About Mrs. Snow Pea

I am beginning to feel like the human experiment. I have always been blessed with good skin, but I was never a high maintenance person. My typical regiment is shower, slap on some lotion and out the door in flip flops I go. Now that I am breaking out, I don’t know what to do or what to buy. All the products out there just make me cross eyed. It’s also costly to try something new that may or may not work. In my case, I have extremely sensitive skin too, so lots of things will instantly irritate or burn my skin.

This is why I feel like the human experiment. I have been using:

  • Proactive Body Wash to clear skin
  • Neutrogena face wash
  • Mederma to fade scars on back of arms - This really works!
  • Neutrogena face moisturizer with SPF 15
  • Skin so Soft sunscreen SPF 30 on my arms so I don’t worsen any scars and avoid funny tan lines.
  • Nivea body lotion - I just love this stuff
  • Crest White Stripes to whiten teeth (and drinking coffee through a straw. I really should just stop all together but coffee is the only thing that keeps me sane.)
  • In addition, I have been trying to grow my nails out. My hair is also down to my waist now (I have a short waist lol). I just don’t know what to do with it. I am looking forward to lopping it all off to my chin and donating it to Locks of Love after the wedding.

What have you been using? Any suggestions? What do you recommend or don’t recommend and why?

I can vouch for Tres White (usually you can get it from a dentist, but it is cheaper on amazon), which is gel in a tray for teeth whitening. But I’ve alway read to go easy on whitening (for a few people over-doing it can make teeth look too translucent). For acne I had a Differin prescription (also a gel)–after trying all those OTC salicylic acid type things, those seemed to make it worse. The Differin will make you peel and dry at first but eventually it did work.

I have sensitive skin as well and I LOVE the Aveda sensitive skincare line. I started using it a few months ago and I can’t say enough good things about it. I’ve never had bad skin, but Aveda has made my skin glow. I use the clenser, toner and moisturizer.

I use Proactive for my face. It recommends washing two times a day but I backed it off to just once a day (nighttime) since my skin is a bit sensitive. Been using it for 2 years and it works great for me…

I’m pretty low maintenance and admittedly cheap when it comes to my skin, but then, I also have pretty clear skin so I figure I will not bother to spend much money on it unless it starts acting up! I just wash my face in the morning with a facecloth and water, and slap on some Dove sensitive skin SPF 15 moisturizer. At night, usually just a facecloth and water again. If it’s looking a little flaky (my skin is on the dry side), which happens every few days, then I use a sensitive skin exfoliant from the Body Shop, followed by Clinique facial cleanser and then Clinique moisturiser which is very light.

I have found that birth control pills have had a really great side effect of clearing up my skin since I started them 8 years ago so I really don’t have to work too hard at keeping my skin looking great. A possible solution for those of you with really unpredictable breakouts - talk to your doctor. Some docs will actually prescribe birth control specifically for skin problems.

you sound a lot like me, I was blessed with beautiful skin too, now that I’m stressing all the time I’m breaking out, I have found trying ways to relax will help some and then try to figure out what the breakouts are, if they are pimples or blackheads find something specifically for that I think my sister uses Noxema (she has really sensitive skin) if it is more of a dry skin/rash then its probably excema (stress induces these breakouts more often) then honestly all you need is a clear gel of something with cortizone(sp?) in it. I also suggest taking a vitamin everyday it helps a lot with skin and nails

Get Nailtique for your nails. They have different formulas- choose the best for your nail type. You have to polish your nails with this formula everyday. If you are dedicated enough, you will see GREAT results.

I’ve noticed I’ve been having a lot of stress breakouts around my hairline that I didn’t have before. I never had acne or any skin problems growing up, but I have fierce combination skin now. I have been using the Aveeno Ultra-Calming Foaming Cleanser since February, and things haven’t been getting any better. Actually, the dry spots are getting more dry and more troubled skin in my T zone. I was considering trying Murad’s Combination Skin Regimen to clear things up.

How funny! You sound just like me. I’ve never had problems with my skin or even attempted to take care of it, but as the wedding approaches, I’ve been having some bad luck w/ my skin… random breakouts and a bad sun glass tan. So far, I’ve just been using Dove fash wash, Neutrogena moisturizer and toner, and covering my weird tan with some Bare essentials. I bought the ingredients for an aspirin face mask, but I haven’t had the chance to try it out yet.

Crest white strips is next on my list. I LOVE coffee and can’t get through the day without it. I should try out your straw trick…

I love st. ives apricot scrub. (There are various formulas.)

Also check stress and hormones (birth control can be a factor).

