Beehive

May 15th, 2007 @ 4:16 pm by Beehive

In today’s hive:

  1. l is having an Indian wedding with bright colors: hot pink and turquoise. For centerpieces, she’s considering tall vases of cymbidium orchids submerged in water; would light pink orchids match her colors?
  2. Gretchen would like to know if anyone has compared “Spanx” with the much less expensive Target version, “Assets”. Apparently, both are made by the same company, and it would be nice to save some money if they work the same.
  3. konayipark is wondering whether anyone has used The Bridal Shop, and if so, would they recommend it?
  4. jft5 is hoping to find a DIY template for menus. Can anyone help out?
  5. glass is in the market for an easy sangria recipe.
  6. KDN is looking for a bodyslimmer for her strapless, mermaid-style lace gown. Suggestions?
  7. Cindy wants to know if Jim Helm bridesmaid dresses run true to size; she’s heard conflicting things.
  8. tama has a dress dilemma. Her sister and MOH just told announced she’ll be six months pregnant at the wedding, and they need to find her a new dress, fast. Her colors are magenta and kiwi–can anyone recommend any dresses or styles that would work? Also, how do you fit someone for size who’s growing so quickly?
  9. bliss is meeting with her ceromony pianist next week, and is considering using a processional other than the wedding march. Any suggestions (other than Ava Maria?)

Bliss–virtually anything with “fanfare” in the name would certainly be appropriate. I think if you ask the pianist ahead of time to bring in some ideas, he or she will be itchin’ to play anything other than the same old same old. Give them an idea of what vibe you want out there–stately? light? any adjective that grabs you–and ask for maybe 3-4 suggestions. FWIW, there are fanfares actually called Bliss, but they’re trumpet tunes that might sound odd on a piano.

Gretchen - I was wondering this myself, so I ordered one from “Spanx” as well as purchased the “Assets” line from Target. It appears the material from the “Spanx” line is of a better quality than the “Assets” line. However, I could not tell much of a difference between the two under my dress. They both looked the same on me. In the end, I went for the “Assets” line and return the more pricey “Spanx” line.

tama - I just went through the same situation with my sister as well as one of my bridesmaids. I found that the best dress style for the growing baby bump is one with an empire waist. I also had the dress maker order extra material so they could sew an extra panel in the front if her stomach grew more than the larger dress size we ordered.

Classic Sangria

from, “Sangria: Fun and Festive Recipes”
1 orange sliced
1 lime sliced
1/2 lemon sliced
1 1/2 oz brandy
2 Tbsp sugar
750ml bottle light red wine, chilled
12 oz club soda, chilled
about 3 cups ice cubes

In a 2 quart or larger glass pitcher, combine the fruit slices. Add the brandy and sugar, and stir until the sugar has dissolved. Slowly pour in the wine, stirring gently. Refrigerate at least two hours or as long as overnight.

When ready to serve, add the club soda and stir gently. Fill highball, wine or other decorative glasses with ice and slowly pour the sangria over the ice, allowing some fruit to fall into each glass.

l, I think the light pink orchids would look great! Bring in the brighter colours in the table linens to tie it together. But if you’re still concerned, I think you can get darker pink cymbidium orchids as well. By the way, the cymbidium orchid submerged in water in tall clear vases was my first choice centrepiece, but was unfortunately veto’ed by my mother… you have great taste!

Cindy, the JH bridesmaid dress I wore was not true to size. It ran large, the way wedding dresses do. This happened to the other bridesmaids as well.

Bliss - I am walking in on Handel’s Arioso (Thanks Be To God)… it’s really gorgeous! My mom walked to it… I’m leaving out the second title… ha!

Tama - I would suggest to you to find a designer with a store near your sister so she can constantly be in and out for fittings. A good seamstress can anticipate, and tailor to, a growth like that. Honestly, she should start fittings around her four month mark, and maybe go in as often as every two weeks. Definitely order her dress a few sizes up from what fits now, because we all know it’s easier to take in a dress than it is to let it out. HTH! :)

tama - a very popular style right now is the high empire waistline (right under the bust) and very full skirt (or trapeze skirt shape) that flares out directly below. So this style dress would be not only very contemporary, but very flexible and require minimum alterations regardless of whatever size the MOH ends up on W-day.

