The Wedding Kiss

May 18th, 2007 @ 5:53 pm by Mrs. Tomato

I never considered practicing my wedding kiss beforehand (I thought everyone just “went with the flow”) but when a friend told me SHE was practicing, I began to think otherwise. After all, it could cause for a very awkward moment. I just know that when the pastor says, “You may now kiss the bride,” I’m going to think, Ohmigosh, who’s head tilts which side? Where do my hands/arms go? Where are HIS hands/arms going to go? How long should it be? Do people use tongue?

So I decided to find some pictures on the web that may inspire your own wedding kiss…

bwkiss

Will he have his hands on your neck, your hands around his waist?

Or will your hands be on his face, his hands around YOUR waist?

How about a hand around each other’s waist?

Or his hand on your…um…

Will you try a passionate, Hollywood style kiss?

Or keep your bodies apart, with a casual peck?

If the Mr. has been working out, you could try this…

Or forgo the lips altogether and just let him smooch your neck.

Ms. Tomato - MISS TOMATO…This is a very sweet post, but please don’t tell me you’re going to practice your “first” kiss! You have enough to worry about and plan - let this stuff happen naturally. So what if you futz it up?! This is what makes for good memories and silly moments. People will laugh and think it’s sweet & it will give you a reason to smile. You can tell your grandchildren how you both turned your head the same way or bumped heads….

Miss T - I think that you’re right - this typically cherished photo of THE first kiss is too important to botch!! Leave the funny/awkward to the reception, doing the chicken dance in heels and tulle. Keep the ceremony memories sweet and beautiful.

lol, i debated with a college friend over the practice of a church appropriate kiss. who wants to make out in god’s house? haha. but i had one friend kiss his wife’s hand for their first kiss. but that was because the poor bride contracted mono a week before the wedding. i heard it was still very sweet [i couldn't make the wedding unfortunately]

we actually did practice and worked it all out where the lips/nose/hands should go… but in the moment, you don’t remember any of that. Our first married kiss was real, not photogenic.

HM–re: the Hollywood pic: it looks like a still from a 1930’s movie called Freaks. I would agree with going with the flow–even if it is awkward, there’s something sweet about the first kiss regardless of how it happens. ; )

The first kiss was once again something I wasn’t concerned about practicing but my DH was worried, so we did practice it. Honestly, practicing kissing was definitely not a point of stress in the wedding planning. I recommend practicing early and often ;)

What on earth is that thing in the 5th picture on the left?!?!? It just totally does not go with the rest of the picture.

Freaks is such a bizarre movie–it really is grotesque in the extreme! I really wasn’t expecting to see *that* in this post! :-D There’s a name for the disorder that the person on the left has–at the time it was called being a “pinhead” (now known as microcephaly) and was often accompanied by mental retardation. In real life, as in the movie, people who suffered from this were often turned over to the circus because they seemed comedic and amusing in their childlike ways.

The more you know…

Tea–lol, thanks. A few semesters ago I took a lit class called “Grotesque as Hero” and we addressed many conceptions and portrayals of the grotesque in American culture and cinema. We watched “Freaks” as part of the class :-)

Our photographer (when posed) doesn’t allow “real” kisses–because you get duck lips or smash face. ;-) I wouldn’t care for the first kiss, but for the posed shots, it’s something to consider!
