Another Event To Plan!

May 25th, 2007 @ 3:29 pm by Mrs. Emerald

Much to my surprise, we are now hosting a day-after breakfast/brunch! Well, “we” meaning my parents are footing the bill. Since we’re having a lot of out-of-town relatives coming in for the wedding (35 or so), my parents want to get everyone together before they head back from where they came from. Initially, my brilliant idea was to host it at the hotel where they can reserve a private room for us and set up a nice, simple breakfast buffet. That way, people can come and go as they please, and most of the guests are staying at the hotel anyways (only a few are staying at my parents’ house). Doesn’t that sound nice and trouble-free?

But noooo, apparently now my parents want to host a freakin’ catered breakfast/brunch at our HOUSE!! Aghh, that seems like more work…cleaning the house, finding a caterer who can do a good breakfast, having them come and do all the setup, etc…for 40-some people!! Craziness…I guess their main reasoning is that since all these people are coming here for US, we need to show them some hospitality by inviting them into our home at some point during the weekend. I guess I can see their point, but… dang, I don’t have time to find a caterer!! Help…confuse

convince the padres it would be way more convenient FOR THE GUESTS if you hosted the breakfast at the hotel. 1 point of argument = the guests would have to arrange for transportation to the house and find a way back after the breakfast etc.

very good point, tto. if not at the hotel, then how about a resturant within walking distance of the hotel if they want something different? hosting the day after sounds like too much work! ugh, poor miss E. good luck w/ this one.

I can understand your parents’ “hospitality” angle about hosting at your house. Is this something that you can hand off to a family friend or relative? Maybe even your parents?

It’s probably an Asian thing. My Indian parents were very troubled when they realized none of our wedding weekend events involved welcoming all of our guests into our home. They insisted on creating an event just for that.

If you have a Whole Foods in your area, they have great breakfast platters.

Depends how fancy you want it. We did a day-after open-house style brunch at the ‘rents house with costco platters and party finger food (mimosas, too) and had a blast. Very low maintenance. There are undoubtedly a few aunt/cousin types who volunteer to lend a hand setting up in the morning.

Hire a cleaning service. Best $95 I ever spent.

I agree, as someone who has been an out of town guest for many a wedding I would try to convince you that when people are packing and preparing for a trip home they will be less happy about leaving the hotel to find your folks’ place and then go back to check out or something. They came out of their way already for the big event, don’t make them drive around again. I vote for the brunch/breakfast at the hotel. Plus adding that list of stresses of a home-event doesn’t seem like a healthy thing. Make life simpler.

In our case, the folks house was en route to the airport and major highways, so everyone checked out of their hotels late morning, and got headed in the right direction, making a pit stop at the parents’ house to eat and visit before hitting the road for home. Family would’ve been coming over ANYWAY so it basically saved my mom the uncertainty of being expected to serve a bunch of meals at weird times to lots of relatives all day. It really encouraged the relatives to come eat during that 4-hour window, with just a few special cases who stayed beyond that.

We’re having a home wedding, so a home brunch isn’t going to crimp the hosts’ style that much, but I really really hope people have been paying attention when I tell them that a charity 10K race is passing the brunch site. I mean, directly passing. Road closures, the whole bit. Brunch starts at 10, and if people are still there at 12 (my side won’t be, but his probably will), they’ll be trapped indefinitely. And I will laugh, and I will dance around singing “I told you so.”
