Honey/Mini-Moon Travel Insurance

May 23rd, 2007 @ 11:59 am by Mrs. Pumpkin

I recently heard an incredibly sad and horrifying story about a young girl who went to Africa to volunteer in an clinic and contracted some sort of disease in her eyes. Within two days she was completely blind! It took five days to arrange a flight for her back to Canada where she had to have both corneas replaced. YIKES!!!

So, today I am researching Travel Insurance for our honeymoon.

I would like to ask any insurance agents out there if they could please make this process just a little bit easier. Good lord! No two companies use the same terms for anything so it is impossible to compare these products and they all seem grossly inadequate to me. Granted, I am looking for full eyeball protection after hearing that story, so my standards may be a smidge too high. But still, I’d like more than a five-day trip extension in the case of double dismemberment!

So far I think it will come down to CAA (Canadian Auto Association) and RBC (Royal Bank of Canada). They are the most comparable and seem the most comprehensive to me. At a cost of about $50 each, we will have emergency medical coverage, trip interruption/cancellation coverage, and baggage coverage (including travel documents and a 24-hour number to call for the 15 days that we will be away).

Have you purchased travel insurance for your honey or mini-moon? Did you find the process as frustrating as I am? Am I missing anything big in the coverage that I am looking at?

If you have an American Express card, look into their Global Travelshield Coverage. It’s great. For about $35 each, we are covered for everything: Medical expenses, trip delay, trip interruption/cancellation, baggage loss, and more. I found it to be a much better deal than going through travel agents and you can do everything online: booking it and getting your documents.

yes, i was going to recommend American Express also! My mother uses it every time she travels, just for peace of mind.

I recommend becoming a member of IAMAT (International Association for Medical Assistance to Travelers). Membership is free, but they accept donations. You receive a membership card, a directory of IAMAT approved physicians, and a traveller clinical record.
On of the benefits of an IAMAT approved physician is the preset fee schedule. No haggling or surprises.

ManicBride - good tip! Thanks :)

I looked into the AMEX coverage and it doesn’t include the same kind of trip interruption/cancelation coverage as the other two that I am looking at. I am still going to call them though because sometimes you can add on additional coverage for a small fee. I will let you all know what I find out! Thanks for all the advice.

hmmm...

hmm…no offense, but do you not travel often? it’s something to consider, but not worry about. as stated above look into amex. the chances of something tragic happening to you is slim. just think you can also die in a plane crash on your way to your honeymoon…

perhaps you should start drafting your will too.

FYI, if you are traveling to the UK they have free medical for everyone, even if you’re just visiting.

…at least that’s what my grandma (a frequent visiter to the UK) told me.

Lol hmmm! Thanks for keeping it all in perspective.

I do know that there are risks to everything but wouldn’t you rather be covered for the small price of $50 than leave it up to chance? Obviously I would, hence the post.

Despite my story and comments about worrying about my eyeballs my real concern is the other unforseen bumps in the road that might cause us to miss a flight or train and then have to pay outrageous fees to try to catch up with the rest of our scheduled events - that is why I am looking for something with the best trip cancellation/interruption coverage.

I’d keep the travel insurance portion seperate from the medical-only because a lot of those medical do not emergency transportation home. Anyway, this link refers to a company that a friend of mine has used and is using again this summer.

We bought insurance for the honeymoon as I’m chronically ill and there’s a real chance I might be too ill to go, or have to come home early. Which sucks, I had to do that once before–not because of the chronic illness, I caught some horrible stomach bug in Acapulco and had to go home. (Wasn’t Monteczuma’s Revenge, and I was *very* careful about not drinking the water/eating fruit/no ice/etc.)

Many (most?) Caribbean resorts have hurricane insurance, but it’s good to have insurance over and above that, as they’re often only good if a hurricane directly hits the island. Besides all the other things that could go wrong.

We have used RBC trip interruption/cancellation insurance for most of our trips that occur once or twice annually. This includes when we took all our kids and grandkids on vacations on at least three different occasions. This past year, was the firsdt time we submitted a claim, and RBC did everything to avoid a modest payout….the circumstances did not exactly fit their specific “categories”. You might also want to review Global’s news story at: http://www.canada.com/globaltv/ontario/story.html?id=4ab67506-6fc5-449f-9b01-3df49a6d1075 - 36k.

The test for any insurance is whether it pays out when needed. The “Peace of Mind” that we enjoyed was strictly in our mind…..no longer will we be taking interruption/cancellation insurance when we travel.
