About Beehive

Beehive

June 1st, 2007 @ 4:13 pm by Beehive

In today’s hive:

  1. Can anyone tell Werlemmings whether there are any Korean caterers or Korean makeup/hair studios on Martha’s Vineyard?
  2. Kelly needs song suggestions for her dance with her uncle (he’s giving her away, so she’d like to do a sort of “father-daughter” dance with him).
  3. m&m is looking for an affordable florist in Queens (her wedding budget is $2500).
  4. bobbi would like some great idea for programs. She wants to DIY them, but she needs some inspiration!
  5. miss melodious is trying to figure out what this is and where to get it. Can anyone help?
  6. christina would like to know: should she send an invitation to her photographer?
  7. Instead of a guest book, Lily and her fiance are having their picture made into a cloth wall scroll. But she isn’t sure what kind of markers to use for signatures–will archival markers bleed through? Sharpies?
  8. Tea’s college roommate is getting married this month; she’s not invited to the wedding, but is it OK to send her a small gift from her registry?

8. Tea, it is completely wonderful to send a gift to your friend even if you aren’t invited to the ceremony. I’m sure the couple will appreciate the gesture.

Tea - absolutely. We received several gifts from people who were not invited to the wedding. It was very touching.

Bobbi, can you give us a style of theme of your wedding so we can help with ideas?

Kelly, I think Unforgettable by Nat King Cole is very touching. It says that he is special and means alot to you, but isn’t overly father-daughter-ish. There is also a version of Natalie Cole singing some over the original track so that would bring in even more meaning. I think my dad and I will be dancing to that one!

Kelly, “I Saw Her First” by Heartland is the song my father picked for our first dance. I made him choose :) The lyrics are great, and I tear up when I read them (*note to self: waterproof maskera is a MUST MUST MUST)

Christina: I’m providing dinner for both my photographer and his assistant, so I will be sending them an invitation. I figure anyone who’s going to have dinner is an invited guest.

Kelly: What about “What a wonderful world” performed by Louis Armstrong? It’s not too “father daughter-ey” and my DJ told me its under 3 minutes long, so you won’t have to dance in the spotlight for that long. :)

You don’t send invitations to vendors, though it could be a nice touch if you have extras. Typically, your site should provide a vendor meal for a reduced price. Check to find out what your venue serves, and as long as it isn’t a meal in a box, you should be providing that. This is their job, they aren’t expected to be treated as invited guests or have a place at a table, nor would they want that. As a singer who’s done many weddings, there’s really no reason for me to stay through the reception, sitting with random folks. My DJ doesn’t even want the meal we’re providing for her!

hmmm…wouldn’t receiving gifts from people you didn’t invite make you feel a tiny bit guilty??

Tea - I think it’s a nice gesture to send a small gift…but I did that once (it was maybe $20 or less off her registry) and the girl felt so guilty that she felt the need to say something to me about why I wasn’t invited. And no amount of saying, “I didn’t mind, I understand” made her feel better.

Hi - thanks for asking Linda - ivory and black, october weddding, and i am trying to incorporate antique elements with the modern. I like the program shown on http://www.papelvivo.com/programs.html (the purple one) but dont know how to find an embosser like that. I also like this one http://www.whiteaisle.com/calligraphy_program.htm, but not sure it would be so great without the pretty calligraphy. Help meeeeeeee!

Werlemmings - I do all of that type of searching through google maps. Nothing that came up on a search for “catering” or “caterer” on the Vineyard had a name that would imply they specialize in Korean cuisine; also, when searching “Korean,” the first thing that comes up is a restaurant on the Cape (I think I’ve been there, and I’m pretty sure it was a sushi bar). Certainly this isn’t a definitive answer, but I gotta say it doesn’t look good.

Bobbi - I’m about to take my 5.5″ square booklet to the printer this evening. I totally scammed the design from the Cranes website. The various program bios on theknot have lots of examples; here’s one:
http://community.theknot.com/cs/ks/user/page.aspx?username=theprogrambio
Also, way at the top of this very page, try putting “program” in the search box. Mrs. Spider and Mrs. Blueberry both had totally reasonable (but very different) DIY programs, and if you’re really ambitious, check out Mrs. Plumeria’s jaw-dropping masterpiece.

Tea - How about a nice card sent after the wedding instead? I know I would feel guilty about getting a gift from someone who wasn’t invited, but then I’m almost a walking ball of guilt.