Nivea good bye cellulite-only been using this for about 2 weeks and I like what I see so far. Crest white strips will be used closer to the wedding date. Growing out my hair for the past 6 months. Regular trips to the spa for the good ole’ waxing below the belt. Miracle face cream from skinceticals (no really it works in magical ways!) And last but not least the wonderful diet. August cannot get here soon enough!

I wanted to suggest an alternative to Locks of Love simply because there have been several concerns about that charity recently. Pantene Pro V’s Beautiful Lengths is a charity that has a better record. Locks of Love does help a worthy cause but their high overhead, low donation rate and the fact that they charge money scares me away.

For white strips, I’m actually wearing the Target brad right now and I have already found them to be more effective than Crest’s. I did the Crest ones 3 times and barely noticed a difference. In my 2 days of using the 7-day Target ones I am actually seeing a difference.

The problem I’m having is to get my fiance to start a beauty regimen of some sorts. He’s very much a guy’s guy, so he doesn’t get into face wash and teeth strips. I’d like for him to start so that his skin will be clearer and teeth will be whiter by our wedding (in 2 months), but I don’t know how to bring it up in a nice way. I don’t want to hurt his pride by saying “honey, it’s time to take care of those zits….” Any suggestions on how to beautify my man?

hmmm. well usually i find i break out less when my skin is well moisturized and balanced. (Obviously)

but i started using l’occitane products a few months ago and i’ve found my skin to be so soft and just really nice. their products are a bit pricy, but they also have smaller sample sizes you can buy to try out before spending a lot more on the expensive stuff.

the good thing is the smaller sample sizes usually last a long time.

i use the immortelle products because… and i’m embarassed to say this but… lindsay lohan uses them. and i’m not a fan of her. but i noticed (because you can’t get away from her) that her skin used to be so so. but then it just started always looking radiant and in one of those shows that tell “secrets” she mentioned that’s what she uses… so i figured it must work and tried it. and for me it did. so i recommend it for everyone.

here is the sample product i am referencing.
(i know you’re not old, but it’s never quite too early to start)

Just don’t forget that it will take a few weeks to get your skin used to a new skin care regime. So, if you start breaking out right away from a new lotion or cleanser, don’t think that it’s necessarily the new product causing the breakouts, it could be the old one and/or the new one starting to clear out those pores (and causing the junk to start to rise to and cause breakouts–sorry to be gross!).
JMHO, I could be wrong, though.

I am having troubles getting my fiance into a beauty routine. He is very much a guy’s guy, and doesn’t really get into face washes or teeth whitening strips. I would like him to have clearer skin and whiter teeth by our wedding (in 2 months!) but I’m not sure how to convince him to use these products without hurting his feelings. I can’t very well say “Honey, we need to clear up those zits….” Any suggestions on how to get him into a beauty routine??

Melissa says:

Emily,
My guy is the same way: facewash? Why can’t I use my regular soap? Luckily, we live under the same roof and I do all the shopping. I just replaced his body wash with Neutrogena body wash and added some Neutrogena facewash to the shower, and I remind him at night to wash-up. I also told him that we were going to whiten our teeth together because I want to do mine and his need to match. He’s taken it well!

farmgal says:

I have super sensitive skin made worse by the city’s really hard water. I found that Proactive, while helpful with the hard water issue, only added to the problem during times of stress. My dermatologist said this is because hormones change rapidly in times of stress, but the dose of treatment in Proactive doesn’t.

So now I’m using Cetaphil for sensitive skin in the morning, a Swedish cream-based gentle cleanser, Pond’s sensitive skin facial cream (at night), and have been relentlessly faithful to Differin (my pores (normally gigantic) are teeny tiny now, and I rarely have breakouts).

Thanks for all the Mederma info– have wanted to try, but have been skeptical until now!

This is so funny! I feel the same way but didn’t realize I felt the same way until I read your message. FUNNY!
*I am using proactive solution religiously
*I admit that I am tanning slowly at a local tanning salon, being careful not to burn, but I can’t wear white without a lovely tan
*Crest white strips
*Growing my hair out - it’s hell by the way! I can’t wait to cut it off!!!
*Getting highlights to get ready for my final high lights
*Practicing wearing heels that any normal woman would be scared of
*Zolfe for the horrible mood swings as a result of the wedding stress - yes, I confess, but it does work
*Trying out gel nails this week to see if I like

And I guess that’s it. I was never a girly girl growing up but I’m having fun trying all of this fun stuff for the big day. My FH laughs and wonders how many more dresses I need considering I only have one shower left.

I second the motion about getting my future husband to wash his face at night, use strips and shave more often. He always looks like he just built a log cabin - rough and stubbly. Anyway…good luck to everyone! I’m a bride science experiment!

