Mrs. Kiwi, Los Angeles Age and Occupation in 06: 27, Bookkeeper Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, P.E. Teach/Coach @ private schools in LA Engagement Date: March 31, 2006 Wedding Date: November 3, 2007 Venue: Radisson Hotel About Me: I'm a bookkeeper who failed high school algebra. I'm currently living in Los Angeles, literally a street over from where I grew up with Mr. Kiwi, my honey of three years. We have a jumbo mini-dachshund (seriously, he's huuuuge), and we're planning an autumn themed wedding on a shoestring, paid for by ourselves. The wedding date is my late grandma's birthday, I needed her there somehow, and that seemed like the best way for us. I can't believe I'm a Bee! I couldn't be more proud!
About Mrs. Kiwi

We’re Going For “Leafy”

May 14th, 2007 @ 5:49 pm by Mrs. Kiwi

Well, my D.I.Y. cake topper has quickly become a D.O.N.T.. Alas, my talent is wasted by attempting to make anything at all artistic. Before you think I’m all thumbs, I used to excel in art! Now, I can’t even paint something without my fingers getting stuck together. Don’t even ask. blush06

This was such a crappy thing to find out, because what the heck am I going to do for our cake topper?? Well, I think I have found the answer. As it’s been tattooed into the Weddingbee readers’ psyche, we’re having a fall wedding. So we’re all about the trees and leaves and crap. Lovely when you put it that way, yes? happy05

Readers, behold my cake topper.

I’ll be ordering this tree from By Apryl, where the leaves are made of gemstones such as peridot, quartz, citrine and mother of pearl. The above tree is a large, fall-colored tree with garnet, citrine and peridot leaves with gold wiring. The size is 6″x6″ and the cost is $35.00 for 50 stones. Since my top tier is 6″. I suppose I should get something smaller. The next size down is medium, 5″x5″ and $25.00 for 34 stones.

Seen here, in amethyst:

The smallest size is 3.5″x4″ and $18.00 for 26 stones. This one is carnelian:

On her site, you can find the meanings of the gemstones you can pick. I’m thinking of using only citrine since it’s a clear golden color. Citrine stands for the November birthstone (my birth month AND the month of the wedding), a symbol of hope, youth, health and fidelity. Perfect.

She makes cake toppers with the bride and groom as well, for $150.00.

Whoa you’re having a FALL theme?? Where’d THAT come from??? ;-)

Seriously, that tree is soooooooooooooo cute and perfect for your wedding!!! I kind of liked the mixed colors though, like the first tree. Why are you thinking of reducing it to only citrine? (although the citrine symbolism is perfect!)

That is so creative! What a good idea! I see some toppers as really tacky but I really think this is nice. You will have to post a photo once you get it. I think the first andf third one are the nicest but I like the multi colored one at the end.

I like the intertwined trees. Great symbolism, and it eliminates the whole the-cake-topper-people-don’t-look-like-us thing.

Not sure I would have some of the stones loose on top of the cake (fallen leaves) lest they claim a tooth, tho it looks pretty. But maybe replicate the look of the stones with something edible, like fragments of gummy bears or gum drops in the right colors?

What, no photos of the rejected DIY? Anything to share that we can learn from your DIY attempt?

Iris, I agree with the smattering of stones. I don’t so much like that idea. :) Maybe some pop rocks, instead?

As for my rejected DIY, I’ll try to take some pics. I am seriously (SERIOUSLY) ashamed of what I’ve done.

As for lessons, I will fill you guys in on that. :)

FYI I am not sure where you live but you can usually find trees like these in Chinatown type of areas for about $6 each. This way you are getting what you want super cheap.

I think its a great idea and may steal it for my garden themed wedding.
