About Mrs. Bell Pepper

Welcome To Philadelphia!

I love large gable boxes. You don’t have to worry about wrapping tiny corners, they are so easy to assemble and all you need is a pretty ribbon to make your package complete! There’s also so much you could put inside of these boxes. For the labels I added a watermark image of the Liberty Bell and placed our welcome sign in front of the image.

Open the box and you’ll discover it loaded with our favorite snacks!

IMG_4902.JPG

Godiva hot chocolate, large bag of japanese rice crackers in the green box with our monogram, Tasty Kakes, and a lovely bag of delicious Caramel Bites! These cookies are sooo good and addicting. They are made in Holland and you can get them from any Trader Joes.

Before the wedding a lot of our friends are going to check out the area, so I included some visitor guides to help them find interesting places to go. I also designed a simple timeline and directions in case anyone decides to drive from the hotel.

There’s still room in the boxes and I don’t know what else to add. Bottled water? You won’t find Tylenol or mouth wash inside - I really don’t like mixing travel size toiletries with food items. I thought about soft pretzels but they might get stale by the time my guests receive the boxes. Chocolate covered pretzels? Scrapple? Cheesesteak? Water Ice? :) Hehe, just a few discoveries I made since moving to Philly. :)

I’ve lived in Philly for the last 6 years and what always strikes me is how much of the city I want to show off to my visitors. So often, they don’t have the time to see all the great, mostly hidden secrets of the city. This will definitely be the case for our wedding guests as well.

In our hotel baskets, we’re putting little trinkets from our favorite spots around the city: snow globes of the museums; key chains of the Logan Square fountain, Rittenhouse Square, Reading Terminal Market, and the city skyline (although it’s currently changing); stickers of the Phillies and Eagles; and anything else we find in tourist gift shops and elsewhere around town.

Have fun with it- you’re off to a great start!

My fiance and I are doing gift bags filled only with Philadelpha-related items… and maybe some Hershey’s chocolate for my hometown (I’m from Harrisburg). We’re perpetually arguing over soft pretzels — I think they would be stale and the salt would get all over. One Philly based idea would be to include the Goldberg’s Peanut Chews — they’ve been made in Philadelphia since the ’20s. Maybe a can of root beer, which was invented in 1866 by a pharmacist in Philadelphia?

Mmmm I love stroopwaffels! (aka Caramel Bite). I have never heard them called that before though. Probably because I’m Dutch. They are so good if you put them in the microwave for a few seconds so the caramel is melted. YUM!

The box looks great. How did you make the label you put on the front? Did you have to cut out the circles individually with a scalloped scissor?

Don’t forget some pork roll! Haha.

I second the Goldberg peanut chews! We used them in our Philly welcome bags for our wedding too. And, I adore those carmel cookies (I, too, know them as stroopwafels from travels in the Netherlands but was delighted to see Trader Joes carrying them too–they are really close to the true taste of a stroopwafel!). Anyway–lovely, lovely!

Where did you get the gable box? I haven’t seen any that are designed (they’ve all been plain white or brown)….

I debated for months whether to do something like this for our out-of-towners, but in the end, we chose something friendlier to the budget.

Since the groom’s parents are hosting a welcome party the night before the wedding, we’re comfortable not distributing snacks, and most guests only have free time in the area on Saturday morning and early afternoon, so we didn’t want them to be overwhelmed with options.

They’re getting a single sheet of paper (only slightly creatively folded), with the map from the invite, a summary of where they “need” to be when for the wedding activities, and directions and/or contact numbers for a variety of local sites, services, and activities. On the reverse, mostly just to show off, we’re printing the crossword puzzle proposal, even though it’s almost certainly too hard to be fun for most of them.

where did you get the gable boxes? they seem pretty expensive but i LOVE them.

we’re also getting married in the philly area and wanted the soft pretzels for post-ceremony but they get stale after a day. thinking about asking the pretzel place if they’d package them day of…

asher’s chocolates? theyr’e not really local to philly, local to lansdale, but they’re delicious.

something chocolatey or fruity might be a good combo with what you have so far - what about something healthy, like apples? ;-) or you could put m&ms or sour patch kids or soemthing in little cellophane bags.

Bottled water is an excellent idea. I’m even thinking of making a custom label for the bottles to make it more personal.

Instead of the bottle water, you should get Wawa iced tea!

This post made me homesick! I grew up 20 minutes away from Philly and am now living in Arkansas until hubby and I move. I miss Rita’s Water Ice and Pat’s and Wawa hoagies and those wonderfully salty soft pretzels!!

How about postcards and a disposable camera? I also like those mini water bottles w/your monogram used for the label.

Hehe, I forgot about WaWa! it’s like a candy store for adults! My fiance and I go there pretty often for ice cream and hoagies. :)

ACtually, I don’t remember where I got the gable boxes from. I only bought about 25 of them and it didn’t cost too much.

Goldberg peanut chews? I have never tried them before. Where can I find them?

I never understood scrapple and I’m afraid to see what’s really inside a pork roll! :)

Miss Bell Pepper-
I would be surprised if you couldn’t find the Goldberg Peanut Chews in a local grocery store, or even the candy aisle of Target. They’re sold around here in D.C., so they should definitely be sold somewhere around Philly since they are native to the area!
They’re quite good, for the record. :)
I’ll be in Philly next weekend for a few wedding related things and to set up an away rotation at Jefferson, so I’ll keep my eyes out and let you know if I see them anywhere!

Those caramel bites? Dutch stroopwaffles- best way to eat them is with icecream in between…makes the caramel go hard!

I love the labels. What program did you use to make them? DO you have instructions to share? : )

I used Adobe Illustrator to create the label. For the circular outline I used Microsoft Word and I cut out each labe using scalloped scissors.
