Scent Your Wedding

May 24th, 2007 @ 2:43 pm by Mrs. Bee

Los Angeles based Scent Events specializes in adding custom scents to your event such as Cosmopolitan for your cocktail hour, Lavender for your reception, Wedding Cake for your dessert hour, and more. Starting at $300, each small scent player can permeate areas up to 2000 square feet.

Celebrity wedding planner Sasha Souza produced one reception where she divided a room into four seasons each with its own scent - honeysuckle for spring, citrus for summer, leave for fall, berries for winter. (via modernbride magazine) They say that smell is the most powerful sense when it comes to evoking memories so I can see how this might add that little special something.

Is this something you’d consider for your wedding?

Nope, I would never even think about this - there are other areas where I would rather spend my money.

To each their own of course but I think this is the perfect example of wedding industry excess. Mr. Bee was right in his earlier post…it’s not all the things that make a wedding special. Whatever happend to flowers scenting your wedding?

What a horrible idea… Be considerate of your guests with allergies or a sensitive olfactory system.

TORTURE!!! The scent of regular wedding flowers and candles and all the ladies’ perfumes would be too much for most allergic people.

ridiculous. i’d rather gather $300 in a pile, set fire to that and sniff the smoke.

Good heavens this is the most ridiculous example of a frivolous wedding expense I’ve ever heard of. And I’ve heard of some crazy ones.

Anyone wondering if they’re just Glade plug-ins in a fancy box?

I don’t like much synthetic scent and I’d worry about guest with chemical sensitivity.

Use real, fresh flowers. Those actually smell good.

I’ve always heard that you shouldn’t use scented candles at dinner because the scents interfere with your eating experience…

For the love of Pete!! ANOTHER unnecessary thing to spend money on? Heck no, I would never think to do this! Besides the sheer ridiculous-ness of this, my mom, matron of honor and I would all end up writing in pain from scent-induced migranes. So, ummm, no, I won’t be having this.

i figured most people would react negatively (i’m very sensitive to scent myself)… but thought it would be interesting to write about. ;)

BTW, I would be *writhing* in pain, not writing. Writing is fun. Writhing is not.

And Mrs. Bee, even though there are mostly (all?) negative comments to this, it’s interesting to read about. It has sparked comments, and that’s always fun. :)

Awesome! It’s like a guaranteed headache before you drink anything!

Now in Smell-O-Vision!

Yeah, I’d take the cash, too.

I sort of like the idea in theory — walking into a room that smells like baking bread is the yummiest thing. But in practice… not so much. My grandma would die from a headache, and she’s probably not the only one on my guest list who would. Plus, that’s $300 that I can’t spend on my honeymoon, you know?

scenting a room? eeh, not so much. i’m borderline sensitive to some scents so i would definitely not be doing this.

Mary - you are so right. I’m currently reading Fast Food Nation and there’s a whole part about how the writer went to a plant where they “manufacture taste.” It’s really very similar to working in a perfumery, because most of what you are tasting is being brought in through your nose (for those wondering, people who like foods that stink have just gotten used to it, or have learned to ignore it!)
