Why Hire A Videographer?

May 8th, 2007 @ 12:57 pm by Mrs. Tomato

I always regarded hiring a wedding videographer as a rather frivolous idea-a vendor only people with extra money to spare would consider hiring. After all, a photographer would be capturing all the special moments in pictures and that was enough for me. Besides, if I really wanted someone to videotape my wedding, I could always ask my Dad.

But then one of my friends hired Alex Tomek from Lumitone Productions for her wedding, and when I saw her video clip a few weeks later, I literally started tearing up (and I don’t cry THAT easily). I didn’t realize that a professionally done video could evoke so many emotions. In the same way that an experienced photographer can capture images that your cousin’s candid snapshots probably can’t, so a professional videographer can film your wedding as a timeless, unforgettable memory.

A wedding is meant to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and I realized that sometimes pictures are not enough to remember it by. I want to be able to remember how the sun shone during the ceremony, and how we recited our wedding vows. I want to remember how my Dad looked as he walked me down the aisle, and how the reception went. Everyone tells me the wedding day goes by in a blur, and a video would allow me to relive anything that I missed in the excitement of it all. Plus it’d be great to show our kids in the future (if they were interested).

But then of course, there was the wedding budget.

When I first presented the idea of a videographer to Mr. Tomato, he wasn’t crazy about it. We didn’t have the money for it, we didn’t need it, etc. Finally I convinced him that we should at least check out Lumitone’s studio in Concord. Alex was not only polite and friendly, but totally willing to answer all our questions. He showed us a few sample clips from his past wedding videos, all were quite different in style but completely fitted each individual couple. One couple had an “MTV-style” theme while another looked like a classic old movie. You can view some of the clips here.

In the end, even Mr.Tomato had to admit Alex was talented and the packages were very reasonable. We chose the cheapest package at $1499-and when we mentioned we were referred to by our friend, he gave us a generous 35% discount. I know his prices have gone up since then, but he’s still worth checking out! And if you mention you were referred by Jen (wedding date 7/1/07), he may offer you a discount too. No promises–but it never hurts to try!

I LOVE watching wedding videos to see everyone dressed up and looking their best especially with the awesome love songs as background music. But everyone I know says they never even watched their wedding video. We had a formal engagement overseas in Vietnam on 1/26/2007 and also hired a videographer to capture our special moment and I’ve watched it a million times already. To me it’s just as important as the photography!
