Beehive

May 14th, 2007 @ 4:16 pm by Beehive

In today’s hive:

  1. P got her engagement ring in LA from the jewelry district, and she’s wondering if she should get it insured. Do most people do this?
  2. Kar would like to know the proper etiquette regarding wedding gown bustles. She likes her gown much better when it’s done up in a french bustle, but wants to know: is this is a ceremony faux pas? Should she wear it down for the ceremony and wait for the reception to put it up?
  3. miss melodious is having a bouquet dilemma. She’d like to find non-white flowers to go with the brown and turquoise colors of her wedding. Suggestions, anyone?
  4. jft5 is looking for very basic, step-by-step instructions for making invitations and place cards.
  5. Newbie is about to have her first meeting with a reception vendor, and isn’t sure what to expect (or what’s expected of her). Any advice on what she should ask/look out for?
  6. bliss is considering using spray tanner; anyone have any tips? (And will it come off on her clothes when she sweats?)
  7. jessi is looking for inexpensive, personalized cocktail napkins. Can anyone recommend a website?

P, my fiance got my engagement ring insured. It makes me feel a little more at ease wearing it, so I would highly recommend it.

I got my ring insured - I had my insurance company add it on to my renter’s policy. My agent told me that once the ring is given, it’s your property and you are responsible for insuring.

Miss Melodious: would something like these be too ‘out there’ for you? They’re crazy, but I kind of love them.

P - Get it insured. It’s not expensive and you will have peace of mind. Mr. Snow Pea paid it in one shot and it actually lowered our car insurance for some reason (Liberty Mutual) which is what we also use for our house.

jft5 - a friend of mine, looking for similar help on shower invitations, went to a local papercraft store (rubber stamps, scrapbooking, etc) on a slow day, and the owners just sat down and actually did the invitations with her. If you don’t have that kind of time lying around right now–and who does–poke around aylee’s site for a bit, especially the links page:
http://www.gnyc.net/bio/b-diy.htm
There are a few knot bios featuring walkthroughs of DIY invitations, too.

As for place cards, any party goods store will have blanks, or you can cut cardstock and fold it, or you can use your favors as place cards (which is what we’re doing), or you can write people’s names on virtually anything and call it a place card. Go nuts. My current favorite is a peach with a leaf-shaped piece of paper pinned to it.

Jessi - try reavesengraving.com for the napkins…they have great prices and quality work for their invites so I would think it safe to say the same for the other odds and ends.

i’m having an indian wedding with bright colors for the reception: hot pink and turqoise. i’m thinking of having tall vases of cymbidium orchids submerged in water as centerpieces. would light pink orchids go with the other colors?

Kar - I’ve never heard any etiquette around bustles and ceremonies. As I have also never heard of a church requiring a train, I would say do what you prefer.

Advice for spary tans - do a practice run so you can work out all of the kinks - wash your feet and hands afterward, like when you get home (they’ll tell you not to, but I have found it makes them look a lot more natural) - and yes, it will come off on your clothes if you sweat, it will be on your sheets if you don’t shower before you sleep, but it washes out. Also, I have had it react oddly with my antiperspirant - it turns your armpits green, but wipes off.

miss melodious: antique white roses are technically not white, but you sound like you want color. A couple different ideas:
* Lillies are pretty and come in all sorts of colors. I would personally carry bright yellow, but I like big contrast, and bright yellow might be a bit much for normal folks.
* Tulips also come in almost every color you could want.
* Hydrangeas naturally come in blue.
* Get a bouquet of all greens and tie it with turquoise and brown ribbons.

Hope this helps.

I’m interested to know if anyone has compared “Spanx” with the much less expensive Target version, “Assets”. I understand both body slimmers are made by the same company, so I wondered if there was any benefit to spending more for the original.

