Dress Swatches!

June 4th, 2007 @ 12:34 pm by Mrs. Eggplant

My dress swatches finally came in!

Dress Swatches! : wedding cultural san francisco Z913254 z913254

The white postcard is a swatch sent to me by Alexandra Bridal Salon in San Francisco where I purchased my gown (I’ll share more about my dress shopping experience in a later post). Although the lighting is awful and you can’t tell in the picture, the satin fabric is off-white in color with a sheen that’s almost metallic.

Attached to the yellow paper are two swatches from my cheongsam purchased at Dragon Seed Bridal in Chinatown, SF. This small and busy shop designs Chinese-style dresses for many of the ladies who participate in Miss Chinatown pageants in northern California. I ordered my dress to resemble the cheongsam that my mom wore at her wedding:

I tried to stuff myself into her dress, but unfortunately it was a bit too small. Mama Eggplant weighed 100 lbs when she got married! Dress Swatches! : wedding cultural san francisco Shocked shocked The dress buttoned all the way up, but one slight move and I would’ve blinded someone with a spray of exploding sequins. Nope, not gonna work. So I ordered my own cheongsam and it looks almost exactly like my mother’s in the picture above. My dress will be white satin like my mom’s with added pink piping along the edges. It’ll be decorated with a design of pink peonies rather than the phoenix on my mom’s dress.

I haven’t known many brides that were able to walk down the aisle in their mother’s (or other family member’s) wedding attire, perhaps because of style changes, fabric deterioration, or size differences. My friend that married recently wore her sister’s wedding dress, which I thought was both meaningful and thrifty. I’ve always wanted to incorporate my parents’ wedding into my own, but wearing Mama Eggplant’s wedding dress wasn’t an option because she gave it away. Her cheongsam didn’t quite fit me, so I did the next best thing and had one made that will look just like hers. :)

I would also have loved to wear my Mom’s wedding dress, hers was a very classic, timeless design in the early 60’s, but she made it into a halloween costume and then gave it away! :( I mean who does that?!? A Halloween costume?!? Seriously!?!

Lovely! Vintage fabrics can also be delicate. (Or in the case of 1970s polyester, not delicate enough, which is why wearing my mom’s dress was out.) One grandmother had borrowed a dress so no luck with hers. My other grandmother was a WWII bride who married in a high-quality classic style knee-length dress in a bold color. It looks like something a 1940s Grace Kelly type would have worn for an international travel photo op. Guess good quality and timeless style matter, because we still have her dress and matching accessories and I’m the only one who fits it (yea!) so I wore it (sans hat) for engagement photos. Grandma got a huge kick out of that.

i think that’s such a great idea - having your cheongsam made to resemble your mom’s. my mom’s looks similar to your mom’s, but it was pink and had a darker pink velvety/silvery dragon running down the middle. i really want to wear hers but i couldn’t even get the dress up past my waist!!! we’re going to chinatown ny this weekend, hopefully we’ll stumble on something similar!

Beautiful!! Wearing my mom’s dress was out too, so I am wearing her original engagement ring and wedding band on my right hand. Her engagement ring was a star sapphire, so it also doubles as my something blue!! (She finally got her diamond about 20 years ago!)

I almost wore mom-in laws dress but it was stained, and we didn’t think the stains would come out. She decided to give me her veil to wear. It’s absolutely gorgeous. It’s chapel length, ivory, with handmade lace edging :)
