Mrs. Kiwi's Picture
Mrs. Kiwi, Los Angeles Age and Occupation in 06: 27, Bookkeeper Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, P.E. Teach/Coach @ private schools in LA Engagement Date: March 31, 2006 Wedding Date: November 3, 2007 Venue: Radisson Hotel About Me: I'm a bookkeeper who failed high school algebra. I'm currently living in Los Angeles, literally a street over from where I grew up with Mr. Kiwi, my honey of three years. We have a jumbo mini-dachshund (seriously, he's huuuuge), and we're planning an autumn themed wedding on a shoestring, paid for by ourselves. The wedding date is my late grandma's birthday, I needed her there somehow, and that seemed like the best way for us. I can't believe I'm a Bee! I couldn't be more proud!
About Mrs. Kiwi

Our Date, Too!

June 1st, 2007 @ 3:10 pm by Mrs. Kiwi

Along the lines of Miss Pumpkin’s post, here’s the deal with our wedding planning, how it started and why we are engaged this long.

As you know, we got engaged at Disneyland. As I believe you also know, the ring had been chosen by me already and was hidden away in the house. Since we weren’t much for saving until then, we literally had to start at the bottom of the barrel for money for the wedding.

Since I come from a not-so-rich background, and Mr. Kiwi is the youngest of three- both whose weddings were paid for by his family, we decided to fund the wedding ourselves. Although we had decided that we wanted an April wedding when we had first gotten engaged (on March 31, 2006), we did a little bit of calculating and realized that was not possible in the year we’d have to plan.

So… plan B was formed. Like Miss Pumpkin, there were circumstances that demanded certain months weren’t usable. Mr. Kiwi is a teacher and coach, so he’s in school from the end of August to the middle of June. As the summer months are high-dollar months here in Los Angeles and Mr. Kiwi is touring with the beach volleyball tournaments, we knew we’d have to figure something else out. This leads us to the months during school- football season is September to the end of October, sometimes running into the first week of November. Basketball season is the second week of November to March. From March to June it’s track/volleyball season. We quickly realized it would be impossible to find a perfect time to marry, and decided that we’ll do it in November, before the holiday season begins.

When we looked at November, we had initially though of a lunchtime affair on Sunday, since we weren’t getting married in the church. Then I took a better look at the calendar and said, “Honey, look! Grandma’s birthday is on a Saturday!” After checking with family to make sure it would be okay to have that date, we decided to book it at the hotel we had already looked at. After changing from April to November, Sunday to a Saturday, the day was finally set.

Now, we’re crossing our fingers that football doesn’t run long this year. Since 15% of our guest list are the coaches who would cover for Mr. Kiwi, we’d have to forfeit the playoff game. So I guess there’s still some stuff we’ve yet to plan for!

Did you have any circumstances that led you to choose a certain date?

Mr. Eggplant and I chose our date based on the weather and availability of our bridal party and venues. Not so romantic. :-) Ideally, I would’ve chosen a later date, but he wanted to get married and start our lives together sooner and I couldn’t argue with that!

The Mr. and I chose our date by a process of elimination like most of the other bee postings. I thought a 7-7-07 wedding would be super–but, then my MOH informed me that her brother was getting hitched that weekend, and that if she had to choose….. (you know where this is going)…. so we himmed and hawwwwwed and settled on an August affair to remember.

Miss Kiwi my FI is a teacher/coach too so we settled on the summer so he wouldn’t miss school and on a few weeks where he wont have practice during the summer.

We’re getting married in the three-week window between when the groom’s brother (and best man) returns to the states from Taipei, and when he leaves for Dar-es-Salaam. I mean, hey, neither of us had a strong opinion of when it should be, so having the choices narrowed down that much was really an effective time-saver.

My FI’s sister was pregnant at the time so we had to do before she could no longer fly or after she had the baby. Luckily our first choice of venues had an opening. We got married five months after he proposed!

We picked our date out of convenience. My fiance is a medical student and I am a Ph.D. student, so there was a very small window between his clinical requirements and my thesis meetings and research and predictions as to when I would be running my animal studies and not able to leave the lab. We decided on the Sunday of Memorial Day (2008) because he will have graduated medical school the weekend before and have a few weeks of freedom before starting residency, and since we are Jewish and can’t get married on a Saturday, the Sunday worked perfectly since all our guests would have Monday off anyways.

Your engagement is short compared to mine. I’m not sure it’s a long engagment til it reaches the 1,000 days mark.

I’m a teacher as well so we had to work around that schedule, add to that the fact that I’ve spent the last 5 summers working at a summer camp and want most of my camp crew to be there we ended up with a short window in the middle of June (actually the Sunday after school got out) OR the second weekend in August. Our venue wasn’t availabe in June so August it is!

Speaking of getting engaged at Disney, there’s a really cute Mickey/Minnie cake serving set for sale on eBay right now and it made me think of you!

we actually picked our date based on the lunar calendar “lucky days”, my family’s requirement. my FI wanted to get married in spring of 07 and i said no way could i plan everything in such a short time, so then we ended up with the late summer/early fall for weather. then my parents are small business owners and are open 6 days a week so we have to get married on sunday. then my mom had to get someone to call Hong Kong since the calendars didn’t come out yet to find out it it was a lucky day. so it actually has nothing to do with the fact that 9/9 is a “same-digit” day. :-)

i had always wanted a fall wedding–i love the weather, the colors, everything. then, fiance and i started looking around at venues, and since we’re paying for our wedding ourselves, cost definitely became a motivator/discourager! we discovered the the student union at the university i work at rents out their beautiful ballroom (and offer catering, decorating, etc) to those affiliated with the university for a VERY reasonable cost. great! problem solved! the one catch? they only rent out the ballrooom when school isn’t in session. the result? bye bye dream fall wedding, hello august! it honestly took me a while to deal with this (i’ve never been a summer gal, and the “typical” summer colors just aren’t me). luckily, i got over it, realized that this way, my boy & i will be married even sooner than originally planned, and i can make it exactly as i want it to be (i.e., no pastels!). it all works out in the end, doesn’t it?!

Gabzoots, I feel your pain!
I always wanted a winter wedding — I hate the hot, humid weather of summer. Unfortunately, as my post above explains, basically the only weekend that worked around my fiance’s obligations of finishing up medical school and starting residency, and my obligations as a Ph.D. research student, is Memorial Day.
The biggest fights my mother and I have had are over decorations and color scheme — she thinks that because it is spring, I need to have spring-y colors, like pistachio green and peach, but I’m sticking with black and white. Kind of a winter wedding feel, but since it’s a black tie wedding, we can definitely get away with it.