P- I also agree insure the ring!!! I insured mine and feel so much better, when you add it to your renters insurance it is protected against theft, loss, and yes even going down the kitchen sink!!! For piece of mind it is well worth it, I don’t know of too many people who haven’t had a horror story in their lifetime about something happening to a ring.

bliss- personally i would skip the tanner, I have yet to find one that looks natural, but if you do try one, as ceenimarie said do a trial run, if it turns you orange it will come off within the week. I just recently had a really bad experience so a huge warning when you put it on do not rub it in around your fingers or toes because it will collect there more easily and I ended up being slightly orange on my skin, but around my toes and fingers was a muddy bright orange color because the stuff collected so badly there. I also agree washing hands and feet for some odd reason those spots turn darker and brighter if you don’t and then the tan will look really fake. Good luck, let us know if you find something that works well.

newbie- I just recently had my first experience with receptions and ceremony vendors, relax its not so bad, make sure to look nice and I suggest bringing a folder with information for each place you are looking at as well as paper to take notes, and take lots of notes. Get e-mail addresses and phone numbers for the ones you are interested in so you can contact them later with questions, because even if you ask a good list of questions more will always come up. you can search websites like the knot and pwg.com for a good list of what to ask or feel free to e-mail me Robyn.bridetobe at gmail.com if you would like my list of questions. I know they are decent because I got complimented for asking the right questions. A lot of it though is follow up based on something they have said. Good Luck.

P - Absolutely insure your ring! You will hate yourself if, god forbid, something happens and you are unable to replace it! My insurance covers everything from losing the stone because the claws loosened, to the ring being stolen, to just plain old losing it. It is well worth the money in my opinion!

Hello P - My engagement ring is also from a jeweler from LA’s Jewelry District, and we just recently got it insured through State Farm. If it’s of any help, our yearly premium is $172 for a personal articles policy. I would highly suggest getting it insured!

I have a question to ask…. Has anyone heard of or used http://www.thebridalshop.com for any wedding/bridesmaid dress related purchase? Are they a reliable online vendor?

Thank you!

Jessi - there is a seller on Ebay that sells 50 personalized napkins for $5.99. They have tons of colors and styles to choose from. I can’t remember the seller’s name, but if you look up personalized cocktail napkins, it should pop right up. Good luck!

Konayipark: I have been to that store in person. I never knew they had a website too. The saleswoman I worked with was one of the nicest I encountered in the 9(!) different stores I went to while searching for my dress. She was completely honest about how each dress looked and never pressured me to buy. The owner was around that day as well and also very nice. I didn’t end up buying from there, but I would feel comfortable ordering from them online based on my experience at the store.

Jessi - Two ways to cut the cost of personalized napkins, is to mix in unpersonalized napkins with the personalized ones. This way you have twice as many napkins with some personalized and some not. Another way is to buy unpersonalized napkins and emboss them with your new last initial.

I second Gretchen’s question about Spanx/Assets. And does anyone have any advice for bodyslimmers? My dress is a strapless, mermaid-style lace gown and I want to be able to eat and not look like I’m pregnant! :) Thanks!

KDN, speaking of looking pregnant…
My little sister told me today that she is 5 months pregnant. My wedding is in 6 weeks! There is no way she will fit in the (beautiful absolutely perfect) dresses we picked out months ago. They are strapless tea length dresses in white with a large bright floral print along the hem (i designed my whole wedding around them).
Since she’s the MOH i told her she can just pick another dress in one of the wedding colors. I love my sister and i dont want to make her uncomfortable but i’m also a little selfish and i dont want my wedding party to look mismatched. I only have her and 2 other BMs.
Does anyone have any suggestions on dresses or styles that would work.
Also, how the heck do you fit someone who is growing at that rate for a dress ahead of time?!

We had a Sangria shower and my FH made a wonderful dispenser filled with sangria and every fruit you can imagine. Pottery Barn has a great receipe for Sangria…Here is the link:

http://www.potterybarn.com/gift/thm/THMHTN/index.cfm?cm_src=sch&words=sangria

Make sure you click on the ‘How to Throw a Sangria Party’ tab for additional information.

Hope this helps!

Regarding the SPANX/ASSETS comparison, Spanx is made with much better material…they might seem the same, but I hear the ASSETS disintegrate after just one use and aren’t as effective in hiding bulges/rolls…..I own many SPANX undergarments and they are VERY durable….hope that helps!
