I Feel Like A Fat Ass

May 22nd, 2007 @ 2:24 pm by Mrs. Apple

Only five days left until my wedding and all I can think about is how bloated I feel. My stomach looks bigger than normal and I feel my chin doubling up. Any thoughts ladies? It’s not that time of the month or even close to it. I haven’t been eating more or less than normal. I haven’t stepped on the treadmill for over a week now so that could be the culprit. Though I did lift some weights yesterday just so I wouldn’t feel 100% guilty.

Mr. Apple suggested not eating the rest of the week. I think he was half kidding half truthful. argh! happy01 Besides I love food too much to even think about doing something that outrageous. Maybe I should hit up the gym tomorrow and burn some calories but damn….I’m only one week away from my wedding date. It’s not like I’m going to look any skinnier by burning a couple hundred calories?! I am one lazy mofo.

I hope I can fit into my dress. It’s hanging up in the guest room closet and I’m scared ladies…real scared to even put one foot in.

Maybe I should drink cabbage soup for 5 days or eat some rabbit food like steamed broccoli with oil and vinegar, yumm….my tummy is growling already.

Any suggestions on getting rid of this feeling?

Drink water! Lots of water. It might make you feel more bloated for a day but it will help flush anything out of your system. Also if you are retaining fluid due to stress this will help keep your skin clear. HYDRATE!!!

Also, try taking some midol or bloating medicine… Even though it isn’t that time of the month, it might help out.

Avoid salt & sodium- especially diet soft drinks. You might just be retaining water.

Don’t eat like a rabbit or there’s a good chance your wedding memories will be marred by diet related bitchiness, headaches and dizzyness.

For what it’s worth, it might be a recent dietary change (eating more fiber than usual, sodium, lots of veggies etc.) that is making you feel bloaty (happens to me too. ; ) so maybe avoid some of those particular foods for a little while. I’m sure it different foods affect everyone a little differently but common ones are cabbage, broccoli, beans, etc. Any quick google search on foods that cause bloat.

HTH!

First of all, I would try on the dress! The two outcomes of that are - you are either stressing yourself out for nothing because it still fits, or you have five days to fix it (you or the dress, either way). Then do everything everybody above says.

Also (and sorry for the TMI) I sometimes feel bloated because of gas when I’m stressed, not water and then I burp for a whole day - so you could try an over the counter gas relief like Gas-X or something. It really couldn’t hurt.

BTW I mean the above comment in terms of general digestion (some people have IBS or just get, um, gassy O_o) and not as a dieting thing (since most the foods on those foods-that-cause-bloat lists are good for you.)

eat a good amount of watermelon over an hour or two (go to the market and get a plastic tub of the pre-cut pieces) and drink lots of water. Don’t eat anything else while you’re doing it. It works as a natural diuretic so it might give you a jumpstart. After that stay away from the salt and the alcohol.

You could also buy some acidpohilus or something - if it feels like more than just water retention. Culturelle is widely available at drugstores.

Also, I find that if I drink even one alcoholic drink, I wake up a little bloated (you can tell instantly in my ankles) the next day. If I skip the drink it really makes a difference.

Good luck!

1. South Beach Diet
2. No sodium! It’s hidden in diet soda (as ms. mouse says above), cheese, processed foods, deli meat, tons in soy sauce, etc. When my sister was pregnant she was very bloated and had edema; the doctor had her kill sodium and she peed out tons of excess water.
3. Water galore
4. Exercise (sweat it out!)
5. If your feet/legs swell, elevate them above your the level of your heart

Stay away from foods that traditionally cause bloating and gas. Broccoli is one of them. The Beano enzyme supplement has a list of “Beano foods” that may cause gas and bloating in people. I agree with the other commenters who say stay away from salt and alcohol. You may want to try some of the yogurts marketed to improve digestive health like Dannon’s Activia.
The watermelon tip is good… don’t overdo drinking water though. You don’t want to throw your electrolytes out of balance.

