About Mrs. Lovebug

Here Comes The Widget

May 30th, 2007 @ 2:26 pm by Mrs. Lovebug

I’m a die-hard Mac girl. Having to do my Weddingbee work on Mr. Lovebug’s PC is warping my personality, I’m sure of it. The phrase “The depths of my hatred for Microsoft can never be plumbed” goes through my head several times a day.

As therapy, I like to lose myself for a while in one of my favorite Apple orchards: Dashboard Widgets. On my last visit, I harvested a handful or two that I thought might be handy for my fellow Apple-savvy brides:

Percount: a small and tidy countdown you can personalize with the date, a title, and any picture you like. Countdown to the wedding, the honeymoon, or the day your dress arrives.

Deilivery Status: speaking of deliveries, this widget lets you track packages from the USPS, UPS, FedEx, DHL, and more. Just enter your order or tracking number into the widget, and it’ll update the package’s status automatically and give a countdown till delivery.

Flickrframe: enter a Flickr username into this widget and it’ll stream photos from that account into a neat little frame of your choosing, perusable all the day long from your desktop.

Flick’it: drop and drag images from iPhoto or your Finder into this widget; it automatically resizes them and feeds them to your Flickr account.

Remember The Milk: a cute, simple to-do list widget (nothing like the satisfaction of checking the “done” box!)

Google Calendar: keep track of appointments, events, due-dates, etc. from your Google account

To Do Tracker: handy notepad designed for quickly making and organizing lists

Bargain Hunter: widget that searches Amazon and eBay and opens the results in a new window. Remembers your last 15 searches, as well.

Goofbay: thousands of items are listed on eBay with spelling errors or badly-written titles; this widget scouts out these hidden treasures. It can also find shill bidding and sort private feedback to show negative results.

Hard At Work: considering last week’s haiku frenzy, this might be useful. When your boss walks in while you’re surfing Weddingbee, just pop this widget open. One side is a fake Excel spreadsheet and the other, a fake Word document; flip as appropriate. Never miss another t-shirt giveaway again!

These are great, but do they have any of these tools for us non-MAC (IBM) users?

Edit my above post…I didn’t mean that to come out mean or anything…I’m envious of all these tools for Mac users and would love some for us stuck with PCs.

anaj95: I looked into it, and there’s a website that discusses Windows-friendly widgets right here:

http://wiki.williams.edu/display/docs/Widgets+for+PC+and+Mac+OS

And you can find more PC-friendly widgets right here:

http://widgets.yahoo.com/.

Hope that helps :)

PC users might have fun setting up the iGoogle homepage. It offers hundreds of options along these same lines.

I love the google calender! It’s great for people who are ADD (me!)/can never remember what they’re supposed to do that day (me!)/check their email every morning (me again!). I just go to my gmail account to use it, but it’s be nice if I had a Widget :-(
