Wedding Theme Breakthrough!

June 1st, 2007 @ 11:15 am by Mrs. Lovebug

Exciting news chez Lovebug. We’ve hit upon a really cool theme for our wedding.

It’s been murder trying to decide upon a motif, a style, or even just colors. I don’t do well with a surfeit of options; I have regular meltdowns in the cereal aisle. So the freedom to design a wedding from scratch was a bit overwhelming. But months of agonizing indecision ended with a midnight visit from a muse…

The inspiration: I’m a writer who loves all things vintage. I love old typewriters, and I adore typewriter fonts — I use them whenever I print anything. Also, Mr. Lovebug and I are candy freaks who fell in love at first sight, something we prize about our relationship. And finally, my dress, as reader LS brilliantly pointed out, has an almost ’40s look to it.

The result: Love at first sight is…The Sweetest ‘Type’ of Love. It’s a reference to how we met, to my writing, to our candy obsession. Picture a wedding with motifs of typing and candy, and a touch of ’40s vintage charm.

Details: A vintage typewriter guestbook. Tables named after fonts. Pale pink, silver, cream, and black. Bridesmaids in glamorous silver charmeuse dresses with pink rosettes, carrying pale pink bouquets. Me with a simple cream bouquet to contrast my pink dress and let its details take center stage. Candy galore, all in shades of light pink and cream, and favors tagged with “the sweetest type of love” in a typewriter font.

More details: Seating cards making use of vintage typewriter keys (how, I have no clue). My bouquet bound in pink ribbon and accented with vintage typewriter keys spelling out “L O V E” instead of buttons. Mr. Lovebug with vintage typewriter key cufflinks. Black and white photographs of us strung up. A great mix of music that includes swing and big band numbers. Visual inspirations:

What do you think? Please be gentle; this is after weeks and weeks of about-faces and switch-ups. I mean, I originally thought I wanted an ultra-modern chartreuse-and-aqua wedding. But somehow, this just feels totally right. It may not be anything wildly original, but I feel excited and inspired.

And should anyone have ideas or suggestions on how to flesh this out, consider me a sponge. :)

I think it’s a very original idea! I love it . I love going to weddings where they incorporate such personal touches to their wedding theme. Our wedding is a very traditional wedding with a vintage flair. We use a vintage looking invitation motif, also to be used on table numbers, and lots of candles to set the ambience. I love the typewriter keys. I’m excited to see how you’ll use them.

Good luck!

It sounds like it is going to be absolutely beautiful! You have put a lot of thought into it, and I am sure a lot more hard work is to come. I can’t wait to see photos as you start some of your projects!

You can get jewelry made with vintage typewriter keys at several different websites - some will even let you pick the letters. It would make a great BM gift!

What a coincidence!! I have almost the EXACT same theme for my wedding! We are using the typewriter guest book and incorporating vintage inspired “things” throughout the ceremony and reception!!

sounds absolutely gorgeous. my only double-take was at the silver bridesmaid dresses–they put in my mind hideously metallic dresses…but i’m sure you’re not thinking of metallic dresses [are you?]

I agree with joyful… there are some cute typewriter jewlery sites… search for them on etsy.com.

I recently bought a typewriter-key necklace and love it! (and it was only 10 bucks!!)

Love it! I saw some placecards not the long ago that used the typewriter keys to say which table they were seated at - they all had to be numbers, but it was so cool. You could also use them to indicate their entree choice. You could also use a old typewriter to type the names up, or for the covers of your programs, the inner envelopes on your invites, etc. If you type into a heavier, cotton based paper, you can scan it in and blow it up a bit to get the texture for use on more mass produced items.

Good luck!

Sounds fun! I agree with inajya about the silver bridesmaid dresses. I’d have to see it. I’m not a fan of metallic silver or dull silver though.

Yeah this is pretty much my wedding too! Mine is in August (see my WB app if you want the link to my blog ;-) I changed from silver/gray to blue because I thought in August, gray would be too drab. But I think it will be perfect for April!

I was going to suggest the last Martha Stewart mag for a great idea page, but it looks like you already found it!

Good luck with your planning!

I’m doing the typewriter guest book as well (yes, I stole the idea from Martha Stewart). Apparently guests love it! My wedding will be in an old art deco space, so I (thankfully) have little choice but to use vintage inspired decorations/themes. Very old world glam, it’ll be.

I love themed weddings, especially ones that is personal to the couple…and it’s soo apparent that you love this theme and that’s all that matters!! Another option to naming tables by fonts is to name them by your favorite authors, that way you can include an excerpt from that author. Can’t wait to see all of your great ideas unfold!!!

That sounds really neat. I love how you used candy colors without making it sound gaudy. Pastels can be overwhelming in large amounts, but it sounds like you’ve thought it through a great deal and are only using it in appropriate places.
Congrats!
