Flower Girl Baskets

May 21st, 2007 @ 8:24 am by Mrs. Blueberry

The last of my DIYs from this last trip to KC: Flower girl baskets.

Materials:
4 wicker baskets from Michaels: $1.99 apiece, ~ $8.00 total
spray paint primer from Ace Hardware: $3.00
ivory spray paint from Ace Hardware: $3.00
1 bunch of flowers from Michaels: $4.99 on clearance for $1.00
1 spool of ribbon from Michaels: about $2.50, I think?
Total price: $17.50, or just over $4.00 per basket

I didn’t take any pictures of myself priming and spray painting the baskets, but I’m sure you all know what that looks like (the only notable thing is that since i neglected to bring any of my grody work clothes to KC, I ended up wearing a pair of Mr. Blueberry’s boxers and a XL blood drive t-shirt to paint in). smiley502 Hmm, maybe that’s why I didn’t take any pictures! lol

What I did was remove sprigs from the bunch of flowers (since they’re silk, the sprigs just pop off). I bound two together with scraps of ivory ribbon left over from another project:

…then glued them into place inside each ‘handle side’ of each basket:

Then, because I’m still a bowmaking idiot (and I tried! I really did!), I used ribbon to tie two shoelace-style bows, stacked right on top of each other, on each side of the basket handle:

Finished products!

Total time? 20 minutes to prime and paint, dry time, then maybe 45 minutes to wrap, glue, and ‘bow’.

Very pretty! And so much cheaper than the premade ones–it amazes me that so many of them, even the new ones at Target, are $35 and up.

My flowergirl basket came from Michael’s too, but it was already an off-white color. It’s a small metal Easter basket with yellow flowers, so it went with my color scheme. I wove yellow ribbon through the slots so the petals wont fall out, tied it in bows, and attached some vintage ribbon flowers I got at Tinsel Trading. It’s dangerous having Tinsel Trading and M&J Trim a five minute walk from Penn Station, where I commute. ;)
