About Mrs. Bell Pepper

Finding a good wedding photographer can be tough since there are so many to choose from, and so much to learn about photography in general. Nowadays photojournalism, rather than traditional portrait photography, is very popular. Wedding photography is also becoming much more expensive, many costing $5000+ for approximately 8 hours. When you look for a photographer, you should go through all the galleries to get an idea of their style, and to see how they make each wedding unique. There are some photographers who like to take the same shots so you kind of know what you’ll be expecting. Here’s a good example:

003

Three weddings, the dress shot looks the same in all!

There are some photographers I found in the Philadelphia/NJ region who provide a very fresh and innovative style and a reasonable pricing rate for anyone with a tight budget:

For a photographer in the lower end price range ($3000+), I would recommend Jennifer Childress (www.jennchildphoto.com). We met with a lot of photographers in the Philly area, and she offered us what we were looking for in a package, was VERY reasonably priced (much less expensive than the others we looked at, and we were much more impressed with her), and one of the nicest vendors I have yet to meet - just an all over fantastic woman. We are very excited to be working with her for our wedding!

I live in South Jersey, but my photographer travels to the city and and does amazing photojournalism. His packages start at $1700 — Jordan Wolochow - Vision Life Photography (http://visionlife.tv)

ooop, sorry, we booked him awhile ago and I guess his prices have increased according to his website they now start at $2300. But we found that you get tons more included in his packages than most of the other South Jersey and Philadelphia photographers we looked at.

Sofia and Cliff are fantastic for their area and Sofia is one of those photogs who’s going to seem like a steal in 3 years when her $4000 is $7000. :)

For my budget, $3000 is not low end. Do you know of anything in New Jersey in the $1000-1500 range? (I’m trying to keep my entire wedding to around $10,000.)

For those budgeting RE photography: You can shift some of your costs to the day-of service and away from post-wedding prints if you negotiate that you own digital copies of all photos. Then you get prints wherever you want, or negotiate post-wedding services as a separate transaction with the same photographer/studio.

Firesong - I understand completely. I ended up booking a photographer for $1100.. which was actually waaay over my budget. However, it is for 8 hours of coverage, plus I have rights to the images, which means that I can go to Target and make a print for my aunt or cousin w/o speding my life savings. (something that you may want to consider when looking for photographers!) I plan on saving money for a year and then getting a nice album made… but in the meantime, I’ll be able to put together a fun wedding scrapbook. I’m a photography student, so the photos are extremely important to me. I would have had a classmate shoot the wedding, but it will be during the semester and right before finals, so I didn’t want to stress out any of my friends. You can always arm a close friend with a camera during the reception to help supplement the photos from the photographer.

I’m from central MD, so I can’t help you with too many specifics.. Personally, I would check the phone book/newspaper to find some of the local photographers in your town for a better deal. Many people do weddings on the side, so you would be able to get a good price without necessarily sacrificing quality. Whoever you choose, it’s important to look at all of the portfolio - ask if you can see photos from an entire wedding, not just the selection of great shots on the website gallery.

I found the following two photographers from the wedding photojournalist association http://www.wpja.com

Reena Rose (NJ) - starting at $1200
http://www.reenarose.com/

Toby Morris (CT) - starting at $1500

Hope this helps!

You’ve helped me realize how trite the dress shot is these days! I don’t even think I want that shot since it’s not special anymore. :-(

As a wedding photographer I can’t empathize enough how important it is to work with someone who’s portfolio you love, and who you feel completely comfortable around, since she will be the vendor you will work with most closely on that day.

One of the biggest factors in determining the price of a package is whether your photographer shoots film, digital, or a combination of both–often this can be negotiated, but not always. Beware of someone who is willing to be talked down too much–you want to work with professionals, and you are paying for their expertise. As with every other aspect of wedding planning, it is important to hire people that you respect and trust, and then trust them to do their jobs well.
