About Beehive

Beehive

May 21st, 2007 @ 4:26 pm by Beehive

In today’s hive:

  1. M fell in love with this veil, but would like to find a similar one for less that $200. Can anyone point her in the right direction?
  2. K has been invited to a wedding as the date of a friend to the couple (she herself doesn’t know the bride and groom very well). What is the proper gift-giving etiquette for a “plus one” attendee? Should her date handle the gift? Should it be given from him, or from them both?
  3. Nancy is looking for suggestions for makeup artists and hair stylists in the SF Bay Area.
  4. Cedarsscrub is looking into insuring her engagement ring, but is having trouble deciding between companies. She’d love input from anyone who’s insured a ring through State Farm or Jeweler’s Mutual (read her whole story here).

K- In general, I think the couple would be really surprised to get a separate gift from you. I’d work out a deal with the person who’s bringing you along, and she what they’re comfortable with. Years ago when I was in this situation, my friend tossed in $20 on top of the $50 I was planning to spend on a gift, and we signed the card together. All the weddings I’ve attended with my fiance, though, the person named on the invite bought the gift, and both of us signed the card.

I went to a wedding with one of my best friends as his guest, not knowing the groom or bride, and my friend gave the monetary gift. I think your friend should offer to pay for all of it since you are going as a favor.

K - Whoever’s name is on the invitation should be responsible for the gift. In this case, your friend should buy the gift since you are just acting as escort.

does anyone have any suggestions for good songs to have playing in the background of a wedding video? Our videographer just asked for a list of suggestions and I’m drawing a blank!

cedar - my ring is insured through State Farm and they offered $$ to replace. Maybe you can try calling another agent and see if they’re willing to offer you what you want.

I live in OH, so that might be why, but you never know. Regardless, our policy was referred to as a “personal articles” policy and the only thing on it is the ring, no homeowner’s, car insurance, etc, required.

3. Nancy,
You could post this question on the Knot NorCal board. There are quite a few recommended artists on there. Though most are either in SF or the South Bay, I’m sure many artists would be willing to travel to the East Bay (some may charge a fee for this).

Some of the recommended names are: Jira of WowPretty, Sherrie Long, Audrey of Glowing Bridal, Taylor Pham, and Meaganne McCandess. Good luck!

Cedar– I use Jeweler’s Mutual, and I actually like the “choose your own jeweler to replace” policy. That way I can go back to the jeweler I bought the ring from and have them make another one exactly like it. With State Farm, you go through their jeweler, who may or may not do the same quality work (but State Farm would probably say it was “close enough”). If the ring ever got lost or stolen, I wouldn’t be looking for cash, I’d be looking for MY ring back, as close as I could get it, so JM is the better option for me.

State Farm was great when my apartment burned down, but they still only gave actual present value of the items (non-jewelry). Then again, their depreciation rate might be lower for jewelry, you should check it out. Maybe the ring wouldn’t go that far down in value over time.

Good luck!

Cedarscrub- I have my engagement ring insured through State Farm, it is a rider on our renters insurance. It gave us a discount on our car insurance too! It costs about $50/year, so it’s not too expensive, and insured at 100% of purchase value…

Cedarsscrub-
My ring is insured through Jeweler’s Mutual, and thus far we are pleased with them. I too like the ability to choose your own jeweler to replace the stone- it definitely gives me peace of mind when I feel as though I knock my finger on something almost everyday. I think insuring just the e-ring is about $300/year? Good luck!

Question for the hive!
I am looking for a videographer in the San Francisco Bay Area who is willing to travel to Bear Valley (about 3 hours away). And, what is a reasonable rate to pay for travel?
Thanks!

How much are most people paying or expecting to pay for their invitations? I am undecided as to how much I want to spend on my invitations since most people I know seem to just throw them away.

I have another question…I am thinking about using MyPublisher, Kodak, or one of the others to make a guest book using our e-pics. Any advice on which is easier for a Mac, and which is better/more inexpensive.
Thanks

Question for the hive: I am looking to order escort cards, menu cards and programs from one place. I want the escort cards to be envelopes with the guests name on the outside and the table number on a card on the inside. I would like the company to print the names and table numbers. Any suggestions?

Nancy — I used Jira at wowPretty for my wedding and was extremely pleased with the end result. She charged me a $40 travel fee to San Leandro (she’s based in San Mateo), so she’d probably charge you something similar unless you go with a large bride + attendants package.

Rehearsal dinner dilemma: My fiance is from Ireland, my family is cattered in this country and we’re marrying in NY. We had plans for wedding party + somewhat extended family for the rehearsal dinner (~ 60 people which feels too big already) but my mom just called wondering if they can contribute money to what my fiance’s parents are paying for so we can invite their out of town guests. This owuld mean switching venues since we’re at the max already - and a decision to invite/not invite over 40 others from farther away than her friends, leaving only 20 people at the wedding who were not at the rehearsal dinner. What do we do?!

Does anyone know any good websites on European travel guide? I am trying to plan my honeymoon and am very confused @_@ I can’t decide on a country or multiple countries…There should be a easier way to find out what’s good and what’s not…like a weddingbee for traveling purpose!

Invitations–I found mine at a lovely shop in Seattle called Mmm… Paper. Michelle is wonderful–and we did everything via mail and online. My invites (invitation, envelop, rsvp + envelope, and reception card were $3.25 a piece). Quality work, plus you support a female owned & operated business. LOVE LOVE LOVE them!

KARA:

We are in a similar situation. 99% of our guests will be coming from out of town and we want a small rehearsal dinner. What we decided to do is limit the rehearsal dinner to our parents, grandparents and wedding party (w/ guests) ONLY. After the rehearsal dinner we are going to have a “non-hosted” event. Basically we are going to pick a meeting spot (in a different location than where we are hosting our rehearsal dinner) for people to gather and mingle if they want to. After the rehearsal dinner, FI and I will stop by. That way there is a clear distinction as to who is invited to the rehearsal dinner (with no hard feelings b/c the limits are reasonable) but our OOT guests will be accommodated as well. In addition to keeping our rehearsal dinner small while still making all of our guests feel included, I like that this arrangement is more casual and gives our guests an option. I know that after a long day of traveling I sometimes don’t feel up to going out at night, however if I were invited to a rehearsal dinner I would feel obligated to go. This gives guests flexibility; they can say for as long or short as they like, or not come at all. We will notify guests in their OOT bags. Hope this helps!
