About Beehive

Beehive

May 31st, 2007 @ 5:31 pm by Beehive

In today’s hive:

  1. misslisa wants to know if you prefer bands with diamonds that go all the way around, or a row of diamonds that end where the sidestones end on your e-ring and why?
  2. Andrea is looking for a good/affordable hotel in San Francisco for her August honeymoon.
  3. Katie wants to know if she should give up on her stationery designer. She contacted her in Jan for her Sept 2007 wedding, and Katie still doesn’t have her designs. She’s been emailing weekly and all she’s received so far are preliminary designs. When did you get your invites? Should she be frantic or is it too soon to worry?
  4. Snofy bought an A-line gown from a sample sale and just needs to hem and bustle the gown. Everyone she’s called says they need to see the dress to give a quote. She doesn’t want to spend another couple hundred on alterations… any suggestions for an affordable tailor in Queens?
  5. j w needs ideas for 4 bridesmaids’ gifts. She already bought their dresses, but wants to present something to them that’s not too expensive at the rehearsal dinner. Any ideas?

misslisa: I prefer a band with diamonds only half way around for two reasons. (1) I found that the bands rubbed my fingers a bit raw if the diamonds went all the way around. (2) I love having the band “squared off” like A.Jaffe’s rings. So, having diamonds all the way around was silly because they would not be seen.

JW: go to funkyoyster.com for cute bracelettes. I got all my helpers great red/white dangles… for $25/each.

Does anyone know if there are any Korean caterers or Korean hair/makeup studios on Martha’s Vineyard?

I need ideas for songs to dance to my uncle with at my reception. He is giving me away at the ceremony so I am going to do the “father/daughter” dance with him, but I can’t think of an appropriate song. All I have thought of so far is “Do You Realize?” by the Flaming Lips or “Northern Sky” by Nick Drake, but I don’t know if either of those would work.

misslisa - I prefer that mine go all the way around because then my ring will never randomly have all the diamonds hidden. I know that my engagement ring spins a fair amount even with the diamond on it to keep it from going all the way around so I can’t imagine keeping my wedding ring in perfect alignment 24/7! That said, my band has the teeny tiniest pave ever, so larger diamonds might irritate my fingers and probably would spin less.

Katie - we had a bit of a disaster with a similar invitation experience. Finally we just had to lay down the law and say “we need our invites by X date - can you do that or not?” They ended up going over that date by about a week, but definitely stepped into gear when we started getting serious. Before that they had never given us a single deadline just lots of “oh don’t worry, it will be done in plenty of time”

Snofy - as much of a pain as it is, I would physically carry the gown around to a couple different tailors for quotes. It really is vastly more difficult to alter different types of gowns, so I don’t blame them for needing to see it first, even though it definitely sucks from a customer point of view. But hopefully you’ll only have to visit one or two before you find the perfect one!

misslisa- I’m in the process of having my wedding band made and just tackled that issue! The diamonds on my band will go slightly more than half-way around (just like my e-ring), so the diamonds will still be visible if the ring moves a little on my finger. FMIL’s friends told me that their diamond eternity bands always snag on their clothes.

misslisa — mine go ALLLLLLL the way around and I LOOOOOOOOVE it. And the bigger diamonds that go all the way around are something that one can become accustomed to in about 5 minutes. My husband truly spoiled me just this once. The ring really gets noticed. So if you like the way it looks, not to worry about comfort; you get used to it very quickly. Another plus is I don’t have to keep rotating it; it’s always pretty and in the right position.

On the other hand (pun intended), this ring is higher maintenance. More stones to clean and check for looseness. It costs more. It does not work for people in certain hands-on professions or for those who don’t like having to clean it more. Also — very important! — resizing it is a bear (especially for larger stones, because one stone plus or minus makes a bigger diameter change), so you might consider getting it a half-size bigger than you wear now so there’s some wiggle room (e.g., pregnancy, arthritis); the engagement ring worn on the outside holds it on just fine. And it’s not really engraveable.

So, good luck deciding! My ring is high-maintenance and I like it that way. However, my very sensible practical sister switched to a solid metal band after she realized the diamond band had to come off to stuff a turkey and change diapers.

Melissa- I prefer the ring to have diamonds all the way around because then you will always see them. If it only goes half way, if the ring turns then you can’t see the sparkle that goes with your engagement ring. The two rings are meant to compliment eachother and if you get the diamonds all the way around, it will.

