All Your Somethings

May 23rd, 2007 @ 12:57 pm by Mrs. Bluebell

Miss Pumpkin’s post about Gabby’s Something New got me thinking….let’s all say our something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue’s! (except Mrs. Bee who commented that she didn’t have them!)

Mine are:

  • Something Old: Antique diamond necklace & pin that belonged to my great great grandmother in the 1870s
  • Something New: Dress (sorry Gabby!) and veil…probably other random things too.
  • Something Borrowed: The antique necklace & pin (co-owned by my mom and her three sisters)
  • Something Blue: Either a sapphire pin or ring (both family heirlooms) that I’ll tie onto my bouquet. Oh, and my bouquet itself will be mostly blue. Aaand I’ll probably wear blue underwear because, why not? happy07

I don’t care that much about the tradition and I’m not superstitious, but this is just such an easy one to do, that I decided I like it and want to play along!

So, are you getting all the Somethings, or not? What are yours?

Old - either my mom’s garter (is it ok to use something from a marriage that has ended?) or my grandmother’s blue hair pin.

New - dress, shoes, bracelet I got for my birthday from FILs (how long do I have before it becomes something old?)

Borrowed - my FSILs veil and tiara

Blue - either my mom’s garter or my grandmother’s blue hair pin.

Something Old and Something Borrowed: Gold wedding ring that belonged to FI’s great great grandmother; it is over 100 years old and has been worn by each girl to get married in the family; it will be tied to my bouquet
Something New: Dress, veil, shoes
Something Blue: blue topaz ring that FI bought me for our 6 month anniversary that I have worn since

I just don’t understand the significance of the whole “somethings” tradition so I’m gonna pass on it.

I am still working on it but I think this will be how it goes:

Something old - pearl necklace from my Momma. It isn’t an antique or anything but it is older than anything I have so I think it counts.

Something new - dress, shoes, underwear, etc… this one will be easy I think :)

Something borrowed - my veil I think. My cousin lent me hers and it is the right style & colour but I might still look around

Something blue - also easy, my Chicago Bears garter for Mr. Pumpkin and my blue crystals with our initials on the bottom of my shoes!

I am not superstitious either but this one is so fun and easy so I will do it if I can. My problem spot will be the borrowed item if I find a new veil.

have you heard that the old tradition actually goes something like this?:
something old, something new
something borrowed, something blue…
and a sixpence in her shoe

i wonder how the sixpence got dropped =P

Christening bonnet! I had one of those that became a hankie when you cut two stitches…I wonder where that got to…that’d be ideal.

I’m struggling for a “something borrowed,” because it’s just plain old not in my nature to borrow stuff from people. A bridesmaid offered her grandmother’s star saphire as a handy combo borrowed/blue, and I might run with that.

Oh, and flip flop girl, virtually any wedding website or catalog will happily sell you a sixpence…for $25.

I’m doing them! I too thought they were really simple, so why not?

Something Old: The sixpence from my mother’s wedding shoe
Something New: Pearl and diamond necklace from my parents
Something Borrowed: My grandmother’s pearl bracelet
Something Blue: Shoe crystals and underwear

And, yes, I’m doing the sixpence part, too.

Ok.. hopefully the server lets me do this (my 2nd attempt so hopefully it’s not a repeat)!

Something old: My engagement ring. It’s my FI’s Nana’s ring. It was a cocktail ring her late husband had surprised her with even though she had told him it was too expensive when they saw it in an antique store earlier that day. She brags to everyone she knows that my ring was hers. I’m so happy that she loves me and trusts me enough to give it on over. I absolutely adore her as well as the ring- I love that it’s so different!

Something new: My gown

Something borrowed: My Winters and Rain headpiece from my sister’s SIL. I loved it on her at her wedding so she said I could borrow it. She’s the sweetest!

Something blue: I lamented over this for awhile but ultimately decided to put a picture of my FI as a child in a locket and attach it with a blue ribbon around the stems of my bouquet. He has the bluest eyes you’ve ever seen!

Old: I have a fleur d’ lis locket that my grampa gave my mom, who gave it to me when I pledged Kappa 13 years ago (GASP!)… will probably put a photo of my grampa in there and attach it some how to my dress or flowers.

New: Undecided at this point…

Borrowed: Mom’s pearl drop earings

Blue: imsohappythatiama…

Old - earrings that were made from two links of a diamond bracelet that belonged to my grandmother

New - dress

Borrowed - earrings (that are old) borrowed from my mom

Blue - panties!

Sixpence - wouldn’t go in my shoe so I hot glued it to the bottom of one she and glued a quartered from the year of my parents’ wedding year on the other shoe

My blue thing was my favorite… I got an aquamarine ring, which is the stone for March, which is the month we got married. I wear it now on my right hand and would put it on my left when I get to my rotations in vet school, just to keep the real thing safe.

I’ve combined some:

Something old, borrowed, blue: a bracelet that was given to my great great grandma by her betrothed when she was 18. The women in my family have all worn it.

Something new: dress, veil, shoes…all of it

The other “Something blue” is this beautiful “V” lace applique with a blue ribbon that my bridal salon sewed into the hem of my skirt :)