Drink lots of water to flush out your system (ironically, the more you drink, the less you retain), avoid sodium which causes water retention, and avoid broccoli as well which can cause bloating. I’d suggest that part of it is also mental - when you feel like you’ve been lazy or eating too much or anything like that, you tend to FEEL heavier so I think maybe it would help clear your head and make you feel better to go for a walk or hit the gym. And eat lots of fruit and salads - in addition to it being good for me, it always just makes me feel lighter and healthier when I eat those things!

Oh yeah and try on the dress - good suggestion!

Drink plenty of water and the best solution try to steam chicken with ginger. Just use ginger on all your meat that your cooking with. It helps a lot! I lost about 5 - 10 pounds after when my daughter was first born. I was even lighter than my original weight when I wasn’t pregnant. Hope this helps!

I think it’s a case of pre-wedding jitters. It’s probably not as bad as you think, but it may be a good idea to try on the dress…it might avoid any unnecessary stress and last minute freak out sessions.

Smile and laugh it burns calories! =)

cut out salt, dairy, starches and sugar… you’ll feel tremendously better, your skin will look good, and you will lose the bloat in 3 days. Good luck!

Take a deep breath and try the dress on. The good news is that you’re very unlikely to GAIN anything in the next five days, so you can eat normally. :-)

it’s probably from stress & excitement. and if it is, then RELAX! i felt the same way you did. it was very weird for me because i actually lost a lot of weight during the 6 months planning and just a week or two beforehand i felt like i was gaining the weight back. now i’m not sure if i was or not, but i wasn’t doing anything different in terms of diet or exercise. so i figured it was stress and excitement. i decided to get a facial the week of my wedding. a very basic one [to avoid any possible skin irritations] and it was a great idea. my facialist gives an awesome massage and i felt a lot better afterwards.

do something to help you relax. yes, the nerves may or may not be completely calmed. but doing something that will make you feel good about yourself will help lighten you up. no pun intendeded. ;P

get a prescription water pill from your doctor–the OTC ones sometimes make it worse!

South Beach works like a charm, but will make you bitchy—

1. Keep drinking water! As a pp said, drinking more water helps you retain less.

2. Eating fiber rich foods can help your digestive health.

3. Avoid sodas (even diet) and cut out juices (sugar) if you drink them.

4. Eat light dairy because dairy can cause bloating.

5. Don’t lift weights! Weightlifting causes your muscles to retain water as they rebuild and repair themselves, which can lead to an overall feeling of being heavier by up to several pounds (more when you work out larger muscle groups). The only thing that helps this is time and lots of water! If you want to exercise, stick to cardio (and lots of water) which will be more slimming.

Helloooo Barbara!!! :)

I have so much to share w/ you, but for now… I got bloated too. I really think it’s pre-wedding jitters. My best advice? Breathe in deeply and relax; spend some time alone before the big day to just reflect and revel in having found someone you love and who loves you. Honestly, no matter WHAT, a bride is always the most beautiful woman on her wedding day. The happiness in your face is really what makes the difference. If you can, try to stop worrying about everything being “perfect” and just enjoy the fact that you’re getting MARRRRIED!!! :) Much love and best wishes!!

Drink lemon water. Keep it in your fridge (cut up a few lemons, drop them in a pitcher of water, and let it *marinate* in the fridge so that you always have some handy. Down TONS of it. Lemons and water are natural diuretics and are used to combat bloat. Trust me, it works.

Don’t drink too much water, it’s unnecessary and you’ll gain weight.

I know this stuff isnt the healthiest but I have used it a few times to drop a bit of water weight (the bloating you are feeling)- The celebrity/Hollywood diet drink? It works wonders for just one day but the side effect is living in the bathroom those because of the amount of water you lose specially if you drink the recommended 8 glasses of water.

Other alternative is hit the treadmill for a few days up to the wedding and stick stricktly to lower/non carb foods such as fresh veggies and protein (meats and fish). Go crazy on those all you want. I notice an immediate difference in my wellbeing and its my non-diet diet to lose weight for my wedding -10 lbs so far!! Midol is also great as advised by a previous blogger.
