Cold Feet Insurance

Wedding insurance has long been an option for couples to protect against the unforeseen: weather disasters, sickness and injury, vendor no-shows–even unexpected military deployment. What it does not cover, however, is cancellation due to a change of heart. Until now.

Fireman’s Fund has just introduced “innocent party” wedding insurance. For as little as $95, the financier(s) of the event can purchase coverage against wedding nightmare scenario #1: the bride or groom getting cold feet. The rider cannot be purchased by the bride or groom; only whoever pays for the wedding can get it. And of course, they can’t do so if they think the wedding will be cancelled.

Apparently, it was runaway bride Jennifer Wilbanks who started the whole thing. After she skipped town and faked her own kidnapping, concerned parents of engaged couples started calling insurance companies and asking whether they could protect against something like this.

What do you think–will it be popular? How would you feel if you found out your parents (or your fiance’s parents) had invested in cold feet insurance?

hmmm… good idea, maybe? Would I do it, NO! But we are also not doing a prenup. If I found out my parents took out a policy without talking to me I would be offended but they are paying for the wedding so if that would help them sleep at night then I would understand it from their point of view.

My FILs did exactly the opposite: they added me to their wills about three months before the engagement. Creepy!

I’d be interested to read the fine print on this clause! Seems like a catch-22 that “they can’t do so if they think the wedding will be cancelled”… but someone must have enough of an inkling/doubt to purchase this coverage.

Sarah: You mention an important point. Wills should be on the “to-do list”! I suppose, for most it should happen promptly post-wedding, right up there with assembling the wedding photo album.

I would be deeply, deeply offended if anyone in my life purchased anything implying that I might not get married. Frankly, if they think my wedding won’t happen, they shouldn’t be funding any part of it. In fact, they shouldn’t even attend. That’s a kind of negativity that no newlyweds need in their lives.

I agree with Allison! I would be terribly upset if someone in my life purchased this insurance. On the other hand, I have no problem with prenups whatsoever (not that we’re having one–we don’t really have enough assets yet to make it worthwhile!). To me, a prenup is much different because that is something the bride and groom make a decision to enter themselves. This insurance is purchased by a third party and seems very contrary to the couple’s interests. That said, if I were a parent funding a very expensive wedding and I really didn’t like my child’s FI, I might consider it!

I, too, would be offended if my parents or someone else purchased such a policy. BUT — I hear too many brides say they wish they could have backed out moments before walking down the aisle, or even during planning. I think this would take the pressure off and hopefully spare some couples from bad marriages and divorces.

I agree w/ Kat. The wrong reason to go through with a wedding is that it’s already paid for. For those brides/grooms who have their doubts but might misguidedly go through with the wedding anyway because of guilt/pressure about wasting the money spent this policy makes it easier to be honest and say “I changed my mind.” Insurance is always something you buy because you hope you won’t need it. But I bet there is a lot of fine print on this policy.

It’s weird to me that the bride/groom can’t purchase this policy and that only the people paying for the wedding can. What: all couples’ parents pay? So many people pay for their own weddings these days that this stipulation seems really strange to me.

Also, my only reaction (so far) to the fact that such a policy exists is “eeeewwwwww.”
