Stimulating Centerpieces

May 19th, 2007 @ 4:15 pm by Mrs. Pumpkin

I finally made it to our rental place today to check out what our centerpieces will look like when they are all put together. These two pictures were my inspiration ( I believe that they were both from Martha Stewart Weddings magazines but they may also be from InStyle Weddings):

Since we can’t get real cherry blossom branches here in mid-June, these flowers are fake. But I think they actually look alright! The girl who was helping us came up with the brilliant idea of using some coffee beans in the bottom of the vase to both add a splash of brown (to keep with our pink/brown colour scheme) and to anchor the flower sprig.

I know it’s hard to see in this picture but what do you think? Have you heard any other interesting tips in your planning so far?

It looks pretty good, but I would check it with water in the vase. The coffee beans might make the water brown. Probably not the look you are going for. Also without water in the vase like in the picture people will automatically know the flowers are fake. Maybe brown rocks would work. Good Luck!

very cute. i love the idea. plus if the flowers are fake you can finish your centerpieces way ahead of time and not have to worry about it a few days before your wedding. hope the center piece works out for ya!

I know that exact article because I had earmarked it as an idea myself! Note about the water that I remember specifically that was mentioned in the article - it’s supposed to be distilled. Don’t remember why but I DO remember that the reasoning was pretty important and makes a huge difference. Best of luck!

(so then you wouldn’t even need to worry about the coffee beans.) Best of luck!

Hey! That’s my exact center except mine will be with pussywillow branches. So, yep - I like it :) We’ll also be tying ribbon around it and attaching a tag with our monogram on it as well.

i don’t know if you already planned on doing this, but those kind of centerpieces look best if the flower is a couple inches below the rim. your sample has the flower a lil bit over the rim. from past experience, it looks better below.

the coffee beans look cool and different, but i think rocks may be cheaper on the whole - you’ll need a lot less than beans and i think coffee is pretty expensive generally isn’t it?

but looks like your reception should be very pretty!

I had my shower today, and the centerpieces had yellow roses mixed with pretty yellow and blue butterflies on sticks–they almost looked like flowers themselves. The sticks they were on were wrapped all the way down in floral tape. By the end of the four hour shower the water was tinted a definite green. In this case, it almost looked on purpose, but water tinted brown from coffee beans will NOT look good. it will look like sludge. Go with rocks or something else brown in there. Also, as someone said, trim the end of the flower so it’s under the water, it will look better. Otherwise, very pretty concept!

ms. pumpkin, i third the rock idea, and you might want to experiment by adding a second branch to the vase to see how it looks with two instead of one.

Love these. As long as they stay in water until just before the event you should be okay. And getting the blooming branches on Thursday before the wedding while they are just beginning to open will make sure they are ready for show time! Some of my favorite flowering branches are candy apple crabapple, plum flowering branch, prunus flowering branch, and flowering almond branch (pink or white). All of these should be readily available from California growers.

Both these pictures are exactly the look I was going for. It’s so frustrating that the flowers are out of season! My florist said that they could wire small orchids to a branch to have the same effect. However, with additional manual labor required to do this it got very expensive! I think instead we will be doing the trio with hydrangea, roses and orchids.

I also marked those exact centerpieces! I think they’re a great idea and so so pretty. You should definitely do a “trial run” though to see if the water changes color and to see how silk flowers do in water.
If your theme is not cherry blossoms, have you considered submerging cymbidium orchids in water (like in the last picture) and then using brown ribbon on the vase to tie in your color scheme? I think it might look more “professional” than the silk stem.
I’m sure whatever way you choose, it will be beautiful though. Good luck!

Definitely keep the branches below the top level of the vases. If you’re going to use the coffee in those vases, try A LOT fewer beans, maybe one finger wide.

If you want to use the coffee, I would suggest a darker roast, and to use this fake water called Everlasting Elegance http://www.michaels.com/art/online/displayProductPage?productNum=fl0010
to keep the beans in the bottom. I think some stray beans will float otherwise…

Also, in your picture, the silk flower looks like a carnation to me, which are always in season and super inexpensive, so silk would not be necessary. Perhaps try something like these silk branches instead http://www.save-on-crafts.com/peacblosspra.html (I’ve ordered twice from this site and have been very happy both times.)

Good luck!

cute idea but I would try to angle the flower so it doesn’t stick straight up. perhaps you could get some brown glass stones to accent. the coffee beans make it look a bit dark.

With artitificial flowers, I would skip the water (or fake water) entirely, because it could look like you want everyone to THINK they are real. Up-close on the table, it will probably be easy to see they are silk, and there’s nothing wrong with silk, so no need to go the extra step with the water. Silk flowers also might float, so that would draw more attention if the plastic stems are afloat and showing. Would experiment to see what look you like best.

The silk flowers shown look more like carnations than cherry blossoms?

Alternatives to coffee beans — small stones, sand, brown sea glass, or fishtank pebbles?
