Bridal Shower Winnings!

May 7th, 2007 @ 1:00 pm by Mrs. Kiwi

Yesterday I went to a bridal shower for a bride I don’t know very well (I asked you previously what gift to give her), and as I sat with people I’d never met before, I felt a little awkward. Sure, going around the room introducing ourselves and how we met the bride helped, but I must say I forgot most of the names, only managing to keep their relation to the bride straight.

It was a very fun shower, about two minutes from Knott’s Berry Farm (my FMIL and I seriously considered ditching the party and going on some rides!), with plenty of places to shop nearby. There was a bevy of games, from the “How well do you know the bride and groom?” to a game that was a cleaning product version of Mad Libs - you must fill in the blanks with a cleaning product. The bride’s grandmother thought of this game, and man, all of us who were under 60 had a hard time of it - most of these products weren’t even made anymore!

Amazingly, I won the game and a super cool spa gift set. Of course, when Mr. Kiwi came home and heard I won a cleaning product game, he laughed in my face. Hey, just because I don’t clean, it doesn’t mean I don’t know there are things that are USED for it! Also amazingly, I tied with the bride’s best friend for how well we know the couple. How the heck did that happen? Sitting amongst friends and family of the bride, how did I know more than they did?

This made me wonder about my shower (or showers). What kind of games will we play? I don’t really have close friends who are women, and my guy friends won’t likely show up. shy I’m thankful enough to just have wonderful people throwing me a shower, not even counting the one my FMIL is throwing as well! I know it’s not my job to go searching for my shower games, but I wanted to know if anyone had any good ideas for games that are a little less “How much do you know about the couple” and a little bit more fun without the history questions?

This past Friday I went to a Baby shower and one of the games was called “Baby Jeopardy.” It was played just like the regular jeopardy except we didn’t have to answer in the form of a question, and all questions related to “baby.”

I think this would be a great bridal shower game using questions related to anything wedding or maybe to the couple.

Any game can be turned into a crossword puzzle easily and for free.

I went to a shower once where they played a “famous couples in history” type matching game. It was timed and you filled in as many answers as you could and whoever got the most right won. It was pretty hard but a lot of fun and some of the wrong answers were pretty funny!

I had my second shower this weekend and one of the games the girls came up with was a form of Bingo. Each guest was given a blank gameboard and they were supposed to write what gifts they thought I would get (so each person was guaranteed two spots: free and their own gift). As I opened presents, they crossed off any they got right and tried to get a Bingo.

And this wasn’t a game, but my girls gave a prize to the person who drove the furthest to get there, which turned out to be my future MIL. She drove a little over four hours!

The last one I went to did a “Let’s Make a Deal” style game, where they read out a list of things you might find in your purse, and whoever had the most, won. I ended up winning because I was carrying a fairly hefty pocketknife at the time. Emery board? Check. Corkscrew? Check.

It wasn’t my job to go searching for shower games either, but I found a vintage 1950s board-game style edition of “Bridal Bingo” on eBay, and I believe my mom bought it for my shower. And, I know what you mean, Miss Kiwi–I don’t have loads of female friends in the local area either. My shower’s going to be pretty small–my fiance and I both have small families, too–but I think we’re going to have more fun that way.

There’s a game my friends and I love called Quelf. Totally not wedding related at all, but I cannot possibly convey in mere words how much fun this game is. I’d have to, like, dance about it or something. And if you happen to be having mimosas or some similar spirit, oh my god. Such a blast.

I had to laugh when I read your post — I went to a co-worker’s bachleorette party last year and her MOH (her sister) and her bridesmaids did a “How well do you know the bride” game and I won — despite only having known her for about two years ;o)

There were a few games we played -

Each person gets three clothespins and three words they’re not allowed to say (ex. “marry” “wedding” “FI’s name”). If you say the name, you lose a clothespin. The person with the most wins!

Make a bridal gown out of toliet paper.

Wrap a gift in varying sizes of boxes and then have them unwrap with kitchen mitts. Each person gets about 15 seconds and they keep passing it. The person who gets to the gift keeps it.

Everyone guesses how many questions the bride will get right about her groom and then the bride tries to answer the questions! (you can use bubble gum if she gets them wrong)

My matron of honor threw me a shower last weekend and she passed around several pictures of me at different stages in life. The guests were supposed to write captions for each of the photos. Some were sweet, some were actually a little mean, and a lot were really funny. I read the captions in between opening gifts. It was pretty fun!
