Materials Used:

  • Lace
  • Ivory Vellum Paper
  • Satin Ribbon
  • Double Sided Scotch Tape
  • Votive Candle Holder
  • Scissors

This is kind of a quick and simple way to make lacy votives without having to use a sewing machine.

  1. Measure the length around a tea votive holder and cut vellum paper and lace a few inches longer than the length of the votive.
  2. Apply several pieces of double sided paper on vellum paper.
  3. Adhere lace to the vellum paper and make sure that the edges of the lace are secure to the paper.
  4. If your lace has a scalloped edge, trim the edges throughout the full length.
  5. Roll the lacy vellum paper around votive holder. You can either roll the paper with the lace facing inside or outside candle holder.
  6. Overlap and adhere ends with several pieces of double sided tape.
  7. Wrap satin ribbon around votive and add bowtie bow to each using tape.

These votives are very cute and simple. With the help of my fiance’s mom, I made about 40 of them for our reception tables. Our venue prohibits the use of candlelight so we’ll use LED flameless votives instead. The LED lights are really expensive but I found a great deal on cudge.net.

For our rehearsal dinner, we will use paper votives to decorate the gift tables. The directions are the same as above without having to apply lace. The paper I used is from Snow & Graham Letterpress.

Beautiful. Thanks for sharing those LED tealights — never seen them before.

For the votives, it’s so much easier to clean up the tealights in metal cups than the ones without. Plus they extinguish themselves and the glass holder won’t pop from the heat of the wick burning down all the way (I have done this, oops). But the ugly metal cups need decorating, so a little lace/ribbon around the glass is a great idea.

Very romantic and pretty. I’ve decorated votive holders and vases using papers before but never thought to use lace. Your lace is beautiful. I think it’d look better without the bow though. Kinda like gilding the lily? Great DIY post.

They look great! And they’re a perfect project for the LED tealights–but would they pose a mild fire hazard for real tea lights?

I think I would only put the lace/paper around glass candle holders that the little votive cups fit into… (is that what you meant, Miss Bell Pepper? my bad if I missed it)
