Beehive

June 4th, 2007 @ 4:10 pm by Beehive

In today’s hive:

  1. Kesha is having a hard time finding flower girl dresses in toddler sizes (specifically, 4T).  Can anyone help her out?
  2. tina would like recommendations for a reputable printing company for her invitations, either online or in the New Jersey area.
  3. lookingforaphotog is hoping to find someone who’s worked with photographer Jeff Lau NYC, and who can speak to his work/rates/reliability.
  4. Can anyone suggest a wholesaler in NYC where squarevases can purchase square-cube vases that are 4×4 or 5×5?
  5. Andrea would like to know how to invite guests to her rehearsal dinner; should she send a separate invitation?  Or put an enclosure in the wedding invitation?
  6. Can anyone recommend a good asian makeup artist in northern New Jersey or New York for starrynight?
  7. Kandaceandjason has allergy concerns about her wedding ring, and would like some advice.  Read her whole story here.
  8. Monica is looking for a tailor in Toronto to make qipaos/cheongsams.  Any recommendations?

Andrea - I think it depends on the formality of your events. If you are having a casual RD and a more formal wedding, a casual invite inside with your formal invite may compromise the atmosphere of both of them. I don’t think there’s necessarily anything wrong with putting them both together, especially since it would be easier to keep tabs of all RSVPs at once.

I think we are sending separate invitations, if only because I want the RD to be a very laid back casual party (that, and the fact that we may just be doing invites by phone for all the people here in town!)

I have a question regarding double faced silk satin sashes. I’m looking for one to go with my gown for my upcoming wedding. Anyone know of a good website where I can get my hands on one? Thank you.

Monica,
Try http://www.aliceko.com

Alice designs chinese dresses for Miss Hong Kong Pageants and she has quite a selection of fabrics. I will be using her services for my wedding in March, and I live in New York! My cousin has also used her services and it is great! She is a bit on the pricey side though, but the quality of the work is very good!

I’m looking for multilingual invitations, but don’t want to pay too much. Any recommendations for New York invitation shops I can visit?

Kesha: I got my flower girl a Mon Cheri dress (specifically: style Kamille from the Spring ‘07 line). They have sizes from 2 (same as 2T) and up.

Andrea: I think it would be fine either way, but if the formality doesn’t match the style of your wedding invite, I’d send a separate one.

Kandaceandjason: I don’t think I can specifically answer your question, but perhaps you could try getting a cheap, plain white gold/rhodium plated band and see how it feels? Also, be aware that the rhodium coating for white gold does wear off over time (which is why the white can sometimes gradually seem to fade to yellow). Then the ring will need to be re-rhodiumed. I don’t know if this could possibly affect your allergy or not, but maybe a platinum band would be best just to be safe! :)

Rei-chan: I know http://www.papermart.com has double-faced satin ribbon in various widths and colors, if you wanted to attempt making your own… you’d have to buy a full roll, most likely, but it might still end up being cheaper than the brand-name kind… also, try Amazon. :)

HTH!

Kandace -
I’m allergic to nickel too. I can think of 2 options for you - (1) go to a dermatologist and get tested to see if you’d have a reaction to rhodium. I found out I was allergic to Nickel via a patch I wore on my back for a couple of days. (2) Maybe buy a whitegold ring at a store with a good return policy. If you don’t feel wierd about wearing a ring before being married, maybe you can wear the ring for a few days (maybe sleep with it on at night) and see if you have a reaction. Hope this helps!

Flower girl dresses: our girls purchased theirs from http://onesmallchild.com. They have a decent return policy if the dresses don’t fit.

Starrynight - I’m using Sachiko Yanase 917-282-2081. She’s based out of Astoria, Queens but will travel without extra charge if the distance is within 50 miles of her. She comes highly rated on some weddingbee posts and on the Liwedding.com forums. My friend used her for her wedding this past March and looked amazing. Her pkg for me is $500, which includes hair/makeup for the bride (including trial hair/makeup), and 4 hair/makeup combos for the other ladies; $70 per service extra for anything outside of the pkg.

Kandace. I agree about going to a dermatologist if you have not been formally tested before. They don’t always have every answer, but they can surprise you when they are spot on!

Also write to the folks at greenkarat.com They have been very helpful to me and my fiance during our ring-shopping process with all of our questions and we have not spent any money there yet.

Starrynight - I’m also using Sachiko Yanase for Bridal and Bridal Party Hair and Makeup. Her rates are great and she is super sweet. She spent nearly 3 hours with me doing hair and makeup trial session for $75.00. If you book her, she credits the $75.00 towards your wedding day fees. She also comes to you or the wedding stie the day of the wedding to do your makeup/hair. Contact info: sachikoyanase@earthlink.net

My cousin used Minhee Kim (NJ). She does makeup only. I loved my cousins makeup but I went with Sachiko because she did both hair/makeup. I don’t know exactly how much Minhee Kim charges but she also come to you to do the makeup on wedding day and stays up until the ceremony for touch-ups. Her email is minheezi@hotmail.com.

Kandaceandjason :

I have the same sort of allergy. It’s so bad for me that I can’t wear earrings. Anyway, I have a 18k white gold band and haven’t had a problem with it. I get it rhodium plated about once a year. My advice: get a “meaningless” cheap(er) ring and wear it for a week/month that has the gold weight you want your engagement ring in. You’ll know quickly if it’s going to work or not. Good luck!

Monica, I’m in Toronto, and I’ve checked out a few and ordered mine. I haven’t got mine back yet, but my mom has, and it’s great. The seamstress works out of her home, so perhaps it would be better if you emailed me for her contact info.

here’s a temp email address from an unrelated posting of mine from craigslist that you can use to contact me:

for Monican:

oh, I also have to say I’m not a fan of Alice Ko’s work based on what I’ve seen in her store front.

kandaceandjason :

Try Palladium! My E-ring is in Palladium and it has all the same features as Platinum, doesn’t change colors, and is without any of the allergy possibilities.

The best part is it’s the same price range as white gold.

Hope that helps!

Is it OK to wear a white sundress with a black floral pattern on it and black trim to a wedding as a guest? I know I wouldn’t really mind as long as no one wore a completely white dress to mine, but not sure what others think!

christina — I think it’s fine. I saw a bunch of b&w-combo dresses at a wedding this weekend. None of them looked “bridey.” Note: There is an b&w strapless Ann Taylor dress that’s been on sale lately, and there were 2 or 3 women at the wedding wearing it…. to be avoided unless that wouldn’t bother you in the least.
