Battle of the Lipcolors

May 29th, 2007 @ 4:51 pm by Mrs. Emerald

I hardly EVER wear lipstick. And even though I love lip gloss, I generally forget to put it on. BUT, on my wedding day, I want gorgeous, peachy-pink, shiny lips. However, regular lipstick topped off with regular gloss is out of the question. The other night, the amazing makeup artist I met at Macy’s Bobbi Brown counter applied some Rum Raisin lipstick on me, and while the color was perfect, it smudged on everything!! I don’t want to get anywhere near Mr.E’s ivory shirt with lipstick on. So now the search is on for a longwear lipcolor/gloss. Here is what I’ve come up with. And as usual, I’d love your input on your favorites!!

a) Revlon ColorStay - one end is a long-lasting lipcolor (up to 12 hours they say), and the other end is a moisturizing gloss. Price: Under $10

b) Cover Girl Outlast lipcolor - Same idea as the Revlon, but CG’s packaging does not appeal to me (yea, I’m a sucker for nice packaging). Price: Under $10

c) Vincent Longo’s Pealessence Gel Stain - Touted to be sip, swim and sweat resistant. Price: $22.50!

d) Tarte’s Rise & Shine Plumping Lip Stain - I love the idea of a lip “stain” for sheer long-lasting color, and the other end is a plumping lip gloss. Price: $21!!

There are a ton more similar products on Sephora.com, but you get the idea… I do use Benefit’s Benetint regularly on my cheeks (love it!), but I don’t find the color to be all that noticeable on my lips.

My 2 cents: I love the Vincent Longo stains. They DO wear all day… but tend to be a bit BRIGHTER of a color than what they look like in the bottle.

I’m going to go out of the box on this and recommend the MAC longwear lipcolors. I have had super good luck with long wear time, great colors (can have clear overgloss or sparkle), and applies beautifully. I have worn their lipcolors all day, and it stands up to eating, drinking, lots of smooching (!), and it’s pretty reasonably priced.

You get what you pay for and if it’s good quality, you only need a little to last a long time. I think for something chemical (sounds icky, no?) that you put on your face, if you can afford to, you should pay for quality. :D And you ARE the bride right?

I use the Cover Girl stuff for daily wear. It won’t smudge off on shirts or clothing, but it does come off the inner parts of your lip when you eat, especially if it’s anything greasy. Get the lipliner too, you’ll want it. I use “nude” as a basic all-purpose peachy pink neutral.

I use the Maybelline version of the Revlon stuff everyday (http://tinyurl.com/yr25r4)! I wore it at my wedding and did one touch up after our reception before our formal photographs. It always makes it through the work day. Be careful, though….it’s more of a lip stain and will soak into your skin so you have to be very precise with where you put it. A little practice makes perfect!

I’m throwing in an outside vote for the MAC longwear, too. I bought this to wear for our wedding after FSIL told me to try hers…and the color was still there after a whole day of eating/drinking/whatnot. I did another test drive a few weeks ago and it lasted all day (I applied in the morning). There was still a bit of color left the next day! I wouldn’t wear it daily, but I think it’s perfect for a wedding day with little to no touchups needed.

I tried the CoverGirl one back in the day, and it REALLY dried out my lips, even with the moisture thingie. My friend wears it daily, though, and loves it.

I’ve tried the Revlon one and the color part tends to dry up and get crumbly under the gloss side so it looks like you have colored crumbly lips. I went to Neiman Marcus to have my makeup done and they colored in my lips with a liner that I liked and applied clear gloss over top. It looks so nice and soft, plus I can redo myself if I need to.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Revlon Color Stay.
I used it for my wedding after trying Clinique’s similar product (I use Clinique foundation, Lancome Mascara, Nars blush, etc.) ANYWAY!!! It will get crumbly if you put on too much of the color first then the gloss. My advice buy it and practice before. If you put on a nice then coat it will last for hours with. Good luck! My favorite color btw is Sheer Champagne.

Hiya I vote for MAC and Vincent Longo. I worked for ULTA and I know how great VL is. MAC is awesome either so either one you pick darling would be a great choice. If you want a darker tint reapply it once the first coat is dry. Thats what works for me at least. I use a semi permanent lip ink so mine lasts for about well until I take it off with the special liquid it comes with (its called lip ink google it)

I use both the Cover Girl and Vincent Longo. I find that the Cover Girl one is much easier to apply but me lips get extermely dry and I have to use the moisturizer one all day. The Longo one is really a stain so it takes some practice to apply but the color really lasts and and lipbalm or lipgloss on top works great.

I used the Revlon one not long ago and I applied it in the afternoon and it stayed on well throughout the night. It was tricky to get used to, though since it does, as mentioned, get crumbly. It felt like paint when I put too much on.
I’ve tried the Cover Girl version too and liked it much better, less of a paint feeling, but I had to be super careful when I ate.
Once when I got my makeup done at a counter, the woman told me that the secret to any longwear lipstick like these is to make sure the color part is completely, 100% dried before you put on the gloss.

I have tried both Revlon and Cover Girl and I must see Revlon is wayyy better. CG smells too much like chemical and it dries my lips after just 1 hr. CG DOES NOT last all day. People here are suggesting the MAC long wear lipcolor so I will try that too. You should go to the MAC counter and ask to try that lipstick then walk around the mall for 2-3 hrs to see if it’ll last.

I think its MAC and Vincent Longo IMO. I have used both but I use the semi permanent stuff by Lip Ink

I love the Chanel glossimer in Spark. It’s not a long last lip color but I think it lasts fairly long and even if it kisses off on him a bit, the color is so light (although it looks really dark in the package) that he doesn’t notice or look like he is wearing my lipgloss.

I usually use it over the Clinique long wear lip stuff in Real Raspberry or Nude Glisten - depending on if I’m going for more of a pink or nude color.

I also recommend the MAC longwear. There’s two types: lipcolours and lustres. Avoid the lustres unless you want a really shinny pout.

I haven’t tried the others, but I would recommend NOT using CoverGirl– as others have said, it does not last all day. I wore it to one of my high school proms, and my mouth was so dry; by the end of the prom (dinner and lots of talking) so much of the lipstick had worn off that it just looked like I had on lipliner.
