Mother (in-law)’s Day Present

May 10th, 2007 @ 1:05 pm by Mrs. Plum

This year for mother’s day, I decided to be a little “cheaper” than usual and make my mother-in-law a gift rather than purchase one (bc of the wedding and all silly).

The other day when I was at her house, I was making 2 dahlia pens for my bridal shower - apparently, she’s never seen a “flower pen” before - so she was all excited and told me “what a cool idea” it was.

Soooo, that’s how I came up with the idea to make her a whole vase full of flower pens for her to enjoy. (I used peonies and tulips - which is appropriate in the Vietnamese culture because the translation of ‘peony’ literally means ‘mother’ - a little useless fyi of the day!)

Here is what I made:

Mother (in-law)'s Day Present : wedding gifts mother Z879437 z879437

Materials:
-10 regular bic stick pens in varying colors
-1 wooden vase/container (this particular one is ei8hteen karat brand)
-plastic liner to protect the container from the ink (or water if you were going to use this vase to hold real flowers with water)
-hot glue
-floral tape

How To:
1. Pop off the ends of the stick pens by using scissors or any object that will fit in between the pen and the cap - wiggle it until it comes off or cut it off if you can’t wiggle it off
2. pull the flower heads off the silk flowers
3. pour hot glue into the hollow end of the pen
4. poke the flower head onto the end of the pen
5. hold til glue dries
6. take floral tape and wrap around the “stem” of the pen several times until the entire pen (excluding the tip you write with) is covered. You should pull it tight enough where it is semi-tacky and adheres to the pen’s surface. You can glue it down if desired.
7. You can glue the “leaves” onto the pen as well if you want, but it’s not necessary.
8. Put in vase - and you’re done!

Those are so cute! My FMIL is a teacher, so these would be so perfect! I’m trying to come up with a variation to use for my own mom since she works in a corporate office. I have more time for hers though since she’s coming to visit next week and I’ll save on shipping costs and just give it to her then.

I was just thinking that I’m in a DIY crafty mood. Off to Walmart I go!

A side benefit is that people are less likely to “accidentally” steal your pen.

Aww those are so adorable! What a great idea! I’d say they’re even better than fresh flowers (because they won’t die and will look beautiful sitting on your desk all the time!)