Bliss- check out the album a bride’s guide to wedding music. I think there are 61 classical songs, you can listen to clips on itunes just to give you some ideas.

Konayipark: I have been to that store in person. I never knew they had a website too. The saleswoman I worked with was one of the nicest I encountered in the 9(!) different stores I went to while searching for my dress. She was completely honest about how each dress looked and never pressured me to buy. The owner was around that day as well and also very nice. I didn’t end up buying from there, but I would feel comfortable ordering from them online based on my experience at the store.

I got this from my friend and it is totally easy!!!

1 bottle of white wine (does not have to be good wine)
Half a bottle of champagne
1/2 to 3/4 cup of brandy (key ingredient)
If you want to get people more f*cked up add 3 shots of grand manier
Add a cup or two of sugar depends on how sweet you want it. Add more if you like.
Chop up 2 or 3 apples oranges, lemons, Add strawberry for the pretty color but add strawberry right before serving otherwise it gets soggy. Make this at least 1 day before serving so it tastes better.

This should serve about 6 ppl.

I - I think the light pink will be a lovely complement to your colors! The addition of the lighter hue will help to tie the two very bold colors together.

Gretchen - I’ve tried the assets line and was not too impressed. The material doesn’t stand up to multiple wearings. If you’re only wearing it for wedding day, you’ll be fine - just don’t expect to get a ton of use out of it.

I concur with Carissa. I wasn’t impressed with the Assets line either. However, I haven’t tried the Spanx yet to see how they compare.

Tama - Look at Aria’s bridesmaid dresses. They come in your colors and they have a great section about fitting bridesmaids and a whole section on fitting maternity bridesmaid’s. They have about 3 or 4 styles that would work and even if you don’t go with them (not sure how long till the wedding, I’m guess 4-6 months given the bride’s announcement!) but at the very least their website is worth checking out for their “sizing” section. http://www.ariadress.com

Hiya! My FI and I are skipping the traditional bridal or couples shower and having a co-ed, casual bbq at our house next month. i know it’s against etiquitte, but we are having a very small wedding (50ppl) and wanted to invite co-workers to the bbq that aren’t invited to the wedding. we don’t care about presents, we just want to have a fun gathering with friends & family before the wedding in september. Any ideas how to handle the invites without offending anyone?

adding to lucy’s recipe…. mixing it all the day before is a good idea but if you want it to be sparkling you may want to wait til just before you serve it to add that champagne.

Our tentative date is on Jan 26, 2008. Does anyone know of a good ceremony venue in the San Francisco/Oakland/Alameda area for the month of January? Our only requirement is that it is not a church because both are families are not religious. An outdoor ceremony would be great but it’ll probably rain. We will probably end up having a chinese wedding banquet after the ceremony. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Need help from all you creative ladies out there!
I’m doing a candy buffet with a Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory theme. I’m going to do candy topiaries ala’ Martha Stewart and Dylan Lauren but what should I use as containers? Glass containers just seem so blah for the theme…

L - that sounds great; another good idea is to fill vases with colored water - blue/turquoise to echo your color theme :)

Jill–I’m using Carl Alan Creations for my wedding next month, and they are awesome. What set them apart from others (like Beautiful Blooms, etc) is that they actually take you into their workroom and make samples with you! So I got to see whether what I was thinking got through to them, and told them if they weren’t getting it.

Christina,
Use the glass containers, and use brightly colored tissue paper on them, you can even cut out different shapes, layers pieces, cut silly zig zags, and fill the vases with colored water to give them different looks. The tissue paper should stick pretty well with a spray adhesive, or use watered down elmer’s. My favorite glue to use is actual acrylic matt medium. (You can get it at in the stain section any home improvement store in a can which is cheaper than an art or craft store.)

Gretchen:

I’ve never tried Spanx, but have used Assets for about a year now. While not nearly the quality of Spanx (I’m assuming based on price), they work well and have never been sorry for using the cheaper alternative.
