.

Of course, if you don’t want to tighten the guest list and you use Guest’s actual name, that prevents the “primary” invited person from substituting someone else if Guest (meaning the guest you assumed would come — the significant other) isn’t able to attend. The “primary” invited person isn’t free to fill in with someone else without asking you first (and not everyone would ask for that, to bring some other friend, relative, neighbor, etc.).

Oops — last paragraph should read, “if you DO want to tighten the guest list” Sorry

I’m looking for a rhinestone bridal comb. My hair will be half-up/half-down and I want to wear the comb towards the back of my head. I love Mrs. Ladybug’s Regina B comb and am looking for something similar at a reasonable price. I’m in NYC so any local suggestions would be great.

bkb - my suggestion would be to buy a rhinestone pin off of ebay and then hotglue it to a comb. You could probably spend $15 on this and get a fabulous comb.

Bkb — Since you are in NYC, check out Michael’s consignment! I got so lucky in there w/ bridal accessories and got the most beautiful hair comb (great quality, no idea on the brand).

I have a question. What containers do people use for “money box” and where can I find one? Thanks!

Miss Hydrangea - I used BBJ Linen, which has regional centers across the country. They sent me samples, shipped directly to my reception site, and called the event coordinator there to be sure everything arrived safely. The linens were exactly what I wanted and the prices were extremely reasonable. I highly recommend them.

Toki - I’m from Maine, so we used an LL Bean Tote. You can use anything at all that will hold cards. Even a simple basket would be fine.

Toki–that’s a great opportunity to personalize your event. Use whatever you want!

toki - I’m using an antique birdcage, but it can be whatever you’d like. A basket, a pretty tray, a DIY box… anything you desire.

jen- uh…have someone spread the word that no…the bride and groom is not paying for anyone’s travel expense but their own. my cousin got married in hawaii…and some family members (had the nerve to) ask if they were paying for their travel expense…hell no! just tell one close relative to make sure they tell the other relatives…and don’t worry about it.

thanks Iris. I meant that I don’t have an inner envelope and it seems tacky to write “and guest” on the OUTER envelope. Sorry if I wan’t clear. I just can’t do an inner envelope. It won’t fit the design….or the envelope! But it is tacky to write it on the outer envelope, right? Am I being obsessive?

e - Technically you should get the “guests” name…but I ask how one expects my sorority single friends to figure out who their date will be for a wedding two months from now. So, if you have an outer envelope, write “Mr. John Doe” and on the inner “John and Guest.” If not, I like your vellum idea, acting as an inner envelope!

Meg - I don’t know your budget, but my favorite gifts are the personalized (with a pic) make-up bags by bagettes.com (25 dollars) or silver bead earrings (basically balls/studs) for 80 dollars. They used to be 70! :-(

Miss Hydrangea - our guys bought *perfect* nautica ties at Macy*s. I think it entirely depends on what you’re looking for.

Miss Hydrangea - I only know some that have mail-rented, which is what I’d recommend.

Jen - This reminds me of Father of the Bride. I think if you are *demanding* they come to the wedding and stay in “X” hotel, etc., then you should foot the bill, otherwise they travel at their leisure and should pay their own way. But, I’m a young, poor teacher. ;-)

toki-
i never even realized that the money box existed until planning for this wedding.

if you want they sell them at target. they are $35 and it’s simple in white with a couple of bows. i would have bought it from there because i don’t really care, but my mom is insisting on making it herself.

Meg-
I am giving my bms a necklace and a glass jewelry box engraved w/their names. The necklaces I got from http://www.pickledbeads.net. They custom made my necklaces to match their dress and worked within my budget (simple but nice). Either that or you can go to http://www.vintagebridaljewelry.com. I got my bridal jewelry (pearl glamour) there. She worked with my budget and design and they look beautiful.

Bkb-
http://www.headpieceheaven.com has a lot of nice combs. I got the porcelain rose wave halo there and it is beautiful and affordable. They’re located in NJ.

Jen, I remember another beehive question like this a while back. Cultural customs & etiquette may dictate that you’re supposed to subsidize the travel costs, but if you can’t afford to, I think your family would understand.

I’m looking for a nice chinese restaurant in Orange County (close to Dana Point as possible) to host my rehearsal dinner. Can someone please provide recommendations? Thank you!

Question! I need the hive to weigh in on the Great Chair Cover Debate. Our reception hall chairs are deep red with gray metal trim, which doesn’t match our colors (pink/orange). I realize that our decor will be much improved by chair covers, but we’ll have to put them on ourselves the day before. It’s not so much of a $ issue as a hassle/is it worth it issue…thoughts?

Aliya-
My friend got chair covers because her reception chairs didn’t match her theme either. After attending her wedding, I personally hate chair covers! Guests cannot tuck their feet under the seat at all which is very uncomfortable in my opinion. I ended up hiking my cover up and making it look all bunched up & ugly at my friend’s wedding because it frustrated me so much! If money is not an issue, I say swap out the chairs themselves. Rent elegant chivari chairs from a local rental company and have them set them up for you. You’ll have enough to worry about the day before anyhow!

Ariston flowers in Manhattan is awesome, I’ve never worked with them on a wedding but when I’m in the neighborhood I have to go in. I think it’s “reasonable” but not cheap. http://www.aristonflorist.com
