How Much?!

May 7th, 2007 @ 2:04 pm by Mrs. Emerald

This topic has been discussed ad nauseam, but of course this is a wedding blog, and it’s my turn to cover it! laughin011 A big checkmark off our to-do list! Wedding rings have been ordered! Last Friday during our lunch hour, Mr. E and I took a stroll to Jeweler’s Row, which is a small district in downtown Chicago with numerous wholesale jewelers. Mr. E has an old friend from grade school whose family owns a small jewelry store in this area, and his friend now actually works there full time. So it was an easy decision for us to go to her. We gave her our budget and told her what we wanted, and she said she no problem!

For me, I picked a shared prong 0.4 to .45 carat “almost” eternity band in 18K white gold. The reason I say “almost” is because she suggested leaving a quarter of the band plain without diamonds, so that if necessary, re-sizing in the future would be much easier. (Sounds like solid advice to me!) So imagine this ring below minus a few diamonds.

For Mr. E, we picked an 18K white gold hammered ring with a milgrain edging, which we’ve had our eye on for a while. Something like this…

What was our budget? $1100 for both rings. Mr. E thought this was a lot, whereas I thought this sounded slightly low for TWO rings, considering that I wanted *bling*!! But with Mr. E’s friend’s help, and the option to pay in cash (cash is king!), we were able to make this work!

When we walked out of the store, Mr. E asked me, “Well, what do people normally spend on their wedding bands?” My response was, “Errr… good question, I don’t have a clue. Sounds like a question for Weddingbee!” Miss Bluebell did some polls on wedding band costs here, and I checked a few generic budget guidelines, which stated that your wedding rings should account for 3 to 4% of your entire budget. Ours would be around 2%.

Soooo…

What percentage of your overall budget are both bands?

Our budget is $4k and we spent $600 on both bands… a whole 15%.

Including the engagement ring, $104. That’d be $12 to unsolder and clean my mother’s wedding set, and $92 for his band. Does that count as cheating?

We’re spending a bit more because we both want platinum, which is ridiculously expensive these days. I’d go for white gold myself, but my engagement ring is platinum, and I don’t want to get into the re-dipping thing in a few years. Mr Pencils, after hearing that matte finishes often don’t last if you use your hands a lot, chose a platinum band with a brushed titanium inlay. It’s quite a masculine ring. He really likes it, and he wasn’t all that thrilled about wearing a ring in the first place. Mine is a very plain platinum band. BTW, for those who saw my beehive question recently–I did go to the Bowery jewelers, and talked to some guys in the Diamond district, and they can get the squared band for me, but it would be almost twice as much as the rounded edge band on e-weddingbands.com. I tried on the rounded-edge style again, and decided that although I like the squared-edge by itself more, I like the way the rounded-edge fits snugly with my engagement ring. So rounded it is.

Ms. Emerald,
Any recommendations on your jeweler? I am in Chicago and need to get my rings pretty soon.

i really dont think there should be a budget on both bands if the both of you can afford it. I know that the entire wedding planning process is EXTREMELY expensive, but sometimes when you think about it, this band will be on your fingers FOREVER, and sometimes even passed on from generation to generation. I wouldnt mind spending the extra money and getting a band we both like.

Skimped on some things, but splurged on our rings — the only things that will last, beyond the dress, even beyond the photos, as something to pass down. I inherited a great-grandmother’s set (engagement and wedding bands) and they mean so much! (And they fit perfectly, but her e-ring is now very delicate (well-loved and worn!) and FI wanted me to have my own.) Their selections are very telling about the people they were, so it’s a great piece of meaningful family history.

We didn’t consider e-ring, or the wedding bands as part of our budget, since they are something that we will wear for the rest of our lives, while the wedding is just one day. The total cost of the 3 rings is more than double what we are spending on the wedding (think very low thousands for our wedding budget).

my ring is just like yours! i ended up being a two ring bride! :-( cause my engagment ring isn’t as big as i would have liked cause we coudln’t justify paying so much for a ring, so i thought maybe i can make up the bling in a wedding band. and the first wedding band i got wasn’t as bling as i wanted it to be but i bought it on impulse. so now i have two. hehe i might give one to alice, just for fun. :-)

I know ppl always say “you wear your wedding ring forever,” but is that really true? A lot of older couples I know “upgraded” to an anniversary band 10 yrs down the line. That’s why I don’t feel bad about spending just 2-3% of our budget on rings, to me it’s something upgradeable, just like honeymoons and engagement rings.

