Taste The Rainbow

June 1st, 2007 @ 4:58 pm by Mrs. Lovebug

I don’t know what blog-hopping path I followed to discover this site, but it led me to a rainbow wonderworld called Glassybaby.

Adorably named glassybabies are votive-sized, multi-layered glass vases made with varioulsy-shaded “color rods” to produce a look with texture and depth. They come in 53 different colors, can be used as drinking cups, candle holders, or vases, and are virtually indestructible.

At $40 each, you couldn’t exactly bedeck your halls with them. But if you’re trying to match a tricky shade for a special spot in your decor, these could be just the thing.

They’re hand-blown in a very ornate process, and the proceeds from sales of certain colors are donated to various charities, which is always a bonus in my book. :)

Thanks for posting on glassybabies! I love seeing Seattle businesses on national sites [go Northwest!]. I have a glassybaby that I keep on my kitchen windowsill - they’re gorgeous, heavy duty and super relaxing when you have a ton of dishes to wash.

Wow. So funny that you posted this today. I ran across glassbaby earlier this week and fell in LOVE the photos in their gallery.

Even funnier that you posted that particular pic, b/c I would love to recreate that with the different shades of green for my centerpieces (sans black tray). I’m 99% positive I’m doing all-candle-and-no-flowers for the reception.

In fact, I was going to attempt a test run this weekend with inexpensive clear votives and green vellum. Any suggestions???

Budget version: I wonder if you could get a sort-of similar look by a misty spray painting of plain glass votives. Maybe have a base cover and then mist with metallic. Is there a glass-friendly type of spray paint?

Another way to decorate votives (I did this in elementary school) is to fill a bucket with water and add a small layer of oil-based paint on top of the water. The oil paint floats. Add some specs of other colored paints and swirl a little if desired, then dip the votive into the water and swirl a little if desired, and pull it out again. Leaves a cool swirly/feathery painted pattern on the outer glass. (Sorry, no DIY step-by-step available.)

Thanks, Iris. Any tips on the water-to-paint ratio?
