Wedding Ring (Part II)

May 11th, 2007 @ 3:38 pm by Mrs. Monkey

My attempt to get Mr. Monkey to wear a diamond men’s wedding band failed miserably (see old post)…so, we came up with a better idea.

Instead of buying a wedding band for Mr. Monkey…I’m going to try making one!

I’ve taken a few jewelry and beading classes here and there at the YMCA. And I’ve told myself that if I ever win the Lottery or win a crazy amount of money playing slots in Vegas one day…I plan to be a full-time “jewelry design class-taker”! (and, on the side, start a doggie day care where I can play with Juby, Gromit, and other cute dogs allll day)

Here are the details: I’ll be making a ring for Mr. Monkey at a jewelry/arts workshop in the city called “Make Workshop.” If you’re interested in taking jewelry design classes, knitting, or even learning letterpress…this place seems to offer it all. I haven’t taken any classes here yet, but I think it’s going to be really fun.

If all goes well, Mr. Monkey will be wearing this ring on September 8th…

LOTR ring

(Just kidding…it won’t exactly look like this)

If it doesn’t go so well (as in, the ring ends up looking like a lump of silver), I’m going to get him something else he’ll wear and enjoy until I can find a suitable replacement:

I got a case of ring pops for the kid boxes, and have 24 left. I also have three bridesmaids who will more than happily pose with ring pops for photo ops. Ring pop photo op!

For those in Toronto, or willing to make a trip to Toronto for a Saturday, I highly recommend Sarah Wan at http://www.thedevilsworkshop.ca

My fiance and I made ours there, and it was a great time. Sarah is really relaxed and very sweet, offers you tea and coffee, takes pictures while you work and gives you a CD of them to take home. All for a price comparable to buying rings at a jeweller.

It only takes a day for you to make your own rings. I think most people do plain bands, but you think you can also do gypsy set stones in this workshop too. For more complicated designs, she has other metal smithing classes that would be a few evenings.
