Weddingbee Demographics

May 16th, 2007 @ 12:30 pm by Mrs. Bee

BIL Bee came across an interesting site yesterday that analyzes website demographics. This is what they have to say about us:

[Weddingbee.com] appeals to an almost exclusively female, college educated, 18-34 crowd, Asian audience.

Here are some interesting details:

  • A visitor to WB is 1.75 times more likely to be female than the average Internet user
  • 3.1 times more likely to be 25-34
  • 2.2 times more likely to make $0-30k
  • 11.8 times more likely to be Asian!
  • 1.7 times more likely to have a college education

I don’t know why we have such a large Asian audience, but we do want to attract as diverse an audience as possible. I guess we’ll need to work harder on that. Anyway, interesting stuff! :)

Hmm, how can they possibly know the ethnic make up of the WB readers? Are they judging this simply by the ethnicity of some of the bees? How silly.

I’ve got 4/5. But I’m wondering the same thing as Mary, how does your computer know your ethnicity? Or your education?

I’m very suprised the female to male ration isn’t much higher.

Do you think readers from Xanga have anything to do with it? Xanga’s users are primarily Asian, right?

Also, I’m not too suprised that there are more women then men - it’s a wedding site. Also, the age range makes sense as that is the age range that the highest number of women are getting married in.

As for college education, that may make sense for the following reason:
A woman with a college education is more likely to be in a position where she has access to the internet during the day at a desk job than one who is not.
*disclaimer - I’m making a generalization, there are of course exception and I’m not a professional statitian!*

Guess I’m not your average reader but I still love the site! I’m 39, Hispanic, and am lucky enough to be in a profession where I make a good salary. My fiance is European and 40 & we have both gotten great tips from Weddingbee - just goes to show you that you are attracting some diversity…

I definitely think the huge Xanga following is the reason for the Asian representation. But with the new, more diverse Bee Bloggers, I am sure it will expand beyond that!

I think that most of the readers are probably pretty diverse but most of the bloggers are Asian (including most of the new bloggers just added) so it makes sense that it would appeal to a higher then average Asian crowd.

The website says it uses panels- basically, they start with a group of people for whom they already know this information, and then track their browsing. This is used for information like gender, age, income, and race. http://www.quantcast.com/our-estimates.jsp

Additionally, they track information based on what they can tell from overall internet hits (this type of information is usually made available by websites to advertisers)- number of hits, and the geographical origin of those hits. (It is possible they are considering hits that are actually from within Asia and including this in their analysis, but hard to say.)

Hope this helps!

I’m older, make more money, not Asian, but I am female and college educated (more than, in fact.) I think the important part is that I’m planning a wedding!

Well, I guess I don’t know if my computer knows that I’m white as opposed to brown, black, tan, or other.
But I fall into the other 4 demographic categories.

Yeah, how do they know?

I don’t know what it is but I didn’t know the bloggers were asian (except for Mrs. Bee) until the pics were added to the profiles, and yet I was still drawn to WB. Could just be the cute crafts? I wasn’t a xanga user either. Weddings are also HUGE in asian culture and so much going on that I went online in search of help and others in my shoes.

Seeing all the responses, it would be interesting to see how it matches up. WB should conduct a poll of your own with those same metrics. I’m 4/5.

I feel like I’m writing a personal ad: white, 24-year old, college-educated female, making over $30K a year seeks secrets to her perfect wedding!

I’m white (mostly German?) and 21… and IN college, but not done yet. And since I work part-time and go to school full-time, I definitely make way less than $30k, and the same goes for my husband. But he doesn’t read Weddingbee. Haha.

Yeah I’ve always kind of wondered why there seems to be a large number of Asian Weddingbee visitors, just out of curiousity. I’m 24, college-educated, engaged, personally make $28K a year before taxes. White, of German, Norwegian, and Swedish descent (that’s Minnesota for you!).

Haha, I’m white, 20, not engaged in the slightest, but I love weddings. I’m in college, so my income is most definitely negative. You do have diverse readers on your site. Any idea where this data came from?

Mrs. Bee, I think it would be fun to do a poll of those 5 traits to see how similar (or not) the analysis was!

I too wonder how they come up with ethnicity and college education.

But I fit all the characteristics, minus the asian part.

You might find this interesting: When I was first told about the site, it was described to me by a co-worker (who is Asian), as a wedding site for engaged, straight, female Asian bloggers and readers, living in NYC, who had a significant annual income.

One thing to note is that she started visiting the site when it first launched. Seeing as it started as one woman’s blog (go Mrs. Bee!), who is Asian, and her other friends (who were mostly Asian) my friend’s perception of the site made sense for the time she was visiting it.

Now weddingbee is becoming a force on the internet. It would make sense that as the site became more widely known, it would attract a broader demographic of applicants and readers. Since it’s launch, the site has spread across the country and into Canada, featuring women (and the occassional man!) from all walks of life.

One thing is for sure. We all love Weddingbee!

I agree, a poll is in order. I do want to say that I think you should expand your choice of blogger ethnicicity (does that sentence make sense?), location, and wedding budgets. You would appeal to more brides and give brides more of a range of ideas to get inspired by.

Some of that profiling is just true, on average, in general for brides.

Definitely an Asian vibe/taste on this website.

I think WB’s recent recruitment for new Bees mentioned diversity is a plus, so hope to see that continue. Agree that postings by more women (and men!) of varying races and more variety in cultures/religions would be all positive and informative, since the idea is to share ideas.

No. I’m Black but in high school my nickname was canterbury egg (chocolate on the outside, White and Asian on the inside). I went to a predominantly Asian high school in NorCal. Maybe that counts for something. Haha. :-)

I would definitely agree that there is a noticeable Asian slant to the site, but given its beginnings it makes sense. That said I love the diversity in the new brides and I look forward to meeting more not only in ethnicity but also in budget!!!!!

I don’t know how accurate that data is. How can anyone tell what someone’s ethnicity is by some number that is suppose to be their internet address? But I’m Asian and LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE Weddingbee. I’ve really enjoyed all the crafty ideas and gorgeous pictures on here. Thanks Weddingbee!

How did BIL bee get those demographics? I don’t remember being surveyed. And you probably know very well why it’s mostly Asian visitors - all Asians know each other to some degree, especially in Metros. :)