Our rings together cost $420, and our wedding will end up costing $50,000. So we are well under 1%. We just got plain white gold bands. I wanted something really simple for now, with the intention of upgrading one day. As for men’s rings, I don’t think anyone should spend a lot of money. Most men that I know are pretty rough with their hands. My dad is on wedding ring #3 after losing the first two. The stones in the e-rings/bands may last forever, but I don’t think that holds true for the metal.

i was wondering how to interpret these stat results… b/c the amount spent on rings is a percentage of the wedding budget..meaning someone who spends $500 on rings can still be in the 1% bracket along with another who spends $2000…

either way, miss e, i love your wedding band! nice and SPARKLY! it’s always nice to know someone in the business~ ;)

We went blingy for my wedding band rather than upgrade in a few years…I want to have this jewelry forever. No upgrades please!

its_v, I have a GREAT jeweler to recommend in Chicago (Jeweler’s Row) if you’re interested. Go to Koorosh at the Wedding Bands Company (http://www.weddingbandscompany.com/). He did my coworker’s wedding set and now my band, and I couldn’t be happier. His prices are great - he gave us 1/3 carat total weight diamonds for 30% less than the other place quoted us for 1/4 carat total weight diamonds (same quality)!

Ugh, I’m allergic to nickel. White gold is mixed with nickel, because white gold by itself would be too soft to use in a ring. I’m not sure the extent of my allergy, as the only reactions I have are from cheap jewelry that’s most likely all nickel. But, I don’t want to spend money on a high karat white gold only to find out down the line that the nickel content was still too high. I couldn’t even get a college ring because they only came in white gold and wouldn’t work with me on using other metals. My e-ring is in platinum, and I absolutely feel awful because I know FH paid way more than I ever hoped he would. Sadly, it looks as though I have to go platinum for the band, too.

I’ll probably get a plain band, and then add to it when we have the means - I once heard a story about a couple who added to her ring every Christmas (big diamonds in prosperous years, small gemstones in poorer years) and she had a one-of-a-kind piece that told their story :)

We haven’t purchased our rings yet, but they are going to be pricey. I was going to go for a less expensive ring, but my fiance loves a wedding band that is entirely set with asscher cut stones to match my engagement ring, which looks like it starts around $3K set in white gold, and we would upgrade to platinum for both our rings. I know it’s a lot of money, but my engagement ring and wedding band are probably the only things that I will own and keep using for the rest of my life!

I’m with Tessa on this one. Our bands were about $720 and our overall budget is $4,500. So, we were at about 16% of our budget.

Miss Emerald - Where did you get that picture of your fiance’s wedding band? I love it!

FI and I went to Diamonds on Wabash (Jeweler’s Row, also) and he paid close to $1500 for 2 almost eternity diamond bands set in 18k wg for me… his was from Whitehall Jewellers, 18k wg+platinum combo and it was $900… so our wedding rings were a big chunk… and not counted within our wedding budget, that was our treats for ourselves.

T - actually I just searched Google Images for “hammered wedding band” and came up with that. Its quite a popular style now, so if you go to a jewelers and asked for a “hammered men’s wedding band,” many will carry something similar!

We didn’t consider our wedding bands as part of the overall budget, as we will be wearing them the rest of our lives. And I would never “upgrade” my wedding band. How could I improve on the ring that my husband used to marry me? No diamond could make it more precious. I’m going to be very sentimental about that ring. I’m not saying that I wouldn’t like an anniversary band someday, but it would never be a replacement wedding ring. (Unless I, heaven forfend, somehow lose my ring.)

We didn’t count them as part of the budget, either–mine was $550; his was $200. But like others have said, we’ll be wearing them for the rest of our lives, not just for one day.

Also, my parents are paying for the wedding, and they’re of course not paying for our rings. So they didn’t even come from the same ‘pool’ of money as, say, the cake or DJ :-)

Pencils - that’s how I am about my engagement ring. My theory is that while we are engaged he can upgrade that ring if he wants (since we’re paying for our wedding it’s not likely to happen) and then once we get married I’m not touching the e-ring but will take upgrades on the wedding ring - I guess the ring I will upgrade depends on the stage we are in if that makes sense…

Then again, I like the idea of keeping everything exactly how it was. Maybe I’ll see if we can buy a new “starter” ring for use with my idea above. Then, we can work with my allergy and find something like tungsten or titanium that doesn’t have to match my e-ring but can be cheaper than platinum! :)

I don’t know why they are so expensive. My FI is getting tungsten so I can have my band in platinum. That would be at least $1000. Darn, wedding makes people file for bankruptcy.
