Teach/Coach @ private schools in LA Engagement Date: March 31, 2006 Wedding Date: November 3, 2007 Venue: Radisson Hotel About Me: I'm a bookkeeper who failed high school algebra. I'm currently living in Los Angeles, literally a street over from where I grew up with Mr. Kiwi, my honey of three years. We have a jumbo mini-dachshund (seriously, he's huuuuge), and we're planning an autumn themed wedding on a shoestring, paid for by ourselves. The wedding date is my late grandma's birthday, I needed her there somehow, and that seemed like the best way for us. I can't believe I'm a Bee! I couldn't be more proud!

As I was signing my future name, I realized it’s freakin’ impossible to sign this last name I’m going to have. Let’s just say it starts with an “F” and ends with an “X”. How the hell am I supposed to sign that? Isn’t the whole point of cursive to try not to lift your pen?

You’d think that after almost four years of dating (and signing my assumed future name), I’d get the hang of it by now. Yeah, no. For some reason, my “F” looks ridiculous and I always forget the letter before the “X”. Why is this so hard for me? Just when I’ve started excelling at signing my maiden name, I choose to change it. I mean, really. An “F” AND an “X”? Torture!

How about you guys? Am I the only one practicing my new name constantly?

Haha, my middle name starts with an F and after my whole LIFE of practicing, I still can’t get it to look pretty! I’m good with the rest of my signature, but that little F just sucks. :-)

And I went through a phase of practicing my future last name and it went surprisingly well! It’s quite nice looking and five whole letters shorter than my current last name so I am looking forward to THAT! I’ve started signing my current last name as firstletter-bumpysquiggle-longflat line recently, since I have to approve a lot of crap at work. So making that shorter will be awesome!

Good point Miss Bluebell. I have to sign alot of drawings someday so my shorter last name is better than my new last name (if I take it). I’ll have to use that line!

I’m so shallow… [how shallow are you?!] …I’m so shallow that this is one of the reasons I’m not changing my name. Not that his is awkward or even long (it’s 5 letters to my 8), but I’ve been signing this name–and answering to it–for a long, long time.

my signature is illegible anyway, so even if i do change my last name, my signature won’t change =P

I’m not going to lie…. I’ve been practicing… I need to! I’m going from 3 letters to 9!

Your posts are so honest!

Yes, I used to practice my new signature in slow meetings, etc. In my case, taking my husband’s last name helped me get rid of my ugly middle name/initial and replace it with my maiden name, so it’s a win-win for me. Just keep practicing. Experiment with writing the letters another way. Oh, and an extra-flowy pen is more fun.

To anyone changing their name — Be forewarned that the passport takes the longest. There is currently a processing delay; could take 10 weeks unless you pay to expedite (also delayed and still takes 3-4 weeks).

Yes and no on practicing. I wrote it out the other day and it was so weird! But I am so happy to be moving up in the alphabet!

My signature is an L and then a (deliberate) scribble and then a C an a (deliberate) scribble. After I’m married, I’ll just switch to an L-scribble M-scribble. =)

LOL, I forget letters in my maiden name all the time (like going from the “n” to the “i”)! However, my new name will be great - 4 letters and all rounded. I remember my FSIL practicing her name before her wedding, she went from the easy 4 letter Chinese name to an 8 letter Germanic name that began with an “F” She tried to convince her groom to either (a) let her keep her name (b) have him take her name instead.

Haha. I have to re-learn about signing “z”s. That’ll be fun. I guess the only way to learn is to practice…

I don’t so much have a problem “signing” my future last name per say… but it has become a laughing joke to people when they hear it. My last name now is “Choi”…and when I get married.. it will be “Cho”. I’ve heard everything from “All you have to do is erase the i!” to “Is this a joke?”

So signing my new future last name won’t be a problem since it;s a bubbly signature and you can’t really tell the letters anyways… but people HAVE been laughing..and I;m the only one that doesn’t think it’s so funny anymore after hearing people laugh at it a bazillion times.

anyone else have this problem?

I have a friend who DIDN’T hyphenate her last name for this reason because her hyphenated new last name would be Lam-Yan and she said it just seems silly.

I just write a big scribble for my signature. It probably look the same after I take FH’s name.

I haven’t practiced, but I think I will now. Mr. Lovebug shares a name with a famous person, and my name combined with his sounds sort of like another famous person. I know that’s really confusing and cryptic, but my point is…wait, what is my point? Oh yeah — I better come up with a cool signature in case anyone asks for autographs.

One suggestion for the “F” last names- (My maiden name starts with an F)- I always had a terrible time with that F making it look nice, and trust me, I practiced a LOT. :-) I now write that F in lower case cursive, and I’m generally happier with that. The cursive F is so ugly!! Just a thought Miss Kiwi!!

I’ve definitely practiced my future name. It’s great to keep me busy during really boring meetings. I just hope no one ever flips through my work notebook!
