About Mrs. Pumpkin

I have been stressing about our two big moves and changing our address for about a month now. I had made a huge long list of everyone we would need to notify and I have slowly been changing our address to my parents. Since we are somewhat homeless for the next three months while our house is being built, I’m living with my parents. And as I blogged about earlier, Mr. Pumpkin is either living and working on the farm or is on the road with work. As I mentioned before, I am totally anal about my mail, so this has been such a weight on my shoulders–what if I miss someone? What if the new tenants of our apartment get my mail–can they use it to steal my identity? Etc…

After weeks of typing my new address into on-line customer service pages for everything we have mailed to us on a regular basis (it’s shocking how many services/company send us mail!), I finally went to the Canada Post website to do the final step: have our mail forwarded. I can’t say enough about how easy and surprisingly cheap it is to have your mail forwarded through their Smart Moves program! It took about 10 minutes for me to put in all of the info and verify that it is actually me doing this and then it only cost $36 for 6 months of mail forwarding! How great is that? It also had a nice checklist of things you should do when moving and the option to send an e-mail to all of your friends and family with your updated address. I’m sure the USPS has a similar (if not identical) service.

Whew! Weight is officially off the shoulders. Have you started preparations for your move, if you are in fact moving?

I just filed my first change of address yesterday with USPS (2nd to come in August), as I seem to do every year.
USPS forwards your mail free for a year and your magazines/catalogs for 60 days.

USPS forwarding is free and lasts 1 year.
Can do it online. Can also use the USPS.com website to hold mail (provide date range) — also free.

Wow, Canada charges you to forward your mail? The USPS will do it for a year for free. I only had to pay $1 to set it up online.

Wow, I’m glad I didn’t have to pay to have it changed. I was a bit miffed to see that USPS charges $1 to change it online, so I just went to the post office and got a packet thinger.
I made huge lists too, but had to call them all… what a pain!
Good luck with your move!

Being a college student and having lived in a different place every year for the last 5 years, I have forwarded my mail many times! I just filled out my info and sent it in the mail for the next big move. The only charge you might see from USPS is a $1 fee to your credit or debit card, which is simply to verify your identity if you complete and submit the form online. Or you can fill out the form online and print it to mail or give to your carrier.

I agree with Lydia, I can’t believe you get charged to forward your mail in Canada.

I would totally pay to get my mail forwarded if I got universal health care in return!

I hate Canada Post!! Those idiots continued to send some of my mail to the wrong address for more than 5 months, and they charged me $100 since I moved my business address and not just my residential one. HATE HATE HATE!
I have heard that their services are particularly bad in Toronto, so I’m sure everything will work out for you, Miss Pumpkin!
(And, to continue my rant, our healthcare system is only desirable if you have 6 months to a year to wait for a standard MRI or don’t mind sitting in an emergency waiting room for 11 hours in excrutiating pain. Okay, I’m done now!) ;-)