Julie says:

I’m kind of doing the opposite — I’m going to cut off my hair for Locks of Love BEFORE the wedding. I just can’t imagine waiting until afterwards — it is getting waaaaaay too long for me to manage. But it will still be past shoulder length when I cut it, and I figure it will grow out a few more inches before the wedding itself…

I have tried everything for break-outs. I finally came across a skincare “program” that works perfectly. It’s the clearest my face has ever been!

1.I wash my face in the morning with Cetaphil face cleanser (you can also use Cetaphil in bar form, or the kind for sensitive skin, doesn’t much matter)

2. I then apply a 2.5% benzoyl peroxide cream to my face. I like Neutrogena On the Spot cream (it comes in a little white tube). It says on the package that it’s supposed to be used as a spot treatment, but I just put a thin layer over my entire face.

3. I put on Cetaphil moisturizer, and then put on whatever makeup I’ll be wearing.

At night, I just wash my face with the same cleanser to remove oil/dirt/makeup. It’s basically the same thing farmgal is doing, but without prescription cream.

I have tried every different thing under the sun (prescription and drugstore and Proactiv), and this regimen works the best. I also use it on my fiance, who has extremely sensitive skin. I’m of the opinion that the simpler skincare is, the better. It’s less chemicals and it’s easier to do consistently!

It’s so personal a thing…should you go to the dermatologist? I see a change in my skin if I don’t eat well and exercise…good luck

LOL! I feel you. I am very low-maintenance and have changed my routine to prep for my January wedding. I had a microderm/light peel facial earlier this month and plan to get two more before the wedding. I also switched to an SPF 30 face block in addition to moisturizer (Kiss My Face and C. O. Bigelow respecitvely) instead of the moisturizer with SPF 15 sunscreen I was using before.

I am coming off a few years of undiagnosed food allergies and have some scarring on my face from my body being traumatized from that. I hate make-up and am doing this to get away from wearing the powders I have been using lately.

Good luck finding something simple that works for you. Talk to a pro.

It is important to use cleansers and moisturisers daily! I’ve noticed that Benefits eyecream actually has decreased my “crows feet” a lot lately (been using it for 4 weeks).

But most importan, build healthy skin form the inside:
1.Start earing salmon and other “fat” fish a few times a week, the Omega-3 oils are great for your skin! No more body lotion addiction..

2.Also, drink a lot of water to clear your system!

3. In general, try to stay away from too processed foods, white sugar/flour and get that beauty sleep :)

I cut out alcohol completely the last weeks, and even though I only have about 2-3 glasses of wine weekly, I noticed my skin is clearer :D

I discovered that if you put a dab of antibacterial cream–the neosporin kind that you use for small cuts–directly on the acne twice a day, it goes away within 48 hours. If you want your fiance to do it, it’s probably going to be easier to persuade a guy to use “medicine” on his zits than anything he views as makeup….

suzy says:

i’ve been using philosphy’s hope in a jar for about 4 months now and it’s really made a difference in making my skin look brighter and clearer. i love that stuff, it has a skin clearing agent in it but it’s not harsh.

on breaking out, lots of times sunscreen is to blame. i finally found one made by loreal that’s SPF 50 and doesn’t clog pores but i don’t think it’s available in the US yet.

Annie says:

If your current acne regime isn’t working, i would highly recommend benzoyl peroxide. It is a pain to apply it day and night and it’s annoying b/c it will dye your sheets and clothes (especially purple clothes for some reason), but it works. Acne is actually a disease and the benzoyl peroxide is an antibiotic (basically). I was prescribed benzamycin by my doctor and it worked, but not as well as regular clearasil acne cream! (side note: i had to refrigerate the prescription cream and that blew.)

Also, wear an aspirin mask several times a week, and use toner after washing your face. Good luck!

One word: ProActive.

Rah says:

For your skin:

If you want to go the prescription route, I’d suggest asking the derm for Retin-A (not that I’m a dermatologist) topical. It works wonders for breakouts (and wrinkles too — NOT for the eyes though)! I’ve tried Differin, but it was incompatible with my super sensitive skin; it made my skin itchy, irritated, and rashy.

I don’t know how well Proactiv’s working for you, but from personal experience, while it seemed to work in the beginning, it soon made my skin worse. Specifically speaking, my skin became very oily, developed comedones, and pores enlarged. Not a nice sight.

If you want to go OTC, I’d suggest using spot treatments, instead of treating your entire face. OTC products are generally meant to make us dependent on them.

And try not to pop, pick, touch!

Good luck with everything. I’m sure you’re going to look stunning on your wedding day! By the way, the white strips really do work! :)
