A Phonograph Wedding

May 29th, 2007 @ 9:31 am by Mrs. Lovebug

Something fun for lovers of all things vintage: a downloadable, original phonograph recording of Mendelssohn’s Wedding March, recorded in 1909. It has all that wonderful, grainy static–what a twist to play it at a modern wedding.

In fact, I love the idea of having and using a real phonograph at a wedding; an old record would sound especially cool for something like the garter dance/toss. Not to mention what a beautiful addition it would be to the decor (I love mixing modern and antique furnishings.) Surprisingly, I found a few models on eBay going for a few hundred dollars or less.

But if you’re not into investing in the whole antique shebang, the horns are a kick in themselves–perfectly faded and charming, they can be found on eBay for less than $50:

There’s this gorgeous old grand piano in the reception room of our venue, and I think one of these could be really cool propped on top, spilling out flowers, or even old-fashioned candies.

What a cool idea. It would kind of add like a 1930s French vintage feel to your wedding. Lovely :)

What a great idea! Perhaps you could pair the phonograph horns with other dilapidated musical instruments. (I bet you could find or borrow distressed instruments or parts from musical instrument repair shops or even thrift stores.)

I have a grainy static mp3 of Dooley Wilson singing “As Time Goes By.” It’s great.
I’m a big fan of classical recordings on vinyl as well. There is a depth with vinyl recordings that I think is lost in the hyper-post-production that tends to happen on modern CD recordings.

This is really funny, because I had been thinking about doing the same thing. I actually requested an image of a phonograph for my RSVP cards. I got the idea from an old photograph. From what I can see in the proof, it turned out really cute!

My neice sent me this string. SHE’s the one getting married. I collect these kinds of old phonographs and especially the images. I’d love it if you could send me a proof of your RSVP card Shelle23. Or anyone else who has images. There are lots of MP3s of old recordings out there.

BTW, re: Cheap orig phonograph horns are not under $50.00 they are hundred’s of dollars! But there are junky Indian imports that look like old but aren’t.

Anyway, if anone else has phonograph images on their invitations or as part of their theme, please let me know. You can email me at at StevenrammATAOLDOTCOM
