Open Question: Wedding Designer?

May 10th, 2007 @ 3:27 pm by Open Question

Dear Weddingbee,

We’re having a huge church wedding and reception, but would still love for everything to look beautiful! Unfortunately neither of us have an eye for design so we were considering hiring an interior designer to create a cohesive vision for us. We know that floral designers often handle the decor, but a fellow church member is doing our flowers for us and while they’re great with flowers, they don’t have experience with the details that pull an event together.

How are you putting together an overall vision for your wedding, especially if don’t have an eye for design? Are you designing your wedding yourself or enlisting the help of an interior designer, florist, wedding planner, friend, family member?

Thanks! :-)

When you get right down to it, virtually every image I’m working from is either from MS Weddings or something someone posted here. (My colors are from a MS paint chip from the distant past.) So in a sense, the MS Weddings stylists are my designers. Only the best, baby.

enlist the help of a wedding coordinator. a few i interviewed had the option of designing your vent for you and presenting 2 or more schemes or options for you to choose from. i’m not sure where you are located, but a lot of the higher-end florists in major metro areas will do full “event production” in terms of decor. i know that won’t quite work for you as you’ve already got a florist, so i’d say find a great event or wedding coordinator.

most interior designers will not have the resources and vendors you need. plus they are used to designing more permanent spaces, not temporary ones for one night. they may give you a great vision, but a great event coordinator will provide much better expertise.

My suggestion would be to tap resources at your church. I had to do most of my wedding planning from 1000+ miles away from my church. We found a wedding day-of coordinator there who made the day run flawlessly AND event planner who completely decorated the reception and ceremony section. We gave her the kind of theme we were wanting, and she went with it. She could’ve completely created something for us if she could.

My suggestion would be to sniff around for friends and family. She made my reception more beautiful (and WAY more economical) than I ever could.

Unless you have a particularly bad eye or you or your guests have exceptionally high standards for style, DIY inspiration (online resources abound) combined with bouncing ideas off friends & family works.

The more you look around in the internet, the more ideas you get for your own wedding. I personally got a lot of ideas from this website, the knot, and other websites blogged here on weddingbee. It all depends how much time you have. If you’re busy with a lot of other things, then it might be easier to hire someone. Good luck!

Interior designers can make weddings and events spectacular! Designers have an eye for color, scale and proportion. They are better able to “see” the whole picture. Hiring a designer for all or part of your wedding may be the difference between “nice” and “wow”!

I hired a “logistics” coordinator and also an “aesthetics” coordinator. She was a local gift shop owner and previous caterer/florist. She helped a lot with placement of the various elements, some lighting, decorating the cake table, etc. She also made the buffet look much prettier than it would have otherwise. Keep your ear out and think outside the box to find someone- it’s worth it!