JW- Since you already saved them the trouble of having to pay for their dresses, that sould be more than enough. However, if you want to get them something to simply say ‘thank you’ I suggest you sit down and think about your girls. Think about their hobbies or something that they like or collect, or something that you like to do with them (think about them as individuals, you don’t have to get them the same thing.) However, if you want to do something the same or similar, think about some kind of jewelry to match their dresses but that they can wear every day, like earrings or a necklace. Good Luck.

misslisa — I chose half-way around because:
a) I didn’t want to have the diamonds on the bottom constantly banging on stuff
b) It’s a lot easier to resize if my hands ever get fatter or skinnier

misslisa - I tend to be overly paranoid in unfamiliar cities, and I like the fact that with one quick flick of the thumb, I can turn my ring so all the valuable stuff is on the inside, and the outside is just a plain band. Other than that, future sizing issues are probably the biggest thing to think about.

jw - mine are getting beaded necklaces I made to match their dresses. You can get all the parts at Michael’s or big Wal-Marts for a pittance, and it doesn’t take that much time (plus it’s an easy activity to do while watching TV). It’s personal, it’s cheap, they’ll love it.

misslisa, my wedding band has channel set diamonds on half of the band. I like it for the exact same reasons as moohaha and Sarah. Like Sarah said, it’s nice to be able to turn my rings around and have only a plain band showing; I do this when we go out to ride our motorcycle so there’s not a chance of road debris flying up and hitting the diamonds on my rings.

Andrea - my favorite place to stay in San Francisco is Hotel Bijou. It’s a small, boutique hotel in the center of town that has nice rooms and friendly staff. It doesn’t hurt that each room is named after a film that was shot in or about San Francisco. check out: http://www.jdvhospitality.com/hotels/hotel/3
Also, you could always stay in Berkeley and take the bart (subway) to the city (the Rose Garden Inn is amazing! http://www.bbonline.com/ca/rosegarden/)

i got my band half way around. when i turn it so that the diamonds are at the sides of my fingers, its not very comfortable, but it might be something you get used to. It does move around and you have to adjust it, but i find that i tend to play with my rings unconsciously anyhow.

2 things to consider.

the price: you would definately be paying more for an eternity band. with half the diamonds. you get the look of the eternity ring without the price.

comfort: try it on with your engagement ring and see how it feels. you may never have to turn your band around but your engagement ring will still move around. if you aren’t a very gentle and careful person, you will bang your diamonds and have to worry about them getting loose. that was one con for me.

if you can afford it and its comfortable with it then go for the eternity band!

Andrea: There is no such thing! Most boutique hotels start at $180/nigh and up, not including tax or breakfast. August is high season, so even these will likely be more expensive.

I would suggest VRBO.com. My FI’s father is coming here for a few days before they head to our destination wedding together. We will put him up in an apartment close to us (we only have 1 bdrm). I have used VRBO many times for holidays in other locations, including Europe. You can choose an apartment in a neighborhood that suits your tastes & feel like you’re a resident. There are apartments all over the City in great locations at very reasonable prices.

Alternatively, if you haven’t booked your flights yet, Expedia often has killer deals on Flight/Hotel when purchased together…Good Luck!

miss lisa- I’d go to a jeweller or a few and try some rings on. depending on your hand proportions, one or the other might look better because the sides of the ring as it goes around your finger will be thicker on a ring where the stones go all the way around. I preferred partial row rather than full round on my hand, though my ring has an annoying tendency to rotate since I sized it on the large size to allow for the wide range of shrinking and swelling my fingers go through :P

jw- do your bridesmaids have any particular passions or hobbies? my MOH is a foodie, so I intend to select a cookbook for her.

I just got my paddle fan programs back from our printer. They are on VERY heavy cardstock and we have to attach the wooden sticks to them. Can anyone who has made these before tell me the best type of glue to use to attach the stick to the fan? We are debating between rubber cement, hot glue, or something else…so figured I would ask the experts. Thanks!

misslisa- I like partially around, why spend the extra money on diamonds on the inside of your hand?

Katie - I might consider finding a new place for your invites, if she hasn’t gotten around to a final sample in 6 months, what makes you think she’ll have your invites ready on time?

Snofy - Have you taken the gown in for a quote yet? The alterations might not be as bad as you’re imagining, and if they are, perhaps you can talk them down a little bit…”such and such a shop offered me this price…can you beat it?”