Miss Melodious– do you mean the short veil over her face? It’s called a birdcage veil, and if you google it there are a ton of options. It’s generally made out of something they call “french netting.”

I still think it’s kind of weird when girls who aren’t engaged are activley planning their wedding. I think the avg. 1 yr +/- time is the perfect amount of time to obsess…otherwise you get too caught up in it all. There are soooo many things women can be learning about and exploring in their lives and devoting their energy to…weddings just shouldn’t take over years of it.

Does anyone know where I can find flower girl dresses in toddler sizes? Both of my flower girls will need to order a 4T and I haven’t been able to find many dresses that come in toddler sizes. Any ideas?

I was wondering, for all the other DIY-ers out there, if anyone could recommend a reputable printing company for my invitations. Either online or in the New Jersey area? I’ve already heard of Catprint, but wondered of any others some of you may have used for your invites?

How should I invite people to the rehearsal dinner? Should I send a separate invitation or put an enclosure in the wedding invitation? We want to invite the wedding participants and spouses, as well as family members, but aren’t sure if we should wait for the RSVPs or invite everyone? I am afraid it will be almost everyone that is coming to the wedding! Is there a proper way to do this?

Kelly,
You might listen to “Love and Happiness” by Emmylou Harris (it’s a duet with a guy).

Big impotant question about ring metals - I have to wear nickel-free, sensitive solutions or sterling silver earrings because I have a reaction to some “ingredient” in earrings that aren’t in those categories. I thought it was a nickel allergy, and my poor FH bought me a platinum ring because I was so scared I would have a reaction with white gold.

We’ve been ring shopping, and come to find out they stopped using nickel in white gold some years ago. Now they use rhodium. Anyone know if this would fix my allergy problem, or is rhodium something people tend to react to as well? I would have to spend money to custom order a ring in platinum if we could get it easier and cheaper in a white gold. I’m just so afraid I’ll have a reaction and not be able to wear my wedding band!

Anyone have any ideas on if I’m ok or not? I’m not worried about matching my platinum e-ring because poor FH has already spent too much on my difficult self!

Does anyone from Toronto know of good shops/tailors that will make custom made (preferably modern) qipaos/cheongsams?

I don’t have a question- just a really great tip to share! I wanted a vintage style ring and looked at regular jewelry stores, where they were pretty expensive. Then I went to an antique store that sold estate rings- I got an 18k white gold beautifully hand-engraved band with diamonds on it from the 1920s for $165! They even had some antique rings that looked like modern rings, but at a fraction of the price of a jewelry store. I guess some people might not like having a “pre-owned” ring but I think it’s neat, and the truth this that diamonds are traded among jewelers all the time anyway and then mounted on new settings.

Bobbi,
the last ones can be really easy to make just using MS word. Open a new document and go to Page setup -> Portrait -> and change the multiple pages to 2 pages per sheet. You can get some pretty fonts at http://www.1001freefonts.com/sfonts3.htm and download it for free. Use that for the front page.

For the first one, You can look online for an embosser to go the easy route by imprinting the design on the paper. (if you like the embossed look you can go with a light grey look or stamp it to give it the different feel). Also, you can just forego the embosser and use a punch you can buy at any local craft store. They have fantastic lace looking ones now that might help.

Both are very pretty and can be done with your printer or even if you want, print out one and then take it to your local print shop or office supply store and let them print it all for you.

Hope this helps out. Good luck!

Kesha, I found great dresses for my junior bridesmaid at Fox n’ Lily. I know they do dresses for tinier tots too. Also, look at The Briar Patch - very reasonably priced!
Good luck!

andrea,
separate invite, usually mailed with the return address of the hosts (for instance MIL/FIL’s address). and the invites usually go out much later than the wedding invites.

I have a nickel allergy too, and I hadn’t heard that they had stopped using nickel in the white gold. I do know that I can’t wear sterling silver either, and I don’t think that has any nickel in it, but rather other random metals that I’m still allergic too. The only thing that prevents me from getting a reaction is 16k yellow gold or higher (which I don’t like) and platinum.

Ditto on the allergy. I can’t wear sterling silver and even some 14k gold gives me problems. Most of my gold jewelry are 18k or 22k gold including my engagement and wedding rings. I have had no problem with them. Some pieces are quite old and I don’t know whether they are nickel free or not. Have you had problems with gold jewelry before? If not, then I don’t think you’d have problems. Just to be sure, you may want to consult with your doctor.
