Makeup For Me

May 8th, 2007 @ 1:22 pm by Mrs. Bluebell

This weekend, shortly before Mr. Bluebell’s card got put on a temporary hold due to the “suspicious activity”of…buying lots of wedding stuff, I decided to finally suck it up and get my makeup done professionally so I could buy tons of crap and try to learn how to apply it myself. I am not usually a makeup person, so I made my friendly MAC counter Bloomingdale’s employee explain everything to me. I’m betting he got a wee bit annoyed. Although he was probably salivating as I confessed that I don’t own any good brushes or…anything else, yet. So now, way way way much more money than I was hoping to spend later (um, than Mr. Bluebell was hoping to spend winky06), I own a ton of MAC products!

I didn’t buy quite all of them because I figured I can buy my own frickin’ face lotion and I honestly have never suffered for lack of eyebrow wax in the past…but here’s my basic wedding look!

(hehe sorry Mr. Bluebell decided to get a bit artistic near the end since apparently “take a bunch of pictures of my makeup for weddingbee!!” isn’t interesting enough on its own)

The reason I am doing my own makeup is because I’m getting married in the smallest town on earth (okay maybe not quite, but I guarantee there are no professional makeup artists in a hundred mile radius.) Small town may equal $15 hair trial with $30 bridal hair (oh yes, you heard that right) but it also means I have to try gunking this stuff on myself. So be prepared for me to randomly get all made up for assorted workdays as I try to practice before the wedding!!! My guy gave me a diagram with where to put things (roughly) and the order in which to apply but I am still very very NOT confident.

Does anyone have any good application tips for me? Is anyone else applying their own makeup…NOT by choice?

Ooooh, love the makeup. And tell Mr. B. that he’s got very good camera skills!!

I think I love the eye color the most. And the lips. Frig. I just love it, all around.

I have no tips, though, since I am inept.

miss bluebell, the make up looks great! I am in a similar situation, marrying in the smallest town imaginable and without make up skills. I did visit the Ye Olde Beauty Shoppe to possibly set up a make up trial but when I saw the “beautitian” in all her blue eyeliner- blue mascara-blue eyeshadow to the brow line-glory I had major second thoughts. And a good thing too, beacause on my way out of the “shoppe” she gave a shout out, “you really would be pretty with some makeup, honey.” Youuch! Much like you, my new plan is to spend way too much time and money at my local beauty counter and hopefully end up looking “pretty.”

Beautiful! You look like Uma Thurman.

Depending on the look you are going for, you could try a little stronger eye, maybe some dark brown liner very close the the upper lashes, and blend it upwards just a little.

My only tip is not to do the metallic body powder thing. It can look like sweat in photos, and it looks especially weird if it’s on the body (sparkly/sweaty) but not the face (powdery matte). Sometimes this is seen in celebrity photos — looks like a doll with the wrong head or something. Same goes with bronzing powder — the face should blend in with the neck, etc.

Thanks everyone!!! :-D

Mrs BOP - yes, I did get it! I felt like a sucker since I’m sure I could get a perfectly serviceable brush elsewhere for less than frickin’ 40 bucks, but it felt soooooooooo nice and I just wanted it. :-) But that was the single most “wow I feel cheated out of my money” item that I bought!

Kattail - Yeah, it made me a little nervous that my guy was both male and not wearing makeup, but he just asked me to describe my dress (and not even about what kind of makeup I wanted) and then pulled a bunch of stuff and it was EXACTLY what I wanted! So just go somewhere (else) where you agree with their taste (and they’re not bitchy!) and hopefully you’ll get your perfect look!! Good luck!

Thanks for the tips Iris!

And I totally don’t get the Uma Thurman thing, although I’ve heard it a million times. Just don’t see it!

Anyway, there actually is some dark brown liner on in the pics! Hehe but I guess it must not be doing that well if you can’t tell. As for the body powder - good to know. The bronzing powder was actually one of the things I didn’t get because I honestly could not tell the difference before and after. So I’m just going to stay away from everything with bronze &/or metallic in the name I think. Ooh except eyeshadow, gotta have that. ;-)

I’m a lot like you - before college, I knew next to nothing about makeup. Two years in, I still know very little, but because of choir (read stage makeup) I’ve learned a little!

My best advice is to get eye color sets. I have a great one made by Wet N’ Wild (cheap! at wal-mart) that has three colors and explains how to apply them. Another tip a friend told me is to find a cheap lipstick (she uses N.Y.C., again, cheap! at wal-mart) as blush. It costs less than the blush sticks and lasts just as long. My and one of my best friends favorite makeup brush is from the dollar store. It’s cheap, replaceable, and it’s compact. I guess it’s fairly obvious I’m a student - I’m all about the deals.

If you have a friend who is good at makeup you could always ask them for help. That’s what I plan on doing.

your makeup looks fabulous! it could even be a little more dramatic if you feel daring enough. =o)

i went the diy makeup route as well, not by choice. (i got married in jamaica..) it was frustrating at first because i was new to makeup application and was horrible at it. but after i mastered it, i really think diy is the way to go! now i have the makeup and skills to glam myself up for the rest of my life.

Haha Miss Kiwi, I’ve had comments get half eaten too, it’s okay. :-)

The lip color is actually two things! A fairly dark matte brown covered in a medium pink translucent gloss! And it’s one of my favorite parts too! Hehe.

And thanks for all your tips Joyful!

Looks great! Like you, I have almost no make up experience. Did you have a good experience at the MAC counter though? Why did you choose them over other makeup counters? Did you spend more $ in products than you would if you just had makeup done by someone on your wedding day? I kinda think it’d be a one time thing for me since I don’t generally like makeup…

Thanks Mrs Ant! I am sooo not daring enough to go bolder, haha. I already felt SO made up, I couldn’t believe people weren’t staring at me walking down the street. :-) But thanks about the bangs too! In my hair trial pics you can get the gist of it…side part but not quite the same look.

Jann - I definitely spent more on products than I would have just hiring a person to do it. Theoretically I can reuse all this crap a lot, but I dunno how much I’ll actually use of it since I’m so not makeup-y in general.

I definitely had a great experience at the MAC counter; my guy was super nice and intuitively KNEW exactly what I wanted without me really explaining much. I can’t guarantee that would happen to everyone but I felt like he instantly had a grasp on my coloring and based on what I told him about my dress on the whole style of the wedding etc, and just picked the perfect look based on very little. As I said though… I would totally pay someone to do it if there were people around where I’m getting married; I just trust that they know a lot more about how to do it so that it looks nicely and goes together etc than I do.

As an aside, my guy VASTLY underestimated how much my makeup would cost. I honestly believe that he was trying his best and just didn’t add it up right, but it was still quite a sting at the register. :-)

your makeup looks gorgeous. Have you thought about asking where your getting your hair done if anyone there has makeup experience?

You look lovely! When you get a chance, do you think you could let us know the exact color names of the lipstick, lipgloss and eyeshadow? I like how your lips look very natural… I’m lovin the colors, although our skin colors aren’t similar at all, haha.

Thanks guys! :-)

valeqt - my hair is being done by a woman who fixed up a room in her house to cut hair, but also does ALL the girls’ hair when the (sole) highschool has prom. So not a lot of options there…

Miss Emerald - I promise to…try to remember to check the color names! For the eyeshadow that’s actually a combination of FOUR colors (that might not be crazy, but I don’t “do” makeup, so I don’t even know, hehe) but yeah, I’ll try to check!

i think you look lovely but need a bit more color on your cheeks! some more blush/bronzer would do. (i see you have some on but right at the apples of your cheeks would look good!)
