Rehearsal Dinner Ideas

May 21st, 2007 @ 6:21 pm by Mrs. Bell Pepper

Today I started working on the details of our rehearsal dinner. We will be having our dinner at a Vietnamese restaurant which has a beautiful banquet room on the second floor. The food is great at this restaurant, but the thing that really sold us was the lovely ambience. I’m delighted that we can use candlelight (unlike our wedding reception venue) and we can pretty much do whatever we want for decor. The banquet room already has a warm glow so I want to try a bolder color scheme: something like orange, magenta, and pink. I love Martha Stewart’s idea with the tissue paper decor and she gives a good example what I might want to achieve for our rehearsal dinner:

I bought some tissue paper from Target and Michael’s and several vases from IKEA. I thought just placing the tissue paper was too plain, so I added some leftover lace to each vase/candleholder. Here’s what it looks like with the lace:

Very cute indeed! I think I I’ll keep this idea! I placed two small votives in each vase, perhaps I should use a larger votive?

For the floral arrangements, I wanted opaque gold containers such as ones from Jamali Garden:

These vases are perfect for our rehearsal dinner, but I have to admit they are kind of expensive. I only needed a few (about five or six vases), and I thought I could create a similar design by spray painting vases with gold paint.

I coated several cube vases and then I added a $3 vase I bought from Michael’s.

They look great but there is one problem with the gold paint, it tends to scratch off easily so you need to be very careful handling them. I tried double and triple coating these vases and they still scratched off. The best thing to do is avoid anything from touching the sides of these vases when transporting them.

We still have to figure out what kind of flowers to use for the dinner. Roses? Ranunculus? Peonies? One flower that I rarely see at weddings but I love so much are dahlias…Too bad they are not in season around our wedding date. Any other flower ideas?

The vases look great! How did you secure the tissue paper and lace to the vase? Double-sided tape?

I used double stick tape. You know, it’s funny because the lace is a little sticky because of the tape but it seems to work the best. I tried glue, xyron stuff and it was a mess!

I think I figured out the vases on how to prevent them from scratching. I bought a gloss finish spray and it may do the trick. I think hair spray also works well too.

The spray paint is a great way to make a bunch of miscellaneous cheap/free vases look coordinated, plus have variation in the size and shape.

The new Martha Stewart Crafts line actually sells kits of those paper puffs now. The paper flowers, too. Good thing they weren’t in my colors, I was very tempted and I have no time or ambition for another project!

I love the lace candleholders! Did you cut the tissue paper to line up perfectly with the top edge of the vases, or is the tissue folded into the inside of the vase? It looks so clean, but if I do something like this, I’m not sure that I’d have the patience to cut the tissue all so perfectly!

Double-sided tape is my favorite thing.

Brooke,

I measured the vases so that the tissue paper lined up with the top edges. You can tape remaining tissue paper on the bottom of the vases but it won’t look as neat.

Now we’re supposed to decorate our rehearsal dinners too? This is just too much to think about!

metallic wedding portraits

You’re very creative! The lace looked perfect in those boxes! And the metallic hue of the rest of your decors is amazing! Although there’s a little contrast between the gentle lacey decors and lamps and the metallic vases I can still sense a deep feeling of continuity in everything. One problem though - having those beautiful decors will really call for a touch there and praises here. So, expect some scratches on your hand made decors after the whole thing is over. If I were there, I’ll ask for one of the lacey boxes.
