No, I Was Just…Looking

May 9th, 2007 @ 10:32 am by Mrs. Kiwi

Weddingbee, I think I have a problem. I am a registry stalker. And because our registry is so new, and we’re still six months away from the wedding…I’m not even stalking MY registry. No, friends. I am stalking my cousin’s registry. And that of a girl who has the same name as I do. Why? Because I’m at work and I have nothing to do.

It actually helps me with the cousin’s registry, I can see what she’s getting and then help finish some of the items off. The same-name girl helped me find some cool towels I didn’t know existed at Bed Bath and Beyond. So…I’m not really “stalking” so much as “learning”. pleased02

From all my time on various wedding boards, I see registry stalking is quite common. It’s almost like compulsively checking the weather before a vacation! You have to know, right? And if a gift is bought off your registry, you’re like, “Ooooh, I wonder who got us the Krups Coffee Maker!” It’s fun! People do it at parties! Okay, I’m getting a bit side-tracked, but hear me out.

There are a ton of things I’m adding to my registry as we go along, things that I see on other registries and think, “Man, I totally forgot we need a cooling rack!” It really helps me remember things we actually need, like a dish rack and a butter dish. So, while I may be a tad psycho, it’s useful!

Do you do any registry stalking?

Damn you. Reading this I was thinking “I’m not like that!” but then without even thinking I logged on to Crate & Barrel to check mine. I swear it wasn’t even conscious. AAAHHH. So I guess I’m guilty too! Although not of checking random other peoples’ registries as much… :-) And we set ours up a year and a half before our wedding so my main “reason” for constant supervision is that a ton of stock has been changed so I have to check that something we requested isn’t no longer available, and then if it is we have to search for a replacement item that we like….

Ummm…. yes. I am a registry stalker. And I will be even more of one once I receive my shower invite and know that they’re out!

OK I *just* closed my Bed Bath and Beyond tab and clicked over here :-D

I stalk daily, sometimes twice daily :-(

I have been stalking my SIL registry. But in my defense I did send out the invitations to her shower last week and wanted to see if people got them.

I definitely stalked my registry — and my husband would get annoyed b/c he said i was ruining the surprise! My mom would stalk too … she’d call me and say, “Did you see someone bought you the such-and-such?”

As for other people’s registries, I definitely keep a watchful eye out to … you know, “help” them along! :)

I am the WORST at this. I stalk my own registry at least once a day (and the wedding is still 4 mos away) and I stalk other people’s registries. I want to see if I might have missed something they registered for and after the wedding, I want to see what people will actually buy. I’m changing some of my stuff based on what my FBIL got at his wedding recently.

I totally stalk our registries. Our wedding is in 10 days. Before my MOH gave us our gift the other night, she said, “You probably already know what this is…” Yep, busted!

as of a couple of weeks ago i was totally guilty of stalking my registry. then i decided to take a break from it. my shower is this saturday and i didn’t want to remotely ruin any of the surprises. so i haven’t looked in two weeks. while i think about it a bit and want to know if things have been purchased (our wedding is a month from tomorrow!) i also have been enjoying getting packages in the mail and having no idea what is in them. i totally changes the present opening experience. i’m sure i will go back to my stalking ways once the shower is over though. i mean, what if it is running low or something?

I personally stalked all of my friends registries and stalked those of couples a long time married. I did it to find out what people bought them, how much people spent, compared it to my own, making sure I didn’t leave anything off and in general, just nibbing around ….I LOVED my registry and since getting married, I MISS my registry. :( No one is going into C&B or BBB anymore for ME….they just go for others and now I am lost and have no reason to stalk anyone’s registry, including my own….but yes, I did it and I condone it and I hope you all enjoy it!! It doesn’t last forever!

Guilty.

Try not to let yourself look at the “thank you manager” function because then you know who bought it, too, and there is no surprise left whatsoever. Or, if you must look, just don’t tell FI so at least one of you can be surprised.

Ok, another confession. I’ve even searched for names of various people I know on wedding and baby registries (common big stores) to find out if that long-lost friend ever DID get married to that guy, or if that couple ever DID have a baby… And, yes, you can find them! Hm, maybe I should send a gift as contrition…?

Oh, iris, you just gave me a horrible idea. Now I’m going to have to go do that. :) (thanks!)

There was an ill-advised wedding in our circle of friends about a year and a half ago. The bride had an “only the best, pricetags be damned” attitude toward the registries, such that the cheapest thing on them (I there were five) was a $45 silver-plated bottle opener. That sort of price level, combined with the fact that they’d clearly not kept track of what they’d registered for at store X when they registered at store Y, made registry stalking a big, big source of entertainment for us all. Altogether, they registered for four pairs of salt and pepper shakers at three different stores, the least expensive being $88. Also at least two panini presses at two different stores, the exact same wine chiller at two different stores, etc. The biggest fun was counting the wine glasses–a dozen here, a dozen there…ultimately they had registered for a total of 38 champagne flutes at in four designs at four different stores; the total for all glassware was close to 200 pieces.

This was fall 2005, and there are still very, very few fulfilled items on their registries. I go back every few months to remind myself what not to do.

GUILTY! I am terrible about this — it wasn’t so bad before, but the invite to my shower went out last Monday so now I’m checking both registries 2x/day. It’s like a drug, though…I can’t help it!

I am definitely a registry stalker… for the registry of others (friends, family members, acquaintances from various time in my life). My fiance stalks our registry all the time looking to see if anyone bought us things (and our wedding is still a year away, but we do have the first engagement party coming up…), but I prefer to continually check out the registries of others I know. I think mostly I check it out to see how much has been purchased off their registry, and what it is that guests are not purchasing so I have an idea of what things I will not be receiving (so far, it seems like bathroom decor items are always the last to go off the registry — the soap dish, tissue box, toothpaste holder, etc.).

Nope and I personally think it’s a bad habit! I hate that a friend of mine might know what her “special” gift will be or at least knows that it has been purchased, before her shower or wedding. Just my humble opinion.

So I’ve been GOOD. I had to look at one point because my mom asked me to check soemthing, and I hated knowing what I was getting for my shower a week before. :-(

At a certain point (after the showers) I will be looking to see if the registries need replenishing. I think. If I have time and energy! :-)

No, I like surprises. I knew where Santa’s gifts were stashed every year too as a kid– but never peeked. My mother, on the other hand is another story! I took off 6 place settings of my china the other day upon request of my FMIL (she told us she got us 6 as my shower gift at another store and to take them off–guess she’s not big on surprises like me!). About a day later my mother emailed me to say that she noticed I only have 6 place settings on my registry and didn’t I want 12? Hello, stalker!?

I actually posted about this on my blog a few weeks ago. I’m definately a registry stalker…I stalk mine and my cousins. I feel so guilty sometimes, but I love recieving presents. I’m just thankful I don’t know who purchased what, so I’m still *somewhat* surprised when it comes in the mail!

I definitely stalk my own registries! I am the exact same way; when I see something new has been purchased, I’m always wondering who got it. That’s the best surprise of all!

Everytime I get info about another girlfriend’s registy, I always go check it out…at least once. And I do the same thing there, too…see things I didn’t know I wanted/needed and go add it to my own!
