4 Generations of Weddings

May 17th, 2007 @ 8:25 am by Mrs. Snow Pea

I have always loved looking through people’s photo albums because I enjoy seeing the history behind their families and lives. So I took it upon myself to scan all of Mr. Snow Pea’s grandma’s old photos. Since her passing, it has been really therapeutic. It was a real delight to see wedding photos of her and her family - it’s a piece of history that I would like to keep and show our future children. Some of these will be incorporated into our wedding guest book. (We will touch up the photos as they tend to blur when they are scanned.)

Mr. Snow Pea’s Grandma and Grandpa, 1946
She had a really long veil and detachable train. Her mother was a seamstress and made all the dresses.

Here’s her wedding invitation. I couldn’t believe I found this!

Mr. Snow Pea’s Great Grandma and Grandpa. We date this to be at least before 1912. They were Polish immigrants and met and married here in New Jersey. Mr. Snow Pea wants to know why they have such stern looks on their faces.

Passiac, NJ - I wonder if this place still exists?

This is possibly Mr. Snow Pea’s Great Grandma’s big sister. My fashion history friend dates it at 1890.

Great aunt and uncle. We actually met them last month. They are the youngest and last surviving siblings of Grandma.

It makes me all tingly inside to know we will be adding to this history. Just thought I would share.

We’re next!

Those are really really great! Unfortunately we don’t have very many wedding pictures in our family…my parents have 1 polaroid and then there’s nothing from anyone else. That’s why I’m a big fan of getting at least *some* wedding pictures nowadays because I know how much I’ve love to be able to see those of my family.

I absolutely love pictures like that…I’m planning on taking old pictures like this from both his side and mine and making some sort of display saying something corny like “May our love grow as the loves of past…” or something!!

The reason the Great Grandma and Grandpa is so stern is probably because back then, the shutter speeds were so long (the picture had to be “taken” for a long time) in order to get the right impression on the paper. The subjects COULD NOT move at all, or else it would get all blurry. So most times they had them stand very still and stern so there was less chance of them moving. Just a fun little tidbit!

What beautiful and perfect pictures. Same here, not many wedding pictures of any of my family, I have a couple of my mom and the cake, but that’s it. Good luck on creating your album/ guestbook. Also, that it so awesome about the invite! I would love to know what me parents did for their invitations.

miss snow pea! you’re awesome. FYI you have the most original/unique blog ever. it’s all in your personality. keep up the good work! i don’t know how you do it, with your big day coming up so soon, working, classes, etc. Kudos to you! Lily

Miss Snow Pea says:

Aww Lily, Thank you so much. I don’t feel like I am that good sometimes, so it’s good to know you are all enjoying it.

I actually did some googling and apparantly Passaic NJ was a big neighborhood for Polish immigrants. I read that weddings of that time were a solemn ocassion so that might also be why they aren’t smiling. ;)

A friend of mine suggested that I make a sign saying Tell us a story if you know something about these people. It’s also a way to get some history.

The couple in the last picture actually look like they could be a modern-day couple :)

That is really great to have those old pictures, I don’t think there are many pictures to be had of many of my grandparents’ and other relatives, who were poor and in Korea. But I do love having the stone from FI’s grandmother’s e-ring in my ring now.

Brianne says:

wow, thanks for sharing these pictures. they’re fantastic! the bridesmaid’s bouquet look so big, i wonder if that was the trend back then.

Passaic, NJ still exists in the northern part of NJ, about 10 miles west of NYC.

wow I wish I could trace my family’s history back that far. I came across my parent’s wedding photos a while ago and they made me tear up.

I’m going to be wearing my grandma’s wedding dress from 1945, and I’d like to have wedding pictures from both sides of our families up… but my BF’s dad’s parents had a really rotten marriage. What should I do?

Miss Snow Pea says:

phr0gg - Thanks, I know Passaic still exists. I meant the photo studio. I googled it but nothing popped up.

tofu - I have a few photos of my mom in her chinese dress, but her “western” photo, she won’t give it to me to scan. She won’t even let me go near her room to get it ahahaha I wish I could post it because she looks sooooo pretty. I am going to try to get Brother Pea to yoink it for me.

k - I am sorry to hear that. I think it’s a great idea for you to put a picture up of your side because your wearing your gma’s dress. It would be a great thing to see. Ask your fi and see if he’s comfortable with putting up his parents photo and if he thinks it appropriate.

i just had a client give us all 4 sets of grandparents weddng photos… we are going to scan them for her so that she can print them all in 8×10 so that she can frame them on the guest table :)

such a cute idea…

Passaic definitely exists! Awesome pictures. Kinda random but if you like old pictures (other than your family’s) I just discovered a new blog that only has old pictures. Hopefully this comment won’t go in the spam box (and I am in no way affiliated with this blog) - it’s called “shorpy”.

Annie - Thanks for the info on Shorpy. I do love old photos. Like Mrs. Bee said, we’re using a more aggressive filter and it’s random. Even my comments will sometimes go into moderation. Suggestions and info on other sites are always welcomed. :)
