In the wee hours of this morning, I leaned over to Mr. Tomato and asked, “Guess what day it is today?”
I always enjoy doing this to him. I could tell in his mind he was wondering, “Your birthday? My birthday? Someone’s birthday? Some sort of anniversary?” After a few moments, he sheepishly said he didn’t know.
“It’s June 1!” I said excitedly, “One more month until we get married!!!”
Holy mackeral.
(I have no idea where that originally came from but I like the sound of it)
So to celebrate our one-month-before-we-get-married-day, I’d like to share our engagement story with you all!
The Proposal
(as told by me)
Oct 21, 2006
For the past week, Mr. Tomato and I had planned a day in Napa/San Francisco. Our first stop was Rutherford Hill Winery. We had planned to get there by 10am, but we started running a little late when he had to make a detour bathroom stop. Then he started fussing we were going to be behind schedule. We didn’t have reservations or anything, so I tried to reassure him it wasn’t such a big deal (I usually get upset if we are late to things).
We got to Rutherford around 10:30am. We opted for the $10 wine tasting, and Mr. Tomato suggested that we find a picnic spot. I didn’t understand why we couldn’t just sit on one of the benches right outside the winery, especially if we were going to continue tasting wines, but he insisted.
When we got to the picnic area, I suggested a table with a nice view. “Let me look around,” he said, as he wandered around from table to table. “Hm, let’s go to another picnic spot, just to see.”
At this point I was getting a little annoyed and agitated. I was wearing heels and my feet were hurting from the dusty path. But I followed him to the Olive Grove Picnic Area. As we walked, I noticed yellow leaves on the ground. As we walked further, I noticed they weren’t leaves, they were yellow rose petals (yellow roses are my favorite flower). How odd, I thought to myself, there aren’t any rose bushes in this picnic area…
“Why are there yellow rose petals on the ground?” I asked Mr. Tomato.
“I have no idea!” he exclaimed nervously. I shot him a weird look.
“Oh look! This table is reserved! Let’s sit here!” he said. And in front of us was a picnic table covered with white linen, sprinkled with yellow rose petals and purple orchids, and a bouquet of the longest stem roses I have ever seen. “Why are we sitting here? Is this for us?” I wondered. At this point I thought he was doing something nice for me, but not really knowing why…
He then handed me two cards, and told me to read them. Halfway through, I started tearing up unexpectedly at the words he had written. When I finished, I turned to him and he pulled out a box.
“Will you marry me?”
I was so emotional at this point I couldn’t answer but I managed to nod my head. I just stared at the very Bulgari ring I loved.

“Isn’t the box COOL?” Mr. Tomato asked. (the Bulgari box is definitely cool by the way)
Yeah…” I said. “Are you going to put it on my finger?”
And with shaky/trembling fingers, he put it on the appropriate finger. “It’s an IF (internally flawless)…just like you,” he kidded. (Don’t worry, he definitely knows I have my share of weaknesses). I couldn’t help but hug him for a very, very long time with tears in my eyes. Then we ended with a little prayer.
For the rest of the day, I was filled with an incredible sort of joy and peace. I couldn’t stop smiling! I wonder how the wedding day will feel in comparison. ![]()
