About Mrs. Corn

Coastal Not Beachy

June 4th, 2007 @ 12:03 pm by Mrs. Corn

One of the first questions anyone asks (other than ‘have you set a date yet’?) after they hear I am engaged is, ‘What are your wedding colors?’

That is a good question. Mr. Corn and I don’t actually have wedding colors that I am aware of; more, our wedding has a defined ’style’. We are going for a rustic (yet elegant) New England coastal feel. This is decidedly not the same as a beach themed wedding. Translation: lots of natural coastal elements; sea grasses, hydrangeas, sand, water, etc.

If we had to pick a color, I guess it would be blue. My favorite blue of course; the blue the water is in New England around 3:00pm on a bright, sunny day. It is a shimmery, deep blue. Believe it or not, I found the exact shade in a paper from Paper Source. I paired the stardream paper with a cream paper that has dark chocolate brown text for the save-the-dates, the invitations, the response cards, the table seat cards and the thank you notes. The invitations also have a natural colored, fibrous paper wrap that is tied with a dark chocolate brown satin ribbon.

The bridesmaids are wearing a medium cornflower blue, bell sleeved, v-neck cashmere sweater that I found at Garnet Hill with a deep blue, satin, A-line skirt to the floor from David’s Bridal and they will be carrying white hydrangeas.

The wedding favors are a square glass ornament that I am filling part way with sand and tiny shells and a small square paper insert with our monogram and the date of our wedding on it. They each have a thin, sapphire blue ribbon attached at the top. They will be placed on the tables to add to the centerpieces which are antique ball jars with the metal and glass lids filled with sand, sea grasses, maybe some shells, candles and water. Also on the table will be votive holders filled with sand and tea lights.

I will be honest, there really isn’t much out there idea-wise if you are looking for New England coastal elements for your wedding. There is, however, a bevy of palm tree, sand dollar, jumping dolphin, and grass skirt stuff which is what you are led to if you search for ‘coastal themed wedding’. But for all of you gals out there who know the Northeast coast and for whom ‘down the shore’ is a phrase promising the joys of summer, you can understand why my heart is with the more subtler, natural style that I hopefully have captured for our wedding.

It sounds beautiful….I wonder if there would be a way to incorporate old lobster traps and rope in to the decor? Without being cheesy of course….I think it could be nice…

I keep threatening to have lighthouse-shaped place cards with sand dollars tied to them with raffia. And in response, my friends threaten to wear lobster-shaped hats.

I get your vision. We’ve been to some lovely weddings on the Jersey Shore that sort of had this feel (not quite as New England, tho). It was a pleasure attending a wedding that was understated in the decorations. The coastal environment (architecture, weather, landscape, sea, scented air) speak for themselves. I imagine extra adornments are unnecessary and not in keeping with the New Englander character. I get that feeling looking at a vintage metal beach pail with a hint of rust and some of the paint scruffed off from use many summers.

I definitely think of “down the shore” as a New Jersey term, not a new England term, but I am originally from the CT coast or sometimes called the shoreline.

have you tried some of the knot bios? there are a few “best bios” that come to mind.

Miss Corn: I really like the cashmere sweaters– sounds perfect for your event.

Sarah: If lobster hats are being worn anywhere at anytime within reach of a camera, I expect documentation.

One of the Most Likely To Wear a Lobster Hat finalists recently sent a link to a novelty hat website with the note “penguin or sombrero…penguin or sombrero…Hey! Why not both?” So, yeah, documentation will occur.

Love the stuff for your wedding so far.

I saw this dress and thought of you ;) Not sure when you’d wear it (shower? rehearsal dinner?) but I thought it was cute.

Christina!! That is so cute!! I, unfortunately, don’t fit into J Crew’s clothing. Actually, I fit in just fine, it is the ‘girls’ that don’t want to squeeze in.

However, I am on a major fitness kick, so maybe it will fit by the time my rehearsal dinner rolls aroud!!

Thanks for sending the link!

I’m doing something very similar. Everyone says “Oooh, shells and sand” and I’m like, ugh, no, a little anchor, some white line, and navy and kelly green. I’m in Rhode Island, not the Keys, people. I completely comiserate.

Looking Back, Continued… » Weddingbee » The Wedding Blog

[...] As many of you know, Mr Corn and I were married at Fort Adams State Park in Newport, RI. After the ceremony, we hosted an authentic New England clam bake. Considering how close we were to the water, and the food we were serving, it only made sense that every detail at our wedding was based on our New England Coastal theme. [...]
