About Mrs. Blueberry

Videographer

May 11th, 2007 @ 1:16 pm by Mrs. Blueberry

The issue of hiring a videographer has been a matter of *much* contention during this wedding planning process. I really wanted to hire one, just someone cheap to capture the ceremony and most important parts of the reception. My parents, however, wouldn’t let me build that money into the budget. Mr. Blueberry wanted one as well, and so did his parents. So for months I hemmed and hawed about it, finally resigning myself to the fact that the only memories we’d have of our wedding would be from our awesome photogrpaher.

In March I put a listing up on Craigslist, just a shot in the dark–would anyone be willing to work as inexpensively as Mr. Blueberry and I could afford? It was one of the few aspects of the wedding that we’d have to pay for ourselves, and our college student budget does *not* go far at all. I got lots of responses–some a lot more wonderful than others. But one really stood out. We talked with the videographer on the phone and tentatively hired her for the day-of, then she mailed us a DVD which we received yesterday. We were *really* impressed with the quality and loved her personality and philosophy, so we hired her…for $475.

She actually teaches video classes at a KC university, and shoots weddings for fun on the side. Since it’s not her main source of income she only does a few a year–so she can devote more time and energy to each one. She’s coming to the rehearsal to set up shots, and then will be at the wedding for the ceremony and the whole reception. Afterwards, we’ll have one completely edited video, and if it’s 1/10th as good as her demo DVD we’ll be thrilled.

We have a videographer! I guess Mr. Blueberry really does love me–’cause this means we’ll be eating a lot of mac ‘n’ cheese for the next few months. :D

I think a lot of the time we forget small local companies, and we forget that things like Craigslist (or, in my case, google maps) can help put us in touch with them. But a bigger thing we forget is that the word “amateur” literally comes from “love;” they’re people who do it because they love it. I’d rather have a videographer who is genuinely looking forward to shooting the wedding than one–even one with years of experience and tons of references–who looks at it as just another check.

Based on her price, there’s no way our photographer can be doing this for a living, but her sample books were filled with the pictures I would want to take (if, y’know, I weren’t in them and all). From talking to her, it seems like she just plain enjoys going to weddings, and genuinely enjoys taking pictures of them. Good for her–and good for us.
