At least in NY, the general ring rule is: you call it off, you lose the ring; he calls it off, you can keep it.

I’m pretty torn about that engagement ring article. I mean — is it or itsn’t it a gift? The idea that it’s a gift with a contigency — that you marry the giver — seems really, really creepy to me. I don’t give people birthday presents contigent on their spending their birthdays with me! But then again, I wouldn’t have the ring if my boyfriend hadn’t proposed; the ring is a symbol of the fact that we want to get married.

I’m really curious to hear if anyone else has thoughts about this.

Gifts with contigencies are not really gifts. i was torn by that article too.
