Knowledge is (Flower) Power

May 23rd, 2007 @ 2:42 pm by Mrs. Lovebug

I don’t know about anyone else, but part of my befuddlement about what flowers to use for our wedding stems from my utter ignorance as to what’s available when. And yes that pun was intentional. :)

If I lived one state over, I’d have this problem solved by the Californa Cut Flowers Association, who have a handy-dandy seasonal availability database. You can search by flower or by month (or even multiple months), and most listings provide the origin, vase life, care & handling, and even design uses for the bloom–as well a photo of the flower and the colors in which it’s available.

There are also some handy links for any DIY brides: the Los Angeles Flower Market and the San Francisco Flower Market (with a comprehensive address book of local vendors).

But even if you’re not a California girl, the very comprehensive database is useful for getting the basics on everything from Acacias to Zinnias.

(Kangaroo Paw, available year round in CA. Aussie available in yellowish-green, green, brownish-yellow, and pink.)

Ha! I could’ve used something like that. I chose green hydrangeas for my June Cape Cod wedding because, like, they totally are the, like epitome of the ultimate Cape Cod summer experience and stuff, you know? Yeah, except they won’t be in bloom until 6-8 weeks after the wedding.

Sarah: awesome. You should have seen my florist’s face when I told her I wanted Lily of the Valley. She asked if I was aware that we live in a desert.

Miss lovebug: My florist told me the exact same thing when I told him I would like a flower placed in every napkin for our outdoor reception :)

lol…you can have ornamental onions in your flower arrangement. They’re available year around.
