Flower Girl Dress Fitting

May 15th, 2007 @ 5:46 pm by Mrs. Blueberry

I mentioned several weeks ago that the shop who we ordered the FG dresses from didn’t even order them until just a couple weeks ago (everyone had been fitted months prior). They put a massive rush order on things, and promised to have the dresses in by the time of the wedding. Of course, this wouldn’t allow any time at all for any alterations that might need to be made. My cousin Julie, the mom to two of our FGs, called and gave ‘em a piece of her mind. Somehow, I’d even say miraculously (too bad tone-of-voice doesn’t transfer well via Internet), the dresses came in this past Friday.

Yesterday afternoon, Julie brought in her two–Emily and Olivia–and I brought in Jenna, one of the others. Emily and Olivia’s dresses both fit them perfectly first try–no problems there! Jenna’s, however, was a whole ‘nuther matter.

I don’t want to embarrass Jenna by discussing it too much, but she’s a heavier girl. When we ordered the dresses, they measured her and told us they’d order it in a size __. So we went ahead, and today she tried it on. The dress didn’t even come close to zipping up the back. I got the saleslady’s attention (she was *not* interested in paying any more attention to us than absolutely necessary).

The saleslady came over and I tried to discreetly indicate what the problem was. She grabbed Jenna and pulled her out of the dressing room, putting her in the big mirror room. Then she started pulling and tugging the dress closed, telling her “suck it in!” Finally, she turned to me and said “the dress just won’t close.” I was SO embarrassed for Jenna. This lady was just rude and disrespectful. I’m sorry, but I do not think you should tell a second-grade girl to “suck it in”, much less humiliate her in front of a shop full of people. Luckily, Jenna took it in stride.

Julie went to talk to the saleslady, returning a few minutes later to say that the shop would be paying for whatever alterations necessary to make the dress fit (it’s too late to order in another size). I was *so* furious at that shop–not only for their repeated incompetency, but for how they treat their customers.

I won’t post the shop’s name or a review of it until after the wedding, but I’m sure you know what I’ll say then.

Upcoming happier posts: FG baskets, programs, ceremony/vows, harpist meeting, table runners, hair trial, and more!

That is absolutely unbearable to even hear about. What is it with some of these bridal shops? I had a terrible experience at one of them (a larger chain store) and vowed never to return again. Rather than making the experience something special, they are taking away from it all. I’m sorry, but I would have slapped that woman silly : )

You are taking Julie with you to be the heavy for all your vendor meetings, right? She sounds like a valuable negotiator to have around.

That is just horrifying!!! I can’t believe they would do that!!!!

And I agree with Sarah! You better be giving Julie a nice big thank you present. :-)

Good heavens that poor little girl. I get that many of the bridal salon salespeople are snobby beyond reason and care more about how much cash you have to throw around than anything else, but this girl is just a child! How dare she treat her that way? It’s nothing short of pure dumb luck that it didn’t hurt your flower girl’s feelings and make her self-conscious. The absolute LAST thing you need to do with a heavier child is to make them feel bad about their body, that can only exacerbate the problem.

I hope you tell every last Kansas bride you ever meet never to shop in this store.

Jenna was more of an adult than the salesperson!

Ugh, a salesperson ordered the wrong size for a girl on our local board. The manager told the knottie, “Just hit the gym and then it will fit.” She was talking to a yoga instructor.

You need to put this up on your local board (in your bio to get around the rules), this place deserves to lose business.

That is absolutely horrible. Sometimes bridal shops can be totally mean.

I will enjoy reading about the last days before your wedding!
